Free Picks: Service Plays for Saturday, July 5

Top Shelf Picks

Cincinnati / Milwaukee Over 8

With this pitching match-up, I am looking for a high scoring game today. Milwaukee sends Matt Garza (5-5, 4.10 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, .252 BAA) to the hill today, while Cincinnati sends Homer Bailey (8-4, 4.39 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, .269 BAA). Milwaukee's offense is struggling, having scored just 18 runs in their last 5 games. However, for the season they are 5th in the majors in runs scored, so we know their offense can explode. Today, the Brewers face a very hittable pitcher, and one they've hit in the past. Their roster has a collective .302 lifetime batting average against Bailey. Since 2011, the Brewers have scored 40 ER in 69.2 innings against Bailey for a 5.17 ERA. Of course, as well as Milwaukee has hit Bailey, the Reds have had similar success against Matt Garza. The Reds roster has hit a collective .284 against Garza. Since 2011, he has been tagged by the Reds for a 5.45 ERA himself. The Reds have tagged him for 6 home runs in that time; only Houston has hit more off him. The Reds offense has cooled off, scoring only 10 runs in their last 5 games and being shut out twice. In their 11 games prior to that they had scored 67 runs, so this offense has shown itself capable. This looks like a perfect set up for the Reds to break out of their slump. Look for a rather high scoring game in Cincinnati today.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Atlanta Braves
Play: Atlanta Braves -143

Bolsinger makes his fourth start since being recalled from Triple-A Reno to take the injured Bronson Arroyo’s spot in the rotation, and seeks his first win in that stretch despite allowing six earned runs with 16 strikeouts in 20 innings. He is 0-2 in his past two outings, but gave up one run on five hits in 7 2/3 innings on June 22 against the Giants before surrendering two runs on three hits in six innings Sunday at San Diego. Bolsinger went 1-2 with a 6.08 ERA before being sent to the minors in early May.

Saturday's comp play goes out on the Reds to trim another game off of the Brewers lead in the N.L. Central Division.

Milwaukee has now dropped 4 in a row, and worse still is the fact Cincinnati has now won 6 of the 8 season series meetings against them.

Matt Garza works against Homer Bailey, and Bailey is in that zone right now, carrying a no-hitter into the 7th inning in his last start, and winning each of his last 5 starts at home!

Bailey's run of home wins began back in May with a win over the same Milwaukee team he faces today.

Matt Garza will take the ball for the backsliding Brewers, and he is 0-1 in his 3 career starts against Cincy, sporting a 5.14 ERA in those efforts.

More ground will be gained by the Reds when this one is in the books, take Cincinnati.

My free play for today is going to be the Cincinnati Reds over the Milwaukee Brewers, as I look to improve upon my 28-17 free-pick run. And in this game I do not want you listing pitchers.

The SMART INTANGIBLE working with the Reds - It's Homer Bailey, who is in after flirting with yet another no-hitter, in his last time out, against then-N.L. West leader San Francisco. The Giants are now in second place, and have proven to be a huge disappointment right now. But that doesn't take away from how well Bailey has performed.

The SMART INTANGIBLE working against the Brewers - As I told you yesterday in that I didn't like going against Kyle Lohse, it's no better today in having to go against Matt Garza, easily one of my favorite pitchers to watch the past 7 or 8 years. He will be working on extra days rest, and I'm not sure if that's good or bad, as the right-hander has always been adamant about five-day turnarounds.

In conclusion, why Cincinnati is my SMART PLAY in this game - Yes, the Brewers are still atop the N.L. Central, leading the Cardinals by 4, Pirates by 5.5 and these Reds by 6. But Cincinnati also came in to this series on a three-game losing streak, and proved there is just as much hunger to win in this series, as there is out of the Milwaukee dugout. And the Reds are at home, where they're going to want to keep the momentum alive.

Milwaukee, meanwhile, has been on the road and still is, after opening the week in Toronto. It was only two games, but the Jays lent to the pain of Milwaukee's homestand-finale loss to Colorado on Sunday, a 10-4 ripper. The Brewers' four-game slide has come at a collective disadvantage of 25-11. That's more like a football score, and that's just not good. I like the Reds.

Your Saturday freebie is the Braves on the Run Line over the Diamondbacks.

The latest Atlanta winning streak is at 8 games, and 6 of those 8 wins have come by 2 runs or better. That includes last night's series opener, 5-2 over Arizona.

More of the same today, as the Bravos have won 4 in a row, and 10 of their last 11 at home against the D-Backs, who are averaging under 2 runs per game in Hot-lanta in that span.

Aaron Harang has been getting hit, but right now his teammates have been hitting the ball consistently enough for me to back the Braves on the Run Line, especially against rookie Michael Bolsinger who has won just once in his 7 starts this season, with the Diamondbacks going 1-6 this year when he is on the mound.

Atlanta rolls to another 2 runs or better win this Saturday afternoon.

Your free play of the day is the Marlins and Cardinals to go over the posted total.

Both of these teams are more than capable of scoring runs, especially after the 3-2 Cardinals win last night. Miami pounded out 11 hits but didn't score their first runs of the game until the top of the 9th inning... and that simply won't happen again tonight.

Both pitchers are struggling while both offenses are capable of putting up multiple runs in one inning.

LHP Andrew Heaney is 0-3 with a 5.29 ERA on the season in the rotation and suffered his third straight loss in as many starts after allowing four runs on eight hits over six innings in a 5-3 loss to the A's. Heaney is still looking for his first MLB win, and while he might get it today, it won't come easy as I expect a lot of runs for both teams.

St. Louis counters with struggling Shelby Miller (7-7, 4.10 ERA) who is 0-2 in his last four starts including his last pathetic showing in which he surrendered six runs over five innings in a 6-0 loss to the Dodgers. He's also having trouble with control, walking 15 batters in his last 21 innings of work... pathetic.

Take the OVER as your free play of the day.

My free play for tonight is on the San Diego Padres, against the San Francisco Giants, as I'm taking one of the league's worst offensive teams against the slowly declining National League West power that has dropped into second place.

The Giants - who once held the largest division lead in the majors - arrived in San Diego after losing two straight, including Thursday night's 7-2 shellacking in St. Louis, while they've lost nine of their last 11. The Los Angeles Dodgers have methodically been doing their thing, and have ridden an 8-3 win streak into first place thanks to stellar play on the road.

The Padres, meanwhile, have won five in a row and are suddenly on the rise in the West. They don't stand a chance in catching the Giants anytime soon, but they're playing better and have risen from last place into third place in the division.

I don't care about who is pitching for either team, as this one is about the action and momentum, not to mention a rivalry from the Golden State. Take the Friars here, as they're worth the slim dog price.

My free play for Independence Day is on the Atlanta Braves against the Arizona Diamondbacks, as I'll ride this win streak with the N.L. East leaders, who are sitting a game and a half game ahead of the Washington Nationals in the division. And even though the Nats lost yesterday, they've caught fire, and won five of six and nine of 13 since June 21, Atlanta can't afford any sort of letdown.

The Braves hand the ball to veteran junkballer Aaron Harang, who showed his maturity in his last time out, working out of several jams against the Philadelphia Phillies, firing seven frames of two-run ball to earn the victory. He's allowed just two earned runs or less in 13 of his 17 starts for the Braves.

Arizona arrived in Atlanta after dismantling Pittsburgh in the team's series-finale, but that was after the Pirates rolled through the first two games. The Snakes went back to their losing ways last night and will be playing their eighth straight road game in nine days after visiting San Diego before their series in Pittsburgh.

A bit pricey, yes, but the Braves are playing well enough to feel confident in playing this game straight.

Cincinnati -130

Today's hidden gem is between the 51-36 Brewers and the 44-41 Reds. Matt Garza and Homer Baily have both been subpar but Homer has pitched well lately. He's coming off a 9 inning shutout of the Giants. Reds have won 6 straight against the Brewers and know they are the team to beat to win the Central. Big value here in a Reds play even with the public on the Reds at a 57% clip.
