Free Picks: Service Plays for Saturday, April 26

My free play for today is going to be in the MLB ranks, as I like the New York Mets to get things done against the Miami Marlins, in an N.L. East battle in Queens. I don't want you listing pitchers in this one, as it'll be straight action.

Why the Mets are motivated here - They've won three straight games and are nipping at the heels of first-place Atlanta in the division. New York is just 2.5 games back of the Braves, who are entertaining the Cincinnati Reds over the weekend. Atlanta could sweep that series, so to keep pace, the Mets need to do the same against the last-place Fish.

Why the Marlins will struggle tonight - Miami, which is 10-13 on the year, has lost two in a row after last night's 4-3 setback. The Marlins have been great when hosting teams, and horrendous on the road thus far. To be exact, the Marlins are 1-9 when ordering room service. Until this team figures out how to win on the road, I'll be looking for value prices against it.

In conclusion, why NEW YORK is my SMART PLAY in this game - Though I state not to list pitchers, make note that Miami is handing the ball to Kevin Slowey, who is making his second start in place of Jacob Turner, and I'm not so sure about his durability for this one tonight, against the streaking Mets. If New York jumps on the right-hander early and often, he could be in the showers earlier than expected.

Things are just swinging in New York's favor right now, as it took last night's series opener in walk-off fashion. That's hard to recover from, when you've lost nine of 10 on the road, and easy to come back from, when you're riding a three-game win streak. Take the Mets.

1* N.Y. METS

My free play for Saturday is on the Arizona Diamondbacks, over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies.

An interesting pitching matchup is scheduled for this one, as the Snakes hand the ball to Bronson Arroyo, while Cliff Lee toes the slab for the Phils. I'm not going to list either pitcher, though, as I like Arizona to get this one done on pure momentum.

The D-Backs have won three in a row, and while I realize Lee is 4-1 vs. Arizona is his career, but adding to their momentum is the fact that last night's series-opening win snapped an eight-game home slide.

Since scoring five runs in the ninth inning to spoil the Cubs' Wrigley Field 100-year celebration, Arizona hasn't slowed down one bit.

So even though the Snakes are just 2-11 at home, my money is on them keeping this run alive.

4* ARIZONA

Joe Williams

Heat at Bobcats
Play: Heat -5

The Heat have covered each of their past four trips to Charlotte, and Game 3 will not be any different. Miami has been rather lackluster through the first two games, doing just enough to win. Expect them to step on the gas pedal and really push Charlotte to the brink with a big win.

Pacers / Hawks Over 187

The Pacers are really struggling in this series and today’s contest is clearly a “must win” game for them. Right now, it is more likely for the Pacers to beat the Hawks via their offense rather than their defense as absurd it might sound.

Roy Hibbert is lost on the court! The Hawks’ offense w/ their big men shooting the ball from the outside is taking advantage of Hibbert’s lack of mobility. IND’s coach Vogel has decided to change IND’s PNR coverage as he lost the confidence in his team… Obviously, the Pacers are not “prepared” to change their defensive system built in years in a few days, and suddenly, the best defensive team in the league simply doesn’t know what to do on the defensive end! In the last game, ATL generated plenty of good outside looks. For some reason, they couldn’t hit those shots @ first half by shooting just 2-16 3pts. However, once those shots started falling, the Hawks killed IND’s defense w/ 59 points in the second half!

On the other end… coach Vogel most likely will give more minutes to Luis Scola and C.J. Watson as both players have been quite decent on the offensive end = good sign for the OVER. I expect IND to be super aggressive by attacking the rim and get a decent number of FT’s vs. undersized ATL’s frontcourt! With Hibbert playing fewer minutes, the Pacers are playing a bit faster and so, my fair line for this is 190 points = proper edge for a play w/ OVER!

San Antonio Spurs -3.5

DAL’s head coach Rich Carlisle was fantastic in the first two games of the series, but especially in the last game, the Spurs really couldn’t play any worse.

First of all, we should understand that at the end of the third quarter, the Mavericks had scored 88 points while shooting 50.7% FG & 6-14 from 3pts (42.9% mark). However, the Spurs were even better offensively by shooting 56.5% FG & 8-14 from 3pts (57.1% mark), but still, they were trailing by 13 points!

Turnovers!!! SAS committed 21 TO’s in the first 3 quarters of the game and they were outrebounded as well – obviously, I have to give some props to DAL but really, the majority of those TO’s were the result of some incredible sloppy play from the Spurs! Turnovers & Rebounding is something really “easy” to fix, so I expect SAS to bounce back today in these two key areas.

In that game, everything went well for the Mavericks. They couldn’t miss mid range jumpers…Shawn Marion was hitting three pointers… B. Wright battled foul trouble, and so Carlisle was “forced” to play D. Blair and Blair was just tremendous w/ 3-6 FG for 8 points + 7 rebounds and 4 steals in just 14 minutes of action!

DAL played small ball and won the game… I expect SAS to be more “ready” for this contest while their biggest problem in G2 is pretty easy to fix and so, I’m taking the Spurs in here as my Single Dime Play!

Bryan Power

Texas vs. Seattle
Pick: Seattle

With Felix Hernandez pitching tonight, I like the Mariners chances of making it two in a row over the Rangers.  King Felix has not won in back to back starts, making him due for one here tonight at home.  The Rangers have been outscored by their opponents this season despite being five games over .500....

Hernandez has gotten little run support in the past when he's started against Texas.  This includes a game back on April 16th when he squared off against Yu Darvish and Seattle ended up losing 3-2.  However, King Felix did his job as he left w/ a 2-1 lead after seven innings, allowing just four hits while striking out nine.  Closer Fernando Rodney ended up blowing the game in the ninth.  Last time out for Hernandez was far more head-scratching. He lost as a $2.40 favorite to Houston thanks to four unearned runs.

It's been the Rangers' bullpen though that's been a bigger question mark this season, on the road particularly.  There they have a collective 5.96 ERA.  Last night saw Neal Cotts allow four runs in the home half of the eighth.  Starter Colby Lewis was knocked around in a previous outing this year vs. Seattle as well, giving up four runs in 5 1/3 innings of a 7-1 loss.

Sam Martin

Texas Rangers at Seattle Mariners
Prediction: Texas Rangers

Big return on the Rangers tonight going against Felix Hernandez and the Mariners, and we'll back Texas looking for a big payout. Hernandez is clearly on the best starting pitchers in all of baseball, but he's had his fair share of struggles against Texas with a losing 12-20 record and a 15-25 team start record.

We backed Yu Darvish and the Rangers in their 1-0 win a week and a half ago, and we think they can beat Hernandez again - this time with more offense. King Felix has given up 14 runs (13 earned) in his last two home starts against the Rangers and Seattle is a horrible offensive team hitting just .203 on the season.

Michael Alexander

Kansas City Royals vs. Baltimore Orioles
Play: Baltimore Orioles -128

Guthrie was 6-0 in his previous nine starts in April before yielding four runs and 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings of a 4-3 loss at Cleveland on Monday. The 35-year-old Roseburg, Ore., native is familiar pitching at Camden Yards (23-34, 4.21 ERA), with the bulk of the work coming from 2007-11 when he was 47-65 with the Orioles. In addition, Guthrie has lost 22 of the last 37 games when pitching on a Saturday and he has lost 55 of the last 92 road games when pitching as an underdog of +100 or higher

Andre Ramirez

Miami Heat vs. Charlotte Bobcats
Play: Charlotte Bobcats +5

Today we are laying the 5 points on the underdog at home. The NBA came under fire this week, when a whistle blower accused the NBA Officials of fixing the NBA Championship games. According to my sources, the NBA wants the HEAT and the Nets to be in the finals. With this information coming out, this game will be monitored by officials, and will be judged fairly. The Big Bettors are backing the Bobcats, and this game will come down to the wire. Don't be surprised if the Bobcats do pull the upset. The Bobcats are 10-3 ATS when playing with a 2 days rest, and 13-4 ATS after a division game.

Cajun Sports

Milwaukee Brewers -1.5 +140

The Brewers as a home favorite after a SU win in which they allowed six or fewer hits and their starter went more than five innings, walked fewer than five batters and it's not the first game of a series have posted a record of 49-10 SU for a profit of +3573 Units and win by an average of 2.37 runs per game.
