Free Picks: Service Plays for Tuesday, March 4

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Tuesday, March 4

Jeff Alexander

Baylor -3

Baylor is on the bubble. It currently appears to be on the right side of the bubble, but it is just 7-9 in conference play and would benefit greatly from getting to .500 in the conference. In case that's not enough motivation, the Bears can look to the whooping they received at Iowa State earlier in the season. Baylor is an impressive 70-56 ATS under coach Drew when out for revenge for a loss to a foe. The Cyclones are just 3-11 ATS in their last 14 games overall, 1-6 ATS in their last 7 road games and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games following a loss. The home team is 7-1 ATS in the last 8 meetings. Bet Baylor.

Miami vs. Clemson
Play: Miami +4

On Tuesday, Play On a March road teams like Miami-FL off an upset win by 15 points or more as a road underdog. Teams like the Hurricanes are able to build off the confidence of such a resounding victory and follow it up being 25-7 against the spread.

Sam Martin

Central Florida at Temple
Prediction: Temple

We are not so much playing "on" Temple as we are playing "against" Central Florida, as we feel home court advantage for an admittedly bad Temple team is more than enough to beat an equally bad Knights squad. Owls have at least been trying of late - beating SMU outright and covering the spread on the road against Memphis and Louisville (stayed within three points of the Tigers).

Can't say the same for Central Florida, who has dropped 12 of their last 14 games and with this being their final road game of the regular season we think they might be looking forward to going home and ending their season more than playing hard here. Not really much to play for tonight for the visitor while it's Senior Day at Temple, and fading a team that's just 3-12 ATS against conference foes at this price makes a ton of sense!

Jonathan Young

Youngstown St + 4

Tonight sees the Horizon League getting kicked off with a triple bill of opening round match ups. Youngstown State face off with Oakland in one of those games in what should be a perfect situation to bet on the Penguins of Youngstown St.

Youngstown St lost both regular season games to Oakland, this is a huge double revenge spot for this Penguin team which has played good basketball in stages throughout the season. Oakland has been one of the most inconsistent teams this year, playing very well one night to very ordinary the next.

Oakland has a tendency to struggle on the boards and their defense ranks 322 out of 351 Division 1 schools in the nation. In my view, the value in this game is on the underdog, Having beaten Youngstown St twice already this season, I doubt Oakland makes it a ‘hat trick’ vs Youngstown St.

Tony Finn

Western Michigan -9

The Broncos are efficient offensively with a deliberate scheme that averages just 51 shots per game shooting nearly 46 percent from the floor while making over 71 percent of their charity attempts.

The Huskies do their best to get high percentage shots with a walk it up offensive scheme but they are making a mere 38.5 percent of their shots from the floor on the season hitting only 28 percent from beyond the arc. They also shoot a soft 68 percent from the free throw line.

Western Michigan is 12-2 at home this season and while they take an average of only 51 field goal attempts per game they average 77 points per game at home this year while giving up only 68.   Northern Illinois Huskies has been anemic on the road this season averaging only 58 points per game while giving up almost 65 to their opponents.

Houston Rockets +1

The Rockets were able to rebound from a tough loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on the road with a 118-110 home win over the Detroit Pistons last time out. Houston is an impressive 11-2 over their last 13 games and enter riding a 5-game home winning streak. The last time the Rockets fell at home was 87-88 to the Memphis Grizzlies back on Jan. 24. Houston is also 17-3 overall and a perfect 12-0 at home vs the Eastern Conference this season.

The thing you have to take into consideration with the Rockets 7-game losing streak against Miami, is not one of those defeats came with Dwight Howard on the court. Howard is a difficult matchup for Miami, who have had their struggles against teams with dominant post players. Howard is listed as questionable with a sore back, but I fully expect the All-Star center to play tonight.

While it's pretty clear the Heat are playing with a sense of urgency right now, this game clearly means more to the Rockets. Houston is trying to prove that they are legit championship caliber team and the best way to do that is to beat the defending champs. You also have to take into consideration the difficult scheduling spot Miami is in. Not only do they figure to be tired, but they have a huge game on the road against the San Antonio Spurs on deck this Thursday. The Heat are just 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 games playing with no rest.

Peter Brown

Lakers -2

If there is one team in the NBA that the Lakers can beat its the New Orleans Pelicans. LA has defeated NO, 9 out of the last 10 times SU, going 5-5 against the number during that time. What makes this game such an easy victory for the Lakers is the Pelicans recent slide from grace. New Orleans is currently on an 0-5 streak both SU and ATS. All of those losses have come against the Western Conference. The Lakers meanwhile have started to play better basketball of late with wins over Sacremento and Portland. LA announced that G Steve Nash will miss the rest of the season so that isn't hanging over their heads anymore either. Add in New Orleans horrible road streak of 1-7-2 ATS in their last ten and this is a very winnable game for the Lakers.

OC Dooley

Illinois +2.5

One has to wonder why Michigan is not more of a favorite since they have a shot tonight at winning an outright regular season Big Ten title for the first time in TWENTY EIGHT long years.  In their latest triumph back on Saturday the Wolverines shot 50% from the field and lead the entire conference in three different offensive categories (field goal percentage, three-point shooting, free-throw percentage).  The reason for the tight line has to do with the sudden prosperity of Illinois who is on a 3-0 mini run which completely reversed an ugly 1-10 skid.  The big news is that Illinois’ defense has held for consecutive opponents to “50 or less” points which is the first time the school has pulled off that feat in more than SIXTY YEARS (1948 to be exact).  Illinois is coming off shocking outright upset at Michigan State during the weekend where they held the Spartans on their own floor to a season-low point total (46).  As mentioned at the top of this analysis one has to wonder why Michigan is not a heavier favorite since they have both won-and-covered 4 in a row in this series.  Here is a 73-PERCENT SYSTEM (43-16 since 1997) which plays AGAINST road teams like Michigan off a double-digit home win and facing an opponent that just pulled off an outright upset on the highway getting at least 12 points from the oddsmakers.  That system favors Illinois
