Brandon Shively

Miami vs. NC State
Play: Miami +5

This is a role-reversal game for NC State and I am more than happy to play against them today and take Miami Florida as a defensive dog in this game. NC State has been a good underdog play this year, but this afternoon they are in trouble as the linesmakers have this line inflated a couple extra points in my opinion as it should be a 'PK' in my opinion. This is a deflating game for NC State after blowing an 8 point lead at halftime, then losing at the buzzer in overtime to their in-state rival North Carolina.

Miami Florida is a defensive team that will play a slower paced game therefore making this point spread more valuable than in appears. The Hurricanes are holding ACC opponents to 59 ppg and 39% shooting from the floor. They have a shooting guard by the name of Rion Brown who is their team leader and he should carry the load against this sub-par NC State defense this afternoon.

NC State is one of the worst shooting teams in the ACC as they don't have any reliable shooters around the perimeter. (29% 3 PT in ACC play). I will factor this into my decision as well. In a game that should be played in the upper 50's or low 60's--the underdog is extremely valued and primed to cash us the ticket as the underdog in this series in 6-1-1 ATS the last 8 meetings.

Boston College vs. Wake Forest
Play: Wake Forest -2

The Demon Deacons were 0-7 until a home win against Clemson earlier in the week. The Tigers led 30-22 but Wake Forest had a nice comeback. The home team is under stress as coach Jeff Bdzelik and AD Ron Wellman have been under pressure to win. WF has decent players like Codi Miller-McIntyre, Travis McKie and Thomas. Coron Williams and Tyler Cavanaugh are decent as well.

Boston College won at Syracuse in overtime but has underachieved this year. They did get beat at Miami by over 20 points. They do have Olivier Hanlon at 18 ppg and Ryan Anderson, who can score as well but they don't play good defense.

All we need is for Wake Forest to win by at least 3 points to cover -2 and -2.5.

Jim Feist

Washington vs. Philadelphia
Play: Over 212

These are a pair of young teams that prefer scoring to play defense. Washington is 13-6 over the total on the road and 15-7 over in Wizards the last 22 games following a spread win. Washington is 20th in the NBA in field goal shooting defense, but the offense is clicking winning 5 in a row, including scoring 115 and 134 the last two games, the latter in triple OT (though it was 106-106 in regulation). They got the win over Toronto despite allowing 12-30 three points (40%). They will score plenty on a Philadelphia team that has given up on defense long ago, allowing 111 ppg and .467% shooting (second worst). Washington has a winning record because of this 5-game win streak and the over is 8-2 in the 76ers last 10 vs. a team with a winning record. In addition, the over is 45-21-1 in the 76ers last 67 games playing on 2 days rest. Don't look for any defense with all these young legs.

San Diego Se at Fresno St
Pick: Fresno St

We've been riding the Bulldogs ATM for weeks! FRES are 9-0 ATS in their last 9 games overall. SDSU is #13 in the country for good reason, stout defense. They rank #8 in adjusted defense on kempom.com. The Bulldogs have proven they can hang with the Aztecs, covering two of the last three including the last meeting on Jan. 15th(lost by 8 getting +14). SDSU is just 2-3 ATS their L5. Take the home dog .

David Glisan

UMass +2.5

If you're in Las Vegas you can find a +3 fairly easily at the time of this writing but most of the offshore stores and the books that Pregame uses for grading all have +2.5.  That should work as UMass just the better team.  Some consider Dayton a 'bubble team' but that's something of a stretch.  They had been playing well before getting eviscerated in their last game at St. Joseph's.  Handicapping theory 101 suggests that we want to look at a good team coming off a loss but I'm not sure that the previous loss might have been more of 'grim finality' for the Dayton at large prospects.  Even if they win out here and against St. Louis and Richmond they're a big longshot for a bid.  That suggests a team that may realize they'll have to put up a hell of an effort in the A10 tournament.  UMass is likely a sure thing for an at large bid now but a win here would likely seal the deal.  Minutemen travel well (6-3 SU/5-3-1 ATS road) and have some good perimeter shooters against a team that doesn't play great perimeter defense.  Might not be a situation like Creighton raining down a barrage of threes on Villanova but not a bad tactical advantage to have working in my favor.  Most importantly I think they're the better team getting points against an opponent that hasn't exactly come back strong off a loss in conference play (2-3 SU/ATS off a A10 loss YTD).  UMass wins outright and at this price that's all we need.

Missouri State vs. Wichita State
Play: Wichita State -17.5

Missouri State over the last several weeks have been playing badly, losing games at home vs Northern Iowa and then Illinois State, really were tough to swallow. Wichita State has been getting low end play from their frontcourt, where they should be getting a bit more from them, especailly from Darius Carter, who when playing, has been quite effective at times. Dorrian Williams really will have his work cut out for him trying to find Jarmar Gulley his place in the game. As long as Wichita State takes care of the ball, they will win by at least 25 points.

Houston vs. Temple
Play: Temple -3

The Houston Cougars are coming off a huge win over the Memphis Tigers on Thursday night. Houston is feeling pretty good about themselves coming into this one, but Houston has been abysmal on the road all year. This is a classic letdown spot coming off a big win. Temple will be looking for revenge since they lost the first meeting between these two teams this year. Houston has lost their last six road games. I like this spot for Temple. Take Temple.

Louisville vs. Memphis
Play: Louisville -4

Louisville is the between team but was stunned on their home floor earlier in the season by Memphis. Today they look to turn the tables and serve up home loss revenge. The Cardinals have covered 17 of the last 19 in Games played in March and 18 of the last 23 with 1 or less day of rest. They have the 7th ranked road defense in the country. In Contrast Memphis ranked 176 in home defense. Louisville won here by 9 points coming back from a 25 point first half deficit.. They have won 5 straight on the road and covered 3 of the last 4 here in Memphis. They also have a Big rebounding edge. Memphis does not play well vs most upper echelon teams as evidenced by their 3-6 record vs TOP 50 RPI scale ranked teams. The Tigers are also 0-5 straight up and 1-4 to the spread as a home dog from +3.5 to +6 and are off a tough loss in their last game. Look for Louisville to emerge with the win and cover.

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Saturday, March 1

Stephen Nover

SW Missouri +17.5

I'm not expecting Missouri State to be intimidated or awed by unbeaten Wichita State. The Bears know they can hang with the Shockers. They proved it in the first meeting on Jan. 11 building a 19-point lead with 11:48 left before losing in overtime, 72-69. The media is totally focusing on Wichita State in this nationally televised matchup since the Shockers became the first Division I team to reach 30-0 in the regular season. I don't think the Shockers are as good as their record and Missouri State is being undervalued. The Bears have won their last two games in impressive style, including defeating 21-8 Indiana State - the second-place team in the Missouri Valley Conference - 77-66 last Saturday. I realize the Shockers are going to want to show well on national TV, but Missouri State has plenty to play for, too, besides revenge. This is the highest-ranked opponent the Bears are playing since meeting Duke in the NCAA Tournament back in 1999. The Bears have a chance to finish third in the conference, or as low as sixth place. Wichita State already has won the Missouri Valley Conference title and top seed in the tournament. So while the Shockers have incentive to remain unbeaten this is not a kill spot. So the backdoor is open for the Bears, who rank third in the MVC in three-point shooting. Wichita State is 3-7-2 ATS the past 12 times when hosting a foe with a road winning percentage of less than .400. Cleanthony Early, the Shockers' leading scorer, hasn't shot well the past two games making 4-of-14 shots from the field during this span.

Ken Thomson

Indiana St. -2.5

Two Big time Seniors will play their last game in the Missouri Valley League today for Indiana State.  The Sycamores will probably be playing another home game or two in the NIT, CBI or CIT tournament unless they stun Wichita State in the MVC tourney.  Those two seniors are Jake Odum and Manny Arop the top two players for Larry Bird's Alma Mater.  Terra Haute should be jumping and I expect the Sycamores to pull away down the stretch to get the win and cover against Ben Jacobson's Northern Iowa Panthers.  I never go against UNI on their home court but I'll take a shot on the home town boys in Baby Blue!  ISU is ( 11-1 ) on their home court with their only loss coming inside the final minute to number one, Wichita State.  I expect a 5-9 point win by the Sycamores.....early start in this one on a Time Change....goes 1:00 PM EST...10:00 AM PST.

Belmont -8

I like this play a lot...but since I forgot to put it in my first CBB package, I'm throwing it out for Free.  I'll be surprised if Belmont doesn't roll by double digits over the Gamecocks who are one of the worst 3-point shooting teams in the country, percentage wise.  Belmont is on the other end of the spectrum in that category.  Rackley & Williams score in double digits for the Gamecocks but the rest of the team is dismal and even though those two lead the team in scoring they shoot 28% and 23% behind the Arc respectively.  Mann, Bradshaw, Chamberlain & Windler all score in double digits for Belmont and they average 40% behind the Arc between the four of them.  Unless these guys got hammered Friday Night, they ought to roll by 15 plus!!

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Saturday, March 1

Scott Spreitzer

Syracuse +4

Tony Bennett has been calling the right shots, but ACC-leading UVa is catching the Orange at the wrong time.  Syracuse has been taking a lot of heat for close calls, along with losses to BC and Duke over the past few weeks.  The Orange did bounce back against Maryland last time out and they're 7-1 SU on the road this season.  I don't want to take too much away from Virginia's 15-1 ACC record, but we need to note that the Cavaliers last 10 conference wins came against teams that are currently 52-100 SU in conference play, combined.  Just two of Virginia's last 10 ACC opponents currently own winning conference records (Pitt 9-6 & Clemson 8-7).  Virginia is not going to score a lot of points...that's not Tony Bennett's style and he has just two players averaging in double-figures in scoring.  There aren't a lot of 2-3 matchup zone busters on this team.  The Orange are one of the few teams that can match UVa's defensive intensity and like the Cavs, they don't normally score a lot of points.  But with recent "struggles," and with Jerami Grant dealing with a back injury (probable), I expect the Orange to be completely focused on the task at hand.  I believe Syracuse will pull the so called upset away from home and I'm recommending a play on the Orange, plus the points on Saturday.

Ryan M. Sports

Illinois at Michigan State
Pick: Michigan State

The 16-12 Illinois Fighting Illini head to East Lansing, MI to take on the 22-6 Michigan St. Spartans. The Spartans will finally have a fully healthy squad for the first time since December as they go for their 7th straight win at home. Branden Dawson will be returning after missing 9 games with a broken hand. Dawson is 2nd in the Big10 in rebounds (8.7) and will be a nice addition down low for the Spartans. Michigan St. is coming off a loss to Michigan last Sunday but are 5-0 this season after defeat. These 2 teams met in January in Illinois where the Spartans won 78-62 without Senior center Adreian Payne. Since Payne has returned from a right foot sprain he is averaging 17 points & 7.5 rebounds while shooting 53% from the field. The Illini are winners of 2 straight after defeating Nebraska at home 60-49 but are 1-7ATS this season after scoring 60 points or less. Over the last 3 years ATS the Illini are a pathetic 18-34 against conference opponents, 11-19 in road games, and 16-24 as an underdog.

Bruce Marshall

Utah State at San Jose State
Pick: Utah State

San Jose has put forth the occasional spirited effort. But without consistent scoring threats or serviceable depth, the Spartans' maiden voyage in the Mountain West has been a very bumpy one. SJSU's best chance is to usually catch a foe looking ahead. But doubt Stew Morrill's fellow WAC refugee Utags are going to pass up a chance to take out some frustrations after falling mostly short vs. the Mountain West's upper echelon this season. There are more scoring sources for Utah State, which shot 52% from the floor in an easy 19-point home win over the Spartans at Logan on Jan. 4 when Morrill hardly received any production from 6-10 C Jarred Shaw (14.3 ppg, but only 6 in that game, which was his first following three-week midseason suspension). Not much home edge these days for the Spartans, whose actual crowd counts are said to be numbering in the three digits these days at the Event Center.

Jimmy Boyd

Kansas Pk

The Kansas Jayhawks are the best team in the Big 12, and they are playing some great basketball coming into this matchup with Oklahoma State. Meanwhile, the Cowboys are trying to climb their way out of a slump having lost seven of their last nine games. Their only two wins during that stretch came against Texas Tech and TCU, two teams that rank second to last and last, respectively, in the Big 12 standings.

The No. 5 ranked Jayhawks should make easy work of the Cowboys today. The last time these teams met the Cowboys were the hot team, coming into the matchup as the ninth ranked team in the country. The Jayhawks still managed to pick up a two point win in that game. With their roles reversed, I think the Jayhawks are poised to widen their margin of victory in this second meeting of the season. The change in venue should not mean much since Oklahoma State has lost three of its last four games at home.

Oakland vs. Youngstown State
Play: Youngstown State -5

The Oakland Grizzlies are several notched down from some decent recent editions and have been a highly profitable fade the entire season. In fact, Oakland is just 9-18 ATS in their lined games, 6-12 as a dog, and 5-8 vs the points on the road. The Grizz travel to what figures to be a desperate and pissed off Youngstown squad. At 14-14, the Penguins are playing for some type of post-season play and still sore from an 86-85 jackfest loss on January 31st. The Pens are 11-3 straight up at home and 9-2 staright up when favored. The ATS techs are luke warm but giving up five here in this spot doesn't look to be a big deal.

Marc Lawrence

Iowa State at Kansas State
Prediction: Kansas State

The Cyclones have played well since an embarrassing 25-point loss to West Virginia on February 10th, winning three straight heading into their payback game with the Mountaineers on Wednesday night. Iowa State?s big three of DeAndre Kane, Melvin Ejim and Georges Niang have scored nearly 75% of the Cyclones? points in those three victories, and will also be playing into revenge in this one after a 81-75 win in Ames over the Wildcats in late-January. That Cyclones win came after Iowa State had an entire week off, and when it happened again to the Wildcats against Oklahoma on Saturday night, KSU coach Bruce Weber complained vociferously to the Big 12. In our opinion, the blame shouldn?t go to the schedule-maker, but to the HC for his team?s anemic play away from Bramlage Coliseum (Wildcats have now lost six straight games on the road). Fortunately, there?s no place like home as the Cats are 16-1 SU this season in Manhattan. Thus, we?ll ride that trend into the sunset ? especially since Weber is also 35-6 SU and 28-10 ATS at home with revenge if his team?s win percentage is .650 or greater. K-State has also owned this series, winning 10 of the last 12 meetings and going 8-3-1 ATS. We recommend a 1-unit play on Kansas State.

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Saturday, March 1

Indian Cowboy

Virginia -3.5 over Syracuse

Virginia won 23 games last year and was a Top 40 team who went 11-7 in conference play. Prior to that, they were a top 35 team and had won 23 games prior to running into Florida in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. When Coach Bennett took over this team in 2010, this team was coming off 10 wins that season and he improved them to 15 wins in his first season. Then, 16 in 2011, then 22 in 2012 and 23 wins in 2013 as mentioned. Now, this team sits at 23 wins with still 3 regular season games to play on the docket and they are no longer a top 40 team but rather a top 5 power ranking team. Their ranking might be 11th in the country in the polls, but this team is frankly good enough to be a top 5 power ranking team. They are ranked higher than Syracuse in most power rankings regardless of overall ranking by the polls as Virginia is a top 5 defensive team and a top 40 offensive team. Syracuse is a dynamic team, but with Virginia being 14-1 in conference play, with their sole loss to Duke on the road by just 4 points, a team that has steadily gotten better with a coach who is as humble and steady as it comes who has built this program from the ground up, look for Virginia to be more than ready for this contest. Virginia is the better team here and if Syracuse found the contests at Maryland, Pittsburgh and Duke tough, Virginia might be the toughest test of them all on the road. Let's roll with the better team at home on Saturday afternoon.

Strike Point Sports

San Diego State -4 over Fresno State

The Aztecs were pretty inept last weekend being upset and completely handled by New Mexico. I expect San Diego State to have a much better effort in this road game. Fresno State has been pretty much all over the map this season, and I think the road favorite has some atoning to do right before the conference tournament gets going in early March. Every league game counts the rest of the way now that the top of the Mountain West is up for grabs. They’ll wand to step up and come through before a couple of important games to finish the regular season. San Diego State bounces back here and cashes against the Bulldogs and I plan on cashing in again this weekend.
