The Badgers went from being perfect and ranked inside the Top 5 to having to accept back-to-back losses in the Big Ten. Now they get a road date with a middle-of-the-road Boilermakers team, and it will be interesting to see how Bo Ryan’s team responds. I think Wisky plays well and shows a good effort here in West Lafayette. Purdue is certainly capable of pushing the Badgers here, but I think after a couple of losses this Wisconsin team turns in a really good game and nets a win and cover on the road. Lay the points with the road squad in this Big Ten clash.

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Saturday, January 25

Jim Feist

Washington Wizards at Utah Jazz
Pick: Washington Wizards

Washington is a young team that has crept up to the No. 5 seed in the West. Guard John Wall (20 ppg) and Bradley Beal (17 ppg) are fine offensive players. Those two are 23 and 20 years old, good building blocks. The defense needs some work but is very good at forcing turnovers with their quickness, 6th in the NBA in turnovers. They just won 3 in a row winning twice as a dog against the Bulls and Miami Heat. The young Wizards are 22-10 ATS in their last 32 games playing on no days rest and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 road games. Utah has all kinds of problems, 27th in the NBA in points scored, 16th in points allowed. The Jazz are 7-15 ATS in their last 22 games playing on 3 or more days rest as well as 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 home games. And when these teams meet the road team is 12-5-1 ATS in the last 18 meetings, plus the Wizards are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings in Utah.

Tony Karpinski

Indiana vs. Denver
Play: Under 201½

The Pacers have been nothing but fantastic this season, including on the road. Their defense never thwarts, but their offense sometimes can struggle, in particular on the road, where they have failed to hit triple digits most of their away games. The Nuggets can hit the offensive glass well enough to keep Indiana honest. Behind their "Manimal" Kenneth Faried he will be a concern, to contain off the boards. On the break, they need to stop and make the pass, moving the ball on the break is necessary for victory, to open it up vs this stingy D. Ty Lawson is excellent finding his players in stride, and makes the game change completely. Hibbert has to make sure that Kenneth Faried doesn’t get 2nd opportunities off the offensive glass, but the athletic Faried is going to up for the challenge. The Pacers defense is tough and I see both teams scoring in the mid- 90's here on Saturday night.

Eastern Kentucky vs. Belmont
Play: Belmont -5½

No matter what league they are in the Bruins don't like losing so they will be extra revved up to take on Eastern Kentucky on their own homecourt. I am not deterred by the fact that they have covered just once at home this season as their new league is tougher and the oddsmakers are going to need some time to adjust. This is a super efficient team with only one home loss...to VCU, and you know I like those guys. Take the Bruins to exact their revenge.

Clippers vs. Raptors
Play: Under 199½

This is the Clippers 6th road game now out East and their 3rd road game in 4 days. It is always hard to travel to Toronto on back-to-backs also. Without Chris Paul in the lineup, I look for a slower paced game for the Clippers. The UNDER is 4-1 the last 5 matchups between these two teams. The one game that went OVER was when the total was 183.5 and the final points scored were 194. Looking deeper, out of the last 10 matchups, only 2 games have went over 200 total points. Toronto is only averaging 94 ppg their last 5 games, shooting 43% from the floor and this is also their 3rd game in 4 nights. I do not expect either team to be in a hurry to push the pace and we should see some tired legs as well by the time the 4th quarter comes along. I see this game finishing with a final score in the 94-92 range for a total in the 186-188 point range. Play this game UNDER as both teams will feel the effects of playing their 3rd game in 4 nights.

Joe Gavazzi

Michigan State -5

This rivalry battle is for 1st place in the Big 10 as each enters undefeated in the league. 7th year Michigan HC Belein has made remarkable adjustments for not only the loss of his starting backcourt from last year's Final Four team, but also for the loss of big man McGary (out with back surgery). But, don't tell Spartan HC Izzo about injury problems. Out for tonight's' game is interior force Dawson and it is not likely that big man Payne will return from his foot injury. But what the Spartans do have is the coaching of Izzo and 4 days to prepare, which has resulted in a record at home of 45-6 ATS if the Spartans are favored by 5 to 11 points and have 4 or more days rest.

Marc Lawrence

Iowa vs. Northwestern
Pick: Northwestern

The Hawkeyes have been solid this season, with a 4-1 mark in the tough Big Ten and a 15-3 record overall at press time. Following a huge win over Ohio State, Iowa had a week off before pummeling Minnesota with a big second half last Sunday as Fran McCaffery got 43 points from his bench in the win over the Gophers. An important matchup with Michigan presents itself on Wednesday, and with a monster showdown versus conference-leading Michigan State looming, it will be difficult for the Hawkeyes to focus against the 9-10 Wildcats here – especially since Iowa is 3-7 ATS after the Wolverines and 0-4 SUATS on the road before meeting the Spartans. But taking Northwestern lightly would be a big mistake, even though the Hawkeyes drilled Northwestern 93-67 earlier this season in Iowa City. The Wildcats have popped up with a couple of big defensive efforts lately, including last Saturday’s 54-47 road upset of the Hoosiers at Assembly Hall, as they held Indiana to just 25% shooting. Senior Drew Crawford leads the way for the Wildcats, averaging 15.1 PPG and 7.2 RPG. In this series, Northwestern is 3-0-1 ATS against Iowa when the Hawkeyes own a .750 or better win percentage, and after unexpected wins in January over Illinois and Indiana, Chris Collins will try to complete the “I” trifecta with an upset at Welsh-Ryan Arena in this late-morning meeting.  We recommend a 1-unit play on Northwestern.

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Saturday, January 25

Jack Jones

Iowa State -8.5

Off three straight losses, I look for No. 16 Iowa State (14-3) to come out fired up and ready to go at Hilton Coliseum Saturday. This is one of the toughest places in the country to play, and I look for the home crowd to give the Cyclones the added push they need to bounce back with a double-digit blowout.

Iowa State has been superb at home this season, going 8-1 while outscoring opponents by an average of 22.8 points per game. It has home wins over the likes of Iowa and Michigan, with its only loss coming at the hands of Kansas, which is playing as well as anyone in the country.

That's the same Kansas team that topped Kansas State 86-60 in Lawrence on January 11. Kansas State is just 1-2 in true road games this season with its only win coming against Big 12 bottom feeder, TCU. The Wildcats will not be ready for the atmosphere they're about to face in Ames.

The Cyclones are a perfect 6-0 ATS in Saturday home games over the last two seasons, winning by 18.2 points per game. Iowa State is 21-8 ATS in its last 29 home games overall. The Cyclones are 22-8 ATS in their last 30 Saturday games. Iowa State is 7-1-1 ATS in its last nine meetings with Kansas State, including 5-0-1 ATS in its last six home meetings. Bet the Cyclones Saturday.

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Saturday, January 25

Rob Vinciletti

Auburn vs. Arkansas
Play: Arkansas -11½

Arkansas is hosting Auburn here tonight. The Tigers have been dismal on the road and below we see that they are 0-9 and 1-8 ats on the road when playing off a loss. They have lost 9 of the last 10 here and take on an Arkansas team that has won 24 of the last 25 here and is ranked 14th in the nation in home scoring Offesne. That spells trouble for an Auburn team that ranks among the worst in the nation in road defense at 315. Arkansas is a solid 15-4 to the spread at home off a road dog loss and they should rebound nicely off a pair of road losses. The Razorbacks won their prior home game against Kentucky and played Florida to the end here this season. The Winner is 14-1 to the spread in lined games involving Arkansas this year. This is much easier task. Look for Arkansas to coast to a win and cover.

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Saturday, January 25

Bryan Power

Tennessee vs. Florida
Pick: Tennessee

Tennessee was a winner for me last Saturday, but barely.  They covered by a half point at Kentucky, but really the game was a lot closer than that as the underdog Vols led outright for much of the first half.  Poor shooting, 41% overall including 2 of 13 from three-point range eventually doomed UT as did the free-throw line where they were 16 of 23 compared to 23 of 24 for Kentucky.

The Vols bounced back this week w/ a hard-fought 7-point win over Arkansas. That was on Tuesday.  Florida played Arkansas two days later and won too, covering by just one point as I had the Hogs at home.  The Gators did not shoot particularly well (just 38% overall), but did make 10 three-pointers and dominated the boards against the SEC's worst rebounding team.

Tennessee leads the conference in rebounding margin and all of its six losses this year have come by single digits.  As I discussed Thursday, Florida has won a number of close games this year w/ three of their last four coming by seven points or less.  They are 8-2 in games decided by single digits this year, a far cry from their 0-6 SU record in such games last year.   Tennessee has beaten Florida each of the last three times they have met.

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Saturday, January 25

Jesse Schule

Buffalo vs. Columbus
Pick: Columbus

The Blue Jackets have been unstoppable over the past two weeks, winning eight in a row. They will host the NHL's worst team tonight, as the Buffalo Sabres are in town.

Buffalo has lost five straight, and the Sabres have only won four games on the road the entire season. They have also lost all three meetings with Columbus since 2011.

The Sabres are ranked last in the NHL in scoring, averaging just 1.8 goals per game. Goals might be hard to come by tonight, as last year's Vezina winner hasn't lost since he returned to the lineup for Columbus in early January.

Sergei Bobrovsky is now 10-5 with a 2.18 GAA at home this season, and that comes after a slow start. He's 5-0 with a 1.60 GAA in his last five starts on home ice.

Neither one of these teams is particularly good with the man-advantage, but Buffalo is ranked 29th in the league, clicking at just 14% this season.

I don't expect the Sabres to bring enough intensity to compete in Columbus tonight, and the home team should grind out it's ninth straight win in a low scoring affair.

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Saturday, January 25

Brad Wilton

Willing to lay a few points with the Cyclones on their home floor in Ames as they take on the visiting Wildcats of Kansas State.

K-State did everything but win their game on Tuesday night in Austin, as the Wildcats were edged by 3 points in the closing minute of play against the Texas Longhorns in a game they did indeed cover as the underdog.

I expect Kansas State to be just a little flat as they head to Hilton Coliseum to take on a desperate - but rested - Iowa State team that has not played since their loss last Saturday at Texas. Fred Hoiberg's team has now lost 3 in a row straight up and against the spread, but do sport an 8-1 straight up mark on their home floor, and a 5-2 against the spread mark at home as well.

These conference-rivals have split their last 6 series meetings straight up, but a closer look shows Iowa State with wins in 3 of the last 4 meetings, and the home team enjoying a 9-3-1 spread advantage the last 13 times the schools have clashed.

Look for Iowa State to end their skid at 3 with the win and cover at home today.

2* IOWA STATE

Villanova suffered its second loss of the season when its got absolutely hammered by Creighton, 96-68, in Philadelphia on Monday. The visiting Blue Jays canned a Big East-record 21 three-pointers in the game.

Pretty safe to say host Marquette, a team that's 14-for-56 shooting from downtown the past three games - and one that is averaging just 4.7 three-pointers a game, good for 305th in the nation - will not be repeating Creighton's sharp-shooting success

The Golden Eagles are coming off an 80-72 OT win at short-handed Georgetown after dropping a 12-point decision at Butler, a team that had lost its previous five games.

Villanova's loss on Monday was the worst ever during coach Jay Wright's tenure. But it was simply one of those games and today you take advantage of the reduced price on the Wildcats as they cash in Milwaukee against Marquette.

Jeff Benton

Your Saturday freebie is Florida at home over Tennessee.

Yes, Tennessee has the talent, and yes they also have some favorable matchups along the front line to stay with Florida, but Cuonzo Martin's Volunteers have been a big disappointment away from Knoxville this season, going just 1-3 straight up on the highway this season.

Florida has circled this game in red - three times! - as the Gators have lost each of the last three series meetings both straight up and against the spread.

The Gators have not lost this year in front of the Rowdy Reptiles, going 11-0 straight up at the O'Connell Center this season. True, their 4-3-1 home spread mark is not nearly as daunting as their straight up ledger, but the Gators have been on a solid 3-1 pointspread run their last 4 times on the floor, and the line is not crazy-high on the host in this spot.

Triple Revenge time for Florida, as Tennessee comes up short on the road once again.

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Saturday, January 25

Brad Wilton

Let's start with the series numbers between Atlanta and Milwaukee. This is the first meeting this year between the teams, and they do bring a pretty pronounced 7-1-1 Over mark the last 9 showdowns into the Bradley Center this Saturday night.

Both teams on the floor last night, with Atlanta making it 4 Overs in their last 5 games after seeing their 4 game Over streak snapped when they could only come up with 79 points last night at home against San Antonio.

As for Milwaukee, the going nowhere Bucks have split their last 6 Over/Under-wise, as they were held to just 78 points last night at Cleveland. One would think that after such low offensive outputs on Friday, the teams are due for some offense here on Saturday.

Some other numbers to be aware of; Milwaukee is 5-1 Over the total their last 6 Saturday games this season, and the Over is also on an overall 19-6-1 series run the past 26 times the Hawks have faced the Bucks.

Back-to-back games for both teams, and that means to me that the defenses could be a little lead-footed tonight making for easy transition baskets.

Going to play the Hawks and Bucks Over the total on Saturday night.

The Rebels woke up in Albuquerque with a road win at New Mexico two weeks ago!  They had pummeled Fresno State to open Mountain West play winning by 13 points.  In that the game the Rebs were ( 1 of 16 ) from behind the Arc.  They shot it well from the charity stripe ( 22 of 27 ).  They are playing solid team ball and if they are locked in like they were the other night against Utah State they could beat the Bulldogs by 20 and turn the tables on Fresno after getting swept last season!  Look for Khem Birch and Roscoe Smith to dominate the paint with Bryce Dejean-Jones knocking down his 16 footers and Deville Smith to continue maturing at the point guard position!!

Islanders’ games rarely go under this number, especially when a team that can score is the opponent. In fact, 12 of the Islanders last 17 games have gone over 5½ and in nine of those games the winning team scored five times or more. The Islanders have scored four goals or more in four straight and they have also allowed four or more in four straight. This is an Islanders team that is loaded with a bunch of hot snipers right now and it’s not like they’re facing strong goaltending. Fire away on Jaroslav Halak (today’s confirmed starter) and pucks will find the back of the net.
INSTEAD OF LEACHING OFF OTHERS WORK GO GET IT YOURSELF VIKESFAG
St. Louis has scored 173 goals, which ranks them third in the NHL behind Anaheim and Chicago. That bodes well here against an Islander team that has allowed more goals than any team in the league besides Edmonton. When the Blue Notes play teams that are not defense oriented, the games almost always go over this number. The Islanders defense is a mess, their goaltending has been erratic the entire year and even without Alex Steen, St. Louis, with its relentless forecheck, should have little difficulty padding their offensive numbers. The winning team in this series has scored five goals in three straight seasons and this year’s offense on both clubs are scoring in bunches.

Regulation only. On Thursday we discussed the Philadelphia Flyers grueling schedule and the negative impact of a postponed game against the Hurricanes that was made up the next day. In a difficult scheduling spot, the Flyers were soundly defeated by the Blue Jackets, 5-2.  We have a similar fade here against the Hurricanes. Carolina has played four games since last Saturday. Its game against Philadelphia, originally scheduled for Tuesday, was postponed due to weather and ended up being played on Wednesday. Tuesday was a difficult traveling day for the ‘Canes. They subsequently played Wednesday and they also played the very next night in Buffalo. Carolina was mentally prepared for a game and a day off but instead they had a postponement, followed by back-to-back games on Wednesday and Thursday. This game was originally scheduled for Friday but because teams do not play three games in three days it was moved to this afternoon. To make matters worse, this game starts at noon, making it five games that seem like six in seven days with a very early start to boot. Carolina, running strictly on fumes, does not figure to be sharp here.

Ottawa has played many afternoon games already this year and it’s something they are accustomed to. The Senators have dropped four of five but again, it’s because Coach Paul MacLean insists on using the inferior Craig Anderson instead of Robin Lehner but that is not the case here, as Lehner is the confirmed starter. The Senators own a better record on the road than they do at home and they come into this one in an extremely favorable scheduling spot. They are fresher and they should be much hungrier too. You see, this venue has been a house of horrors for the Sens, as they have lost 10 of the past 11 games here and they have to be sick of losing here already. This is the perfect opportunity for Ottawa to get this proverbial monkey off their backs. Anything less than a strong 60 minute effort against an exhausted and vulnerable team would be a huge disappointment.

Regulation only. What often happens after a long winning streak is snapped is consecutive losses and sometimes it extends longer than two games. The Maple Leafs got very hot there for a stretch but they were brought back down to earth by a 7-1 shellacking in Dallas on Thursday. A close look, however, reveals that the Maple Leafs winning streak had a lot of good fortune attached to it in the form of outstanding goaltending. The streak started with a 3-2 OT victory over New Jersey in which the Maple Leafs were clearly outplayed, not to mention outshot, 38-25. The following game against Boston, the Leafs were outshot 41-26. The next three wins came against three cold teams in Buffalo, Montreal and Phoenix and the last game was the most legit of them all, a 5-2 victory in Colorado. Give the Maple Leafs a little credit for stringing together some wins but like most of their wins this season, the Leafs were the second best team on the ice in at least half of the six victories. James Reimer gets the call tonight in the Leafs fourth consecutive road game in four different time zones.

Winnipeg returns home from a brief two game trip through Anaheim and San Jose. They beat the Ducks 3-2 and lost to San Jose, 1-0. Combined, that pair has three regulation losses at home in 47 games. The Jets are playing with a new found confidence since Paul Maurice took over. In five games since replacing their coach, Winnipeg has four wins and one loss and has not allowed more than two goals against in any game. In its two home games under Maurice, Winnipeg held Phoenix and Edmonton to 19 and 22 shots on goal respectively while firing away 38 and 39 shots on net themselves. Anything close to that here against this beatable team with Reimer in net, gets us to the cashier’s booth.

Both these teams have similar records in both conference play and overall but the similarities end there and it’s not in Seton Hall’s favor. When we look at strength of schedule of these teams, the Pirates rank higher by about 20 spots based on the opposition’s W/L record but that is a misleading stat because it does not consider who the opposition defeated. A more accurate barometer of where teams rank takes into consideration the opposition’s schedule as well and in that regard, the Pirates strength of schedule when factoring in the opposition’s defense, ranks 284th while DePaul ranks 23rd. That’s a huge difference and it tells us that the Hall has beaten up on some very weak defensive schools while the Blue Demons are much more battle tested. When you factor in the opposition’s offense and combine them with the opposition’s defense, Seton Hall ranks 192nd in the country while DePaul ranks 27th. The Pirates are coming off three straight road games and they’re also coming off a crippling, two-point loss to the Johnnies on Thursday. Seton Hall has dropped four of five and while they figure to get better, it is still a school that is too big a risk spotting significant points.

The Blue Demons have played some decent basketball on the road despite some internal issues and injuries. HC Oliver Purnell is a no-nonsense guy that has suspended players for rule violations and benched players for mental mistakes and it’s going to pay off in the long term. The Blue Demons had a strong second half against Xavier on Monday after falling behind by 18 points at halftime. They rallied to cut it to seven before losing it by 10 points but it was a second half the coach insists the team will build off of and carry over into this game. In a game that has the makings of being tight and contested throughout, we certainly like the points in a game the dog can win outright.
