Week 6 NFL

Giants (0-5) @ Bears (3-2) —
Winless Big Blue off to horrific start, with banged-up OL main reason behind -13 turnover ratio; in their three games outside awful NFC East (2-3 is first place), Giants were outscored 73-14 in second half, losing by 18-38-24 points- they allowed 31+ points in all five games (36.4 ppg/game). Throw in travel and short work week, this is tough spot for them. Chicago allowed 40-26 points in losing last two games after 3-0 start; Bears are 0-2-1 as home favorites this year (12-21-2 in last 35) with home wins this year by 1-3 points, plus loss to unbeaten Saints. Giants are 0-2 as road dogs this year after being 7-3 last two years; they’re averaging only 57 rushing yards/game, but have won four of last five visits to Windy City, but those were in happier times. NFC East teams are 4-9 vs spread outside the division, 2-5 on road, 2-4 as underdogs. NFC North teams are 3-5-1 outside the division. Four of five Chicago games went over the total.

Thursday Night Football Betting: Giants at Bears

New York Giants at Chicago Bears (-9.5, 47)

The wheels have completely come off for the New York Giants, who are off to a disastrous start and face a short turnaround when they visit the Chicago Bears on Thursday night. The Giants have dropped their first five games, the franchise's worst start in a non-strike season since 1979, and have shown little resistance while surrendering a league-worst 36.4 points per game. As bad as the Giants have been, they are only two games out of first place in the NFC East.

There is also plenty of concern in Chicago, which is coming off back-to-back losses following a 3-0 start to the season. A stout defense is normally a staple of the Bears, but they have been burned for an average of 28 points per game and have yet to hold an opponent under 21. Quarterback Jay Cutler threw for 358 yards in Sunday's 26-18 home loss to New Orleans, but Chicago's defense allowed Drew Brees and the Saints to control the ball for 36 minutes.

LINE: Chicago opened as a 9.5-point home favorite and has moved as low as -7.5. The total opened at 45 and jumped to 47.5.

WEATHER: Temperatures in the low 60s with clear skies and winds blowing east at 7 mph.

ABOUT THE GIANTS (0-5, 0-5 ATS): While New York's defense has been abysmal, the running game is in shambles with second-year back David Wilson suffering a neck injury on Sunday and still dealing with tingling on Monday. That has forced Eli Manning to to carry a one-dimensional offense and the results have not been pretty - he's thrown a league-high 12 interceptions and been sacked 15 times. "He's certainly trying to do too much, he knows his team and he knows his responsibilities" Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "He's an extremely accountable guy and he's going to do everything he possibly can."

ABOUT THE BEARS (3-2, 1-3-1 ATS): One of the few positives to come out of Sunday's loss was the immense performance of second-year wide receiver Alshon Jeffrey, who had 10 receptions for a franchise-record 218 yards. Of course, Jeffrey's monster day came at the expense of fellow wideout Brandon Marshall, who was limited to four catches for 30 yards and expressed his frustration after the game. "As a receiver, you always want the ball," Marshall said. "But, you know, coach (Marc) Trestman is an offensive guru. Jay's a good quarterback. We're going to do what's best for the team."

* Road team is 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings.
* Giants are 4-1 ATS in their last five Thursday games.
* Bears are 0-4-1 ATS in their last five home games.
* Under is 5-0 in Giants' last five Thursday games.

1. New York has allowed at least 31 points in the first five games, matching a league record set by the Chicago Cardinals in 1954.

2. Bears RB Matt Forte has rushed for 375 yards and also had 27 receptions for 200 more.

3. The teams have not met since October 2010, when the Giants posted a 17-3 home win.

NFL Football: Streaks, Tips, Notes

New York Giants at Chicago Bears

New York's latest collapse, an ugly 36-21 setback to division rival Philadelphia on Sunday at MetLife Stadium has the squad 0-5 SU/ATS on the campaign, 3-10 SU/ATS since week-9 of last season. Giant's have an uphill battle when they visit the Chicago Bears Thursday night. Eli Manning sporting a 53.7% completion rate tossing 12 interceptions vs 8 TD's and Giants without a run game (56.8 RYG) to mix things up is a formula for failure against a Chicago squad that has 10 pick-six since the start of the 2012 season and has scored three defensive touchdowns so far this season. If that were not enough, Giants who can't seem to stop anyone are surrendering a league-worst 36.4 points/game on 269.2 passing (6.8 YPP), 126 rushing yards/game (3.9 YPP). Bears racking up 7.1 pass, 4.7 rush yards/play are the choice here. Home favorites that record six or more yards/play are a solid 13-6-2 ATS on the year, 50-32-4 ATS the past two seasons. A final betting nugget, since 2008 Giants are on a 1-6 ATS road skid off a double digit loss.

Re: NFL Betting News and Notes Thursday, October 10

Giants at Bears
By Kevin Rogers

When the Giants started the 2007 season at 0-2, they found a way to rebound from that early hole to eventually clinch a Wild Card spot and upset the unbeaten Patriots in the Super Bowl. This time around, New York found itself in a similar situation at 0-2 after defeats to Dallas and Denver the first two weeks, but the Giants need to dig deep for any shot at saving this season in which they stand at 0-5.

New York heads to Chicago tonight for a battle with a Bears' squad that is trying to end their own losing streak, albeit two games. Chicago jumped out of the gate with a 3-0 record, but consecutive defeats to Detroit and New Orleans the last two weeks have pushed the Bears into a first-place tie with the Lions atop the NFC North.

Many people figured the Bears would hand the Saints their first loss last Sunday with New Orleans playing outdoors and in crummy weather, but that wasn't the case. The Saints held the ball for 36 minutes, while jumping out to a 20-7 halftime lead. Chicago cut the deficit to 26-18 with two minutes remaining in regulation, but couldn't recover the ensuing onside kick and failed to cover as one-point home favorites.

The Giants are one of three teams that have failed to cover a single game this season (Texans and Steelers the others), while losing each of the last four contests by double-digits. New York dropped its second divisional game of the season last Sunday in a 36-21 home defeat to Philadelphia, as the Giants couldn't hold onto a 21-19 advantage. The Eagles scored the final 17 points of the game in spite of Michael Vick sidelined due to a hamstring injury.

Since scoring 31 points in the Week 1 loss at Dallas, Tom Coughlin's team has been absent offensively on the highway. In defeats at Carolina and Kansas City, the Giants have been outscored, 69-7, hitting the 'under' in two of their three contests away from Met Life Stadium. Since last November, New York has dropped seven straight road games, while not covering once in this span. However, the Giants were never listed as an underdog of this price, as New York routed San Francisco, 26-3 last October as a seven-point 'dog.

The Bears own an 0-2-1 ATS record at Soldier Field this season, which includes comeback victories over the Bengals and Vikings in the first two weeks. Marc Trestman's club overcame a pair of non-offensive touchdowns by Minnesota in a 31-30 triumph in Week 2, while erasing an 11-point second half deficit against Cincinnati in the season opener. handicapper Antony Dinero breaks down Chicago's new offensive philosophy, "Alshon Jeffery set a new Bears franchise record last week and Brandon Marshall didn't pout. Instead, Chicago's No. 1 receiver said his young teammate could be one of the best ever. The Bears bad attitudes have been transformed by Trestman, who continues to open up the offense and will surely have Jay Cutler test the banged-up Giants secondary. If the offensive line helps keep his uniform clean, Chicago's receiving corps should have another big game at the expense of New York's beleaguered defense."

Since Eli Manning arrived as quarterback in New York in 2004, the Giants have split four meetings with the Bears. The Giants are just 1-2 in the last three visits to Soldier Field, which includes a 21-16 victory in December 2007 as a 1½-point road favorite. New York's defense dominated Chicago in the last matchup in 2010 at Met Life Stadium, a 17-6 triumph as the Giants knocked out Cutler and held the Bears to 110 yards of offense.

The Thursday night showcase has belonged to the favorites this season as the 'chalk' is 4-1 SU and 3-2 ATS, while the 'over' has hit in three of five opportunities. However, only twice has the home favorite/'over' combination cashed, coming in Week 1 with Denver and Week 5 with Cleveland.

The Bears are listed as 7½-point home favorites tonight, while the total is set at 47½. The game can be seen on the NFL Network with kick off at 8:25 PM EST from Soldier Field.
