Avalanche at Maple Leafs: What Bettors Need to Know
By Covers.com

Colorado Avalanche at Toronto Maple Leafs (-137, 6)

Patrick Roy’s NHL coaching career is off to a solid start, with wins in each of his first two games behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche. Roy will coach his first road game on Tuesday when the Avalanche visit the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are undefeated in their first three games. Roy can be happy with the early play of goaltender Semyon Varlamov, who has limited opponents to two goals on 63 shots as he tries to prove himself capable of starting for the Russian Olympic team in Sochi.

Toronto faces some questions in its crease following their home-opening shootout victory over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday. Jonathan Bernier allowed the Maple Leafs to come back after James Reimer allowed four goals, taking an early edge in what is sure to be a long battle for the starting goaltender position. Coach Randy Carlyle has not named a netminder for Tuesday, but Bernier has likely earned a shot at his first home start with Toronto.

ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (2-0-0): Captain Gabriel Landeskog will return to Colorado’s lineup after missing one game with a sore knee. 2013 first-overall pick Nathan MacKinnon has three assists in his first two games, finding chemistry with Jamie McGinn and P.A. Parenteau (two goals, one assist each) as he prepares for his first professional game in Canada. The Avalanche will have all of their forwards available since the NHL decided not to discipline Steve Downie for a hit that concussed Nashville Predators defenseman Roman Josi.

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (3-0-0): Mason Raymond has been a pleasant surprise for Toronto since joining the team on a trial basis during the preseason, leading the Maple Leafs with two goals and two assists. Raymond’s role should only increase with David Clarkson suspended and Nikolai Kulemin sidelined by a bone chip in his ankle. Toronto has scored four power-play goals on its first 15 opportunities, while only allowing one goal in 12 times shorthanded as it tries to replicate its 4-0-0 start from 2011-12.

TRENDS:

* Under is 4-1-1 in the last six meetings in Toronto.
* Avalanche are 4-1 in the last five meetings in Toronto.
* Maple Leafs are 1-4 in their last five vs. Western Conference.
* Under is 5-1-2 in Avalanche's last eight road games.

OVERTIME:

1. Varlamov will start for Colorado on Tuesday, while veteran backup and former Maple Leaf Jean-Sebastien Giguere will start his first game on Thursday in Boston.

2. Toronto general manager Dave Nonis spent one night in hospital after falling ill during the second period of the Maple Leafs game against Ottawa on Saturday.

3. The Avalanche not started a season 3-0-0 since 1994-95, when the franchise was still the Quebec Nordiques.

Colorado Avalanche at Toronto Maple Leafs

Toronto Maple Leafs try to push their season-opening win streak to four straight games Monday as they play host to visiting Colorado Avalanche. Toronto has opened the campaign with road victories over Montreal (4-3), Philadelphia (3-1) and most recently won a 5-4 shootout in their season home opener against Ottawa. Colorado selecting Nathan MacKinnon first overall in the most recent draft is already paying dividends as Avalanche opened it's season with home wins over Ducks and Predators outscoring the two clubs 10-2. Colorado with it's scoring punch makes them dangerous opponents but Leafs coach Randy Carlyle is expected to go with Jonathan Bernier who's been rock solid with his new club allowing a single goal on 47 shots over two games and is now 12-2 last fourteen between the pipes with both Leafs/Kings. A hot goaltender, Leafs ridding a 6-1 streak in October home games, the Avalanche on a 1-7 skid in their first road game of the season the view here is Leafs make it a 4-0 start to the campaign.
