Red Wings at Hurricanes: What Bettors Need to Know
By Covers.com

Detroit Red Wings at Carolina Hurricanes (+106, 5.5)

After recording no better than a third-place finish in the Southeast Division en route to missing the playoffs over the last four seasons, the Carolina Hurricanes didn't receive any favors with the NHL's new realignment. Now a member of the presumably tougher Metropolitan Division, Carolina opens its campaign against the Detroit Red Wings on Friday. Detroit made a triumphant Eastern Conference debut on Wednesday as Mikael Samuelsson and Pavel Datsyuk scored 36 seconds apart in the first period en route to a 2-1 victory over Buffalo.

The Red Wings look to make it two in a row when they face the Hurricanes, who were felled by a rash of injuries last season - most notably a sprained MCL to the left knee of Cam Ward in March. The 2006 Conn Smythe Trophy winner is back to full health and joins captain Eric and Jordan Staal as catalysts for the team's success. Eric Staal led the Hurricanes with 53 points while his younger brother struggled to get acclimated to his new surroundings - highlighted by his minus-18 rating last season.

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (1-0-0): Signed to a six-year deal worth $31.8 million in April, Jimmy Howard paid dearly for a giveaway behind his net before securing the win with a 19-save performance against the Sabres. Veteran Daniel Alfredsson, who opted against retirement and signed a one-year, $5.5 million deal in the offseason, recorded three shots while logging a team-best four minutes of power-play time. Fellow newcomer Stephen Weiss contributed by winning nine of 13 faceoffs.

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (2012-13: 19-25-4, 13th East): Jiri Tlusty served as perhaps Carolina's brightest light last season by notching career highs in goals (23), power-play tallies (four), game-winning goals (three) and points (38). Alexander Semin posted literally a point per game (44) while Jeff Skinner is still searching to return to his Calder Trophy-winning form of 2010-11. Veteran Radek Dvorak signed a one-year contract on Wednesday and will provide depth for a team that already has lost fellow defenseman Joni Pitkanen (broken heel) for the season.

TRENDS:

* Red Wings are 21-10 in their last 31 vs. Eastern Conference.
* Hurricanes are 6-20 in their last 26 overall.
* Home team is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
* Under is 3-0-1 in the last four meetings in Carolina.

OVERTIME:

1. Carolina RW Tuomo Ruutu, who played in just 17 games last season, will miss Friday's opener due to a lower-body injury.

2. Detroit killed off a pair of 5-on-3 power plays and all seven shorthanded situations against Buffalo.

3. The Hurricanes struggled mightily on special teams, notching the 27th-best power play (14.5 percent) and 28th-best penalty kill (77.6 percent)

D Money's "On the Ice"
By Denver Money

Calgary @ Columbus: Do you buy the hype of Calgary after last night's performance? I watched part of this game and did see some things I liked, but not sure I am buying into them doing it again tonight. Don't think I like Columbus enough to lay -180 on them, but do I like Calgary enough to play them either....

Detroit @ Carolina: Detroit looked strong in their home/season opener and now they take the show on the road against a decent team in Carolina. Will Cam Ward look better between the pipes than he did last year? That is yet to be seen, but I do think he has a better year than last year. Could have a little value on the Hurricanes at home this evening, but hard to look past the Red Wings as well.

Los Angeles @ Winnipeg: Jets looked better than I thought they would in game 1 but Edmonton also helped them with some shitty play. Los Angeles didn't look as good as I expected them too, but they did manage to play like an experienced team and get the victory in Minnesota. Now we get to see how LA bounces back in their first back to back of the early season and how Winnipeg does in their first home game. This could be one of the best games of the night as both teams look for their 2nd victory on the young season.

Nashville @ Colorado: This is a game that could truly go either way tonight and I would suggest to all, don't be quick to jump on the Avalanche based off their game 1 performance. Did anyone honestly seeing this team come out and score 6 in their opener? I know I didn't. Is Roy already making that much of a difference and will everyone buy into the hype and back the Avalanche tonight? Predators looked decent last night, but they faced one tough team in the St. Louis Blues. Nashville did struggle on the road last year including losing two close ones in Colorado, but I do think the Predators are an improved team. This is a game we certainly need to look into some more.

Ottawa @ Buffalo: Buffalo didn't show me much in their opener that would make me jump on them tonight, but we are getting them at home tonight and Miller is always hard to ignore between the net at home. Also will Ottawa come out strong in their season opener and as a favorite at that? Senators will continue to improve over last year and could certainly pull this one out and show everyone they mean business this year.

New York Islanders @ New Jersey: Damn the Devils are just bad! We could very well see a back to back shutout if they Devils can't figure something out. The only positive think the Devils really have going for them tonight is we get to see Broduer back between the pipes. The Islanders are looking to start like they finished last year and that is playing good on the road. I think this should be a good game, but could get ugly early as well. Devils a small favorite just cause they are at home, but I won't be surprised if we don't see the Islanders listed as favorite before the puck drops.
