Free Picks: Service Plays for Tuesday, September 17

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Tuesday, September 17

Dave Price

St. Louis Cardinals -133

The Cards are showing value at this price with Joe Kelly on the bump. He has displayed nasty stuff while going 8-2 with a 2.16 ERA in 13 starts. He's been at his best on the road where he's 4-0 with a 0.61 ERA in five starts. The Redbirds fell yesterday but are 6-0 in Kelly's last 6 starts following a team loss in their previous game. They are also 7-0 in his last 7 starts on regular rest (4 days) and 4-0 in his last 4 starts as a favorite of -110 to -150. Colorado's Juan Nicasio is just 8-7 with a 4.58 ERA in 28 starts. The Rockies have lost his last three starts. They are 4-9 in his last 13 starts on 5 days' rest and 2-5 in his last 7 starts as an underdog of +110 to +150. The Cardinals are 15-6 in the last 21 meetings. Take St. Louis.

Wunderdog

Baltimore at Boston
Pick: Baltimore +120

The Boston Red Sox had some unfinished business over the weekend. They came out of it grinning like the Cheshire Cat, as they swept their arch-rival the New York Yankees. They truly have nothing left to accomplish the rest of the way. After the big weekend series and the satisfaction of the sweep plus having a day off to gloat, I just don't see this team bringing a lot of focus tonight. Baltimore has other ideas as they need to keep winning to play themselves into a playoffs opportunity. Scott Feldman has been better than Ryan Dempster all season, especially of late where he is 3-1 with a 1.77 ERA in his last six starts. The O's have been strong here of late by taking 12 of the last 17 at Fenway, and have won four straight series openers overall. Play on Baltimore.

Joe Gavazzi

Pittsburgh -170

With last night's near no hitter by Cashner, the Padres ran their recent record at PNC Park to 17-3. The 2-0 loss last night by the Pirates means they have only scored 27 runs in their last 10 games. But it also sets up tonight's money making situation that finds the Pirates to be 19-7 at home following a loss this season. Despite the recent post-ASB meltdown by Locke, he is still 10-5 with a 3.14 ERA for the season. Most importantly, is his return to form start in his last outing. Ina 3-1 victory v. the Cubs, Locke allowed just 1 run, 3 hits and 1 walk in 7 IP. San Diego has won just 5/16 Stults road starts where he has a 4.91 ERA. Stults has not recorded a win in 10 starts since the ASB.

Rocketman

Baltimore @ Boston
Play: Baltimore

The Baltimore Orioles travel to Boston to take on the Red Sox on Tuesday night.  Baltimore is 35-22 the past 3 years when playing with a day off.  Baltimore is allowing only 4 runs per game their past seven games overall where they are allowing teams a combined .225 batting average.  Scott Feldman toes the rubber for Baltimore where he has done decent this year.  Feldman is 12-10 with a 3.54 ERA overall this year, 4-5 with a 3.45 ERA on the road this season and 1-1 with a 1.52 ERA his last 3 starts.  Ryan Dempster gets the start for Boston where he is 8-9 with a 4.70 ERA overall this year and 6-7 with a 4.99 ERA at home this season.  Baltimore is only two games behind Texas for the final Wild Card spot in the American League so every win is huge from here out.  We'll recommend a small play on Baltimore tonight!
