MLB Odds and Picks - Royals look to stay hot against Tigers
By: The Linemakers
Sportingnews.com

Several key American League series that will have a major impact on how the wild card race shapes up begin today. The Rays have four teams within two games of them in the standings. But the closest team, the Yankees, have the toughest series of any of the contenders as they begin a three-game set in Boston. Here’s a look at the pitching matchups for the weekend along with the series prices as posted by William Hill sports books.

Kansas City Royals at Detroit Tigers

Series Price: Tigers -230

Series record: Royals lead 9-7

Weekend rotation:

Friday: Justin Verlander (12-11) vs. Bruce Chen (7-2)

Saturday: Doug Fister (12-8) vs. Ervin Santana (8-9)

Sunday: Max Scherzer (19-3) vs. Jeremy Guthrie (14-10)

Outlook: The Royals not only have held their own against the Tigers this season, but come in hot, winning 13 of their last 18, and have beaten the Tigers in their last two meetings. Winning the first game will be key for Kansas City and the Royals look to be great value at their price (+162). The Tigers have lost Justin Verlander’s last six outings and the Royals have won all five games he’s started against them this season. Look for the Royals to take two of three.

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox

Series Price: Red Sox -180

Series record: Red Sox 10-6

Weekend rotation:

Friday: Hiroki Kuroda (11-10) vs. John Lackey (9-12)

Saturday: CC Sabathia (13-12) vs. Jon Lester (13-8)

Sunday: Ivan Nova (8-4) vs. Clay Buchholz (10-0)

Outlook: Boston would love nothing more than to knock the Yankees out of the wild-card race by getting a sweep and they have the arms to do it. That is why it’s imperative for Hiroki Kuroda to snap out of his five-start funk and help the Yankees take advantage of John Lackey, Boston’s weakest link of the weekend, on Friday.

Oakland A’s at Texas Rangers

Series Price: Rangers -155

Series record: Rangers 9-7

Weekend rotation:

Friday: Dan Straily (9-7) vs. Derek Holland (9-8)

Saturday: Bartolo Colon (15-6) at Yu Darvish (12-8)

Sunday: Jarrod Parker (11-6) vs. Martin Perez (9-4)

Outlook: Everything is starting to unravel at the worst possible time for the Rangers. They were just swept at home by a then-struggling Pirates squad and have now dropped eight of their last 10. They’re not hitting well and their pitching has gone south with a 5.40 ERA over their last seven games. Derek Holland has lost his past two starts and Yu Darvish looks fatigued. Meanwhile, the A’s just keep rolling along with wins in 10 of their last 13 games.

Tampa Bay Rays at Minnesota Twins

Series Price: Rays -210

Series record: Rays 4-0

Weekend rotation:

Friday: Chris Archer (8-7) vs. Kevin Correia (9-11)

Saturday: Matt Moore (15-2) vs. Matt Albers (2-2)

Sunday: David Price (8-8) vs. Pedro Hernandez (3-1)

Outlook: The Rays appear to get an easy break with the Twins but it hasn’t mattered who they’ve played lately, losing 12 of their last 16 games. David Price will start Sunday, which could be for the sweep, but he’s currently on a three-game losing streak. The best news for the Rays is they should be confident against Minnesota-- they have won nine straight against the Twins.

Baltimore Orioles at Toronto Blue Jays

Series Price: Orioles -115

Series record: Blue Jays 7-6

Weekend rotation:

Friday: Jason Hammel (7-8) vs. Todd Redmond (3-2)

Saturday: Chris Tillman (16-5) vs. Esmil Rogers (5-7)

Sunday: Mike Gonzalez (9-7) vs. Mark Buehrle (11-8)

Outlook: The Blue Jays expected to play in meaningful games in September before the season started, but not as spoilers. Their performance over the next two weeks will determine the fate of several teams. They have six games against the Orioles, three against the Yankees and close out the season with three against the Rays. The Jays are currently on a three-game losing streak, but in the previous series, they swept the Twins and capped off a run of eight wins in 10 games. The Jays bats make them a dangerous team, but the O's should win at least two of three.

Friday’s selections:

Yankees (Kuroda) +130 at Red Sox

Royals (Chen) +162 at Tigers

A’s (Straily) +125 at Rangers

Orioles (Hammel) -120 at Blue Jays

Second-half record: 88-88 (+561)
