MLB Odds and Picks – Rookie Jose Fernandez favorite vs. Braves in last start of season
By: The Linemakers
Sportingnews.com

LAS VEGAS -- The Miami Marlins may have the worst record in the National League, but every fifth day, they become one of the best clubs in baseball simply because of one player, rookie right-hander Jose Fernandez.

Fernandez has been baffling hitters all season. He leads the majors in opponents’ batting average (.181) and is second behind Clayton Kershaw in ERA (2.23). In 165 2/3 innings this season, he has struck out 182 batters.

Stats like that should almost guarantee him NL Rookie of the Year honors.

Tonight he takes the mound against Mike Minor and the Braves at Marlins Park in what should be his final start of the season. The Marlins set a maximum of 170 innings pitched for Fernandez, and they’re sticking with it. But at least his final start is at home, where he has been unbeatable. The Marlins only have 30 home wins this season, and 12 of them have come with Fernandez on the mound. In 14 home starts this season, he’s 8-0 with a 1.19 ERA.

His last few outings have been the best of anyone in baseball, including Kershaw. He hasn’t allowed a run in four of his past seven starts while posting a 0.98 ERA, and he comes off one of his better games of the season, beating a hot Nationals squad, 7-0, on Friday.

The only loss Fernandez has encountered over his last 10 outings came at Atlanta on Aug. 30. He served up a two-run homer to Freddie Freeman in the 2-1 defeat. Oddly, it’s his only start against the Braves this season.

For Fernandez to be a -110 favorite tonight is a big deal. Not only is NL East-leading Atlanta starting its best pitcher, but the Braves have also dominated the Marlins in Miami, winning 21 of their last 26 games there since the start of the 2011 season, including the first two of this four-game set.

This will be Minor’s fifth start this season against the Marlins. His record is only 1-1 in those four previous starts, but the Braves won three of the four. However, in two of his outings against them – including his last on Aug. 31 – he gave up four runs. He’s given up four runs in three of his last five starts overall coming into this game.

With the way Fernandez has been dialed in lately, especially at home, Minor will have to be much better than he’s been lately for the Marlins to lose.

This is Fernandez’s farewell 2013 game, and between an additional 15,000 fans from the norm of 19,000 at Marlins Park, and having his friends and family in the stands, look for him to make his last start his best.

Wednesday selections:

Marlins (Fernandez) -110 vs. Braves

Pirates (Burnett) +130 at Rangers

Second-half record: 86-88 (+331)
