Free Picks: Service Plays for Tuesday, September 10

New York Yankees -105

These teams are as evenly matched in just about every category this year, but the Orioles have not put up much offense as of late and I still question them in one run close games. This is a playoff type game and it always seems like the Yankees are prepared for these situations time and time again. New York has been hitting the ball well and should come away with the win behind Nova. Take the Yankees.

Kansas City Royals Team Total Over 4

The Royals head into Cleveland tonight looking to pick up some ground in the wild card race.  They will be facing Z. McAllister who hasnt done to well vs the Royals in the past.  McAllister has posted a 1-1 record vs the Royals with a ERA right around 5.McAllister has been knocked around in his last couple of outings going 0-1 with a ERA right around 10!  Tonight we see the Royals bats busting out and putting up 5 runs as this team total should be done by the 5th.

My free play winner for Tuesday is the Tampa Bay Rays.

Your free play today is on the Tampa Bay Rays to get one step closer to the Boston Red Sox in the AL East by beating them head's up at the Trop.

Clay Buchholz (9-0, 1.71 ERA) finished up a bullpen session in New York over the weekend and declared himself "ready to go" as the Red Sox begin this series with the Rays tonight. Remember, he was HOT out of the gates in the beginning of the season (as you can tell by his record), but a strained neck forced him to the DL and he hasn't been back since... until tonight.

So why am I going against him tonight? Well, for starters, I expect him to be rusty. How can he not be? Plus, manager John Farrell said he's only going to allow Bucholz to pitch 70-75 pitches in an effort to slowly get him ready for their post-season run. So how many innings is 70-75 pitches?

For some it could be five innings. For others maybe only four. For others possibly six. Either way, the bullpen is going to have to pitch a lot tonight and I think that favors the Rays.

David Price (8-7, 3.51 ERA) gets the ball for the Rays and while he hasn't been his dominant self recently, I do expect him to bounce back against the Red Sox tonight with a strong home outing.

He has, however, beaten the Red Sox both times he's faced them this year since after the All Star break, going 16 1/3 innings while allowing just two runs... in Boston!

Take the Rays to get the home win as your free play of the day.

Your Tuesday freebie is the Under in the Royals-Indians game.

Last night these teams played a tight, tense 4-3 game that did hold Under the total, and I expect a similar result tonight with Jeremy Guthrie and Zach McAllister doing the honors this Tuesday.

3 of the last 4 in this rivalry have stayed Under the total, and the Royals have been playing them low-scoring in general this month, as each of their last 3 games and 9 of their last 12 overall dating back to the end of August has stayed Under the total.

Jeremy Guthrie had a bad turn his last time out - 5 runs allowed in 6 innings of work - but his previous pair of starts prior to that one saw just 2 earned runs scored in 12 innings worked. 4 of Guthrie's last 6 starts on the season have stayed Under the total.

Zach McAllister has been hit hard his last pair of trips to the hill, that after enjoying a career-high 3 start winning streak.

I like both Guthrie and McAllister to return to form, and for the runs to once again be hard to come by this Tuesday night at Progressive Field where the Indians have held Under in 13 of their last 19 home games overall.

My comp play for Tuesday will be backing the Cardinals on the Run Line over the Brewers.

It is very simple, St. Louis wants to stay on top of the Central Division, and after their weekend sweep of Pittsburgh their chances look pretty good, especially facing a Milwaukee team they have won 10 of 13 against this year.

Shelby Miller has been a big part of the Cards success against the Brewers, as Miller stands at 2-0 with a 1.47 ERA in his 3 starts versus Milwaukee this season. Miller is also back at home where he has pitched his best baseball this year, going 7-3 at Busch Stadium with a 1.92 ERA.

The Cards come into this series having won 9 of their last 11 games overall, and will be facing a pitcher they have been able to batter around this year.

Wily Peralta is the owner of an 11.57 ERA in his pair of starts against the Cardinals this season, with 22 hits allowed in under 10 innings pitched.

Too much at stake for St. Louis as they look to secure the division title, so back them on the Run Line this Tuesday evening.

My free play for tonight is on the Chicago White Sox over the Detroit Tigers. Yes, I'm taking the home underdog and seemingly worse team of the two, as I'm going against the Tigers, more so, than I am going with the Pale Hose.

I'm not going to list pitchers, cause this one is about momentum, and Detroit just isn't necessarily playing right of late.

The American League Central-leading Tigers have dropped five of six, and that can never be good when going on the road to face a team that has nothing to lose, and would take pride in adding to your demise.

Last-place Chicago has won consecutive games following a nine-game losing streak, and that might be just enough momentum to ride the motivation of knocking off Detroit to get it done tonight.

The Tigers, who happen to be the second-highest scoring team in the majors, have plated just 11 runs in their six September losses. Let's take a shot here with the underdog White Sox.

My free winner for tonight is on the Philadelphia Phillies getting it done over the San Diego Padres.

Real quick here, the Phillies are in after a three-game sweep of the National League East-leading Atlanta Braves, and should be fired up, despite not being able to goto the postseason. After a day off, the Phils host the Padres for the first of three games tonight, looking to continue the winning run under interim manager Ryne Sandberg. The Phils are now 13-10 since Sandberg took over, after those three consecutive one-run victories at home over the Braves.

San Diego, which is 14-31 against the Phillies since 2006, is also in after a sweep, as the Friars took care of the struggling Rockies over the weekend. San Diego did lose two of three when it hosted the Phils back in June so I'm not sure how it'll respond to this road trip.

Nothing worse than being out of the playoff race, one of the lower-rated teams from the East coast and having to play on the East coas with nothing to play for. Take the Phils tonight.

My free play tonight is going to be on the Toronto Blue Jays, as they're laying chalk to the visiting Angels of Anaheim. Talk about bad timing, but the Blue Jays, a preseason pick out of the American League East that went bus, have won 10 of their last 13 and can record their first four-game winning streak since that 11-game run in June had everyone clamoring with 'I told you so's'.

The Blue Jays completed a 5-1 road trip with a 2-0 win at Minnesota on Sunday, and I think are in a good spot to take care of what should be a travel weary Angels team.

There isn't a team on the West coast that wants to travel across the country without something to play for, and making matters worse, the Halos are north of the border after losing a 6-3 game in Minnesota yesterday in the makeup of an April 17 rainout.

That, point blank, sucks, when you have to pop into a town for a make-up game, lose and then travel to another place. Take the Jays in this one, as they'll continue their win streak.

Hollywood Sports

New York Yankees at Baltimore Orioles
Prediction: Baltimore Orioles

Baltimore (77-66) won the opening game of this series by a 4-2 score last night -- and they have then won 5 of their last 7 games after allowing two runs or less in their last game. Additionally, the Orioles have won 5 straight home games with the Total set in the 7-8.5 range. They send out Gonzalez who is 9-7 with a 3.98 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP this season. The right-hander has been better at home with a 3.75 ERA and 1.26 WHIP as compared to his 4.19 ERA and 1.29 WHIP when on the road. Baltimore has won 13 of their last 16 home games with Gonzalez on the mound. New York (76-68) has now lost 5 of their last 6 games against teams with a winning record. The Yankees have also lost 5 of their last 6 games as an underdog. They counter with Nova who is 8-4 with a 3.02 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP this year. Nova has not been as effective on the road where he has a 3.65 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and .270 opponent's batting average as compared to his 2.71 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and .250 opponent's batting average when at home. The Yankees have lost 4 of their last 5 road games with Nova pitching as an underdog. Take the Orioles with the money line in this one.

Boston Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays
Play: Tampa Bay Rays

The Red Sox made one statement against a division rival on their heels this weekend. Now the Rays will give Boston their best shot. The Red Sox lead the Rays by 7 1/2 games in the division, but Tampa Bay is clinging to the second Wild Card spot -- behind Texas, and ahead of Cleveland, Baltimore and New York despite a 3-7 road trip out West. Clay Buchholz, who hasn't pitched in a big league game since June 8, threw a bullpen session Sunday and will start Tuesday's series opener. The right-hander is expected to throw 75-80 pitches against the Rays. Price has good success against the Red Sox this year, with a 2-1 mark and 2.55 ERA in four starts. The Rays return to Tropicana Field for the three-game set against Boston, and will play 11 of their next 14 at home. Over the past two seasons, the Rays are 23-8 at home in September so don't be surprised when we advise you take Tampa Bay for the rest of the year at home.

Oakland at Minnesota
Play: Oakland

The Twins are off a rare victory in a Monday makeup game on this field v. LAA. But that win only lifts their home record to 29-39. They have long ago tossed the towel with recent records of 9-17 and 5-10. Hendriks is not the answer with 5.28 ERA and .302 OBA. Far prefer surging Oakland who holds a 2 game division lead thanks to an 11-3 run in which they have outscored opponents 79-47 with a .303 BA. Parker has not lost in 18 starts since May 22, posting a 9-0 record with a 2.59 ERA in that span. In a pair of outings against Minnesota on this field last year, Parker

NY Yankees +111

The Yankees need this game in the worst way in order to continue their pursuit of an American League wild card spot. What better way to help their cause than beating a team they're chasing. The Yankees starter Ivan Nova is 2-0 versus the Orioles this season with 2 complete games wins and a stellar 1.00 ERA and 0.44 WHIP. Nova is in very good form over his last 3 starts posting a 2.29 ERA. The Orioles starter Miguel Gonzalez is 0-2 in his team starts versus the Yankees this season with a large 7.20 ERA and 1.80 WHIP. The Orioles hurler is in shaky form off his last 3 starts with a lofty 5.40 ERA and 1.56 WHIP.
