Marc Lawrence

Chicago Cubs at Philadelphia Phillies
Prediction: Philadelphia Phillies

When hard-luck Cole Hamels takes the mound for the Phillies in Game Two of this three-game set at Citizen's Bank Park Wednesday night, Hamels will take the hill with team-start wins in 8 of his last 11 efforts during the month of August. Hamels is also 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA in his career home team starts in this series against the Cubs. With Hamels sporting a sharp 1.70 ERA in his last five home starts, look for his luck to go from bad to good here tonight. We recommend a 1-unit play on Philadelphia.

Chicago White Sox -109

While it is no secret that the White Sox have struggled to score runs this season, their numbers are still substantially better than those put up by the Yankees in their current slump. Over the past seven games the Yankees have scored just 2.9 runs per game with a .218 batting average. Chicago has easily handled the Yankees in the first two games of this series and they have a big advantage at the starting pitcher position in this game.

The Yankees will have CC Sabathia getting the start today and he has been horrible in his last three starts. In those games he has a 10.91 ERA with a 2.361 WHIP. For the White Sox, Hector Santiago will be getting the start. This season Santiago has a 3.15 ERA, and a 1.218 WHIP. The Yankees are showing no signs of coming out of their slump, making the White Sox an easy call in this game.

New York Yankees +100

The Yankees are a team that takes alot of the publics betting money. But even die hard Yankee fans and betting backers are starting to realize that this injury plagued veteran team has some problems, both on and off the field. A recent headline - from the NY Times read like this-In Team Meeting, the Yankees Vent and Face Reality On Monday when Derek Jeter and Joe Girardi decided to address the team in a brief postgame meeting, according to several people in the room.Girardi would not discuss details of the meeting, saying, QUOTE:“If we had wanted you in there, we would have invited you.”But one person in the room said, “There were some things that needed to be said.”....I personally bet some of the things said were not so pretty, much like the teams performances for most of this season.Girardi admitted how badly things were going and the array of Yankees’ failures on Tuesday afternoon and issued a warning that may have echoed his thoughts to the team Monday.Quote:“We need to start winning games or we’re not going to be playing in October,” he said, “so there is some concern.” With that said, whether, the Yanks can pull this season out of its current death spiral is yet to be seen, But backing this array of experienced veterans today after yesterdays embarrassing scathing situation , looks like a viable investment on a value line.

Jim Feist

Boston vs. Houston
Play: Over 8½

Boston brings a Top 5 offense into Houston and gets to face a 23-year old pitcher in Jarred Cosart. He has been very good, but has walked 12 in 28 innings and that will be a concern against a Red Sox offense that is first in runs, second in on base percentage. Ryan Dempster goes for Boston and is struggling with a 6.48 ERA his last three starts and Boston is 6-0 over the total in his last six starts. The over is 20-7-1 in umpire Mark Carlson's last 28 games behind home plate vs. Boston, so look for plenty of runs.

Freddy Wills

Cincinnati Reds -120

This will be an extremely early start for the west coast A's at 12:35pm ET on Wednesday. Homer Bailey will take the mound for the Reds on 6 days rest. Bailey has been great with a 2.98 ERA at home, but when he's on 5 or more days rest he's been even better posting a 2.36 ERA at home. The A's can hit, but I think Bailey will have the advantage in the starting pitching match up.

A's send the veteran Bartolo Colon to the mound and asking him to start on the east coast against a good hitting team in a park that's not friendly to the fly ball is a lot. Colon has a xFIP of 4.09, but has gotten away with it by playing in big ball parks. Colon has just a 4.75 K/9 ratio and throws 84.6% fast balls. Well the Reds are ranked 7th in pitch value against the fast ball this year. Oakland is also just 17-35 in their last 52 as an inter league under dog.

Notable Hot Starters L3 GS:
Randall Delgado (3-0, 20.2 IP, 0.87 WHIP, 1.74 ERA)
Doug Fister (3-0, 22 IP, 0.82 WHIP, 0.82 ERA)
Cole Hamels (0-3, 20 IP, 1.30 WHIP, 2.70 ERA)
Jhoulys Chacin (2-1, 22 IP, 1.05 WHIP, 2.86 ERA)
Matt Harvey (1-2, 20.2 IP, 0.68 WHIP, 1.31 ERA)
Shelby Miller (2-1, 16.2 IP, 1.20 WHIP, 2.70 ERA)
Jared Cosart (1-2, 20 IP, 1.25 WHIP, 1.35 ERA)
Madison Bumgarner (1-2, 22 IP, 1.09 WHIP, 0.82 ERA)
Samuel Deduno (3-0, 20 IP, 1.20 WHIP, 1.80 ERA)
Chris Archer (2-1, 23 IP, 0.91 WHIP, 1.96 ERA)
Bartolo Colon (2-1, 21 IP, 1.14 WHIP, 1.29 ERA)

Notable Cold Starters L3 GS:
J.A. Happ (1-2, 11 IP, 2.36 WHIP, 7.36 ERA)
Jordan Zimmerman (1-2, 14.2 IP, 1.84 WHIP, 7.36 ERA)
C.C. Sabathia (0-3, 15.2 IP, 2.36 WHIP, 10.91 ERA)
Ryan Dempster (3-0, 16.2 IP, 1.92 WHIP, 6.48 ERA)

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Wednesday, August, 7

Art Aronson

Dodgers vs. Cardinals
Play: Under 8

Ricky Nolasco (7-9, 3.78 ERA) gets the call for the visitors; Nolasco gave up three runs off four hits with one walk while striking out six over five innings in his team's eventual 6-4 victory over the Cubs on Thursday. The hard-throwing right-hander is now 2-1 with a respectable 3.54 ERA over his first five outings for his new club. While past success guarantees nothing in the future, Nolasco will be throwing with the added confidence today in knowing that when he faced the Cards as a member of the Fish in mid-June, he'd dominate them by giving up one run over seven frames for the victory. Nolasco will be opposed by Shelby Miller (11-7, 2.89 ERA) who is coming off a 13-3 win over the Reds in his last start, giving up three runs off five hits while striking out eight over seven innings. Miller has not given up more than three runs in any of his last five starts and will be looking to improve upon his stellar 6-2, 1.74 ERA home record. Two under the radar hurlers facing off on Wednesday night; expect each to battle into the latter frames and for this one to ultimately sneak below the posted number in the end.

Rob Vinciletti

Tigers vs. Indians
Play: Under 8½

There is a nice totals system that applies tonight. We want to play the under for home dogs like the Indians that are off a home dog loss with a total that is 8 or less if they scored 2 or less runs on 4 or less hits with no more than 1 error, vs an opponent like the Tigers that are off a road favored win while scoring 5 or more runs with no errors. This system has cashed 13 of 16 times. The Tigers have played under in 5 straight August games and Cleveland 4 straight.. The Indians have Danny Salazar making his 2nd start after a dazzling debut where he shut down Toronto here allowing just a run over 6 innings. He will oppose D. Fister who has been lights out of late with a 0.82 era in his last 3 starts. Fister has a 2.71 career era vs Cleveland. Based on the system and the numbers we will go with the under here tonight.

Bruce Marshall

Miami Marlins at Pittsburgh Pirates
Pick: Miami Marlins

"Almost" last night for the Marlins, who pushed the Pirates to brink before succumbing by a 4-3 count on Josh Harrison's pinch-hit homer in the ninth inning. What that again illustrates, however, is how tough an "out" Miami has become over the past couple of months, with superb starting pitching (2.57 ERA since the All-Star break) keeping Mike Redmond's team in every game. The starting pitchers have posted an even better 1.90 ERA in their last seven games, which includes the last effort made by Tom Koehler in his most-recent start last Thursday when holding the Mets scoreless in six innings of work as the Marlins won 3-0. Koehler is also one of those Marlins starters who has been effective lately (reflected in his 3-1 record and 3.18 ERA over his last six starts). And if the Bucs are vulnerable, it is likely when Charlie Morton takes the mound, considering his 4.99 ERA over his last six starts.

Bryan Power

Miami vs. Pittsburgh
Pick: Under

True or False?  The Minnesota Twins average more runs per game than the Pittsburgh Pirates. That would be true. The NL Central-leading Bucs come in averaging less than four runs per game, a fact that I feel will eventually catch up with them. But maybe not tonight vs. Miami. I see this game going Under...

As we all know, the Marlins have the worst offense in MLB.  They rank dead last in home runs, runs scored, team batting average, on base percentage and slugging percentage. They had gone Under in five of their last six games before yesterday's total pushed. The Pirates won the game, 4-3 in walkoff fashion.  Miami has now scored three runs or less all but one time in its last seven games.   They had gone Under in 20 of their last 29 games overall prior to yesterday and five of their last six at PNC Park.

Pittsburgh's starting rotation has the best ERA in baseball, yet Charlie Morton has hardly been a positive contributor to that lately.  But facing this Marlins offense should be a different story.  Miami averages just 2.8 runs per game at night. Same thing w/ Tom Koehler going up against the Pirates offense.  Pittsburgh's offensive numbers are remarkably consistent in that they average slightly under 4.0 runs per game in almost every situation or time frame.

Milwaukee (48-65) has won two of their last three games after their 3-1 victory last night. The Brewers have played 10 of their last 13 games Under the Total following a victory. Milwaukee has also played 6 straight games Under the Total as an underdog. And in their last 4 road games against teams with a losing record, the Brewers have played all 4 games Under the Total. They send out Estrada who is coming off the disabled list for this game after straining his left hamstring. Estrada is 4-4 with a 5.32 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP this season -- but the numbers drop to a very respectable 3.46 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and .233 opponent's batting average when on the road for the right-hander as compared to his 7.71 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and .323 opponent's batting average when at home. Milwaukee has played 4 of their last 5 road games Under the Total with Estrada on the mound. He should fare well against this Giants team that has played 4 straight games Under the Total against right-handed starting pitchers. San Francisco (50-62) has played 4 of their last 5 games Under the Total after scoring two runs or less in their last game. The Giants have also played 5 straight home games Under the Total as a favorite. They counter with Bumgarner who is 11-6 with a 2.69 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP this year. The left-hander has been dominant over his last eleven starts where he has not allowed more than two earned runs in any of them while last at least 7 complete innings. Bumgarner is even better at home in AT&T Park where he enjoys a 2.25 ERA and .190 opponent's batting average as compared to his 3.08 ERA and .196 opponent's batting average when on the road. The Giants have played 5 straight home games Under the Total with Bumgarner pitching as a favorite. Additionally, the Under is 4-0-1 in San Francisco's last 5 games where Bumgarner was on the mound. Lastly, the Brewers have played 5 straight road games Under the Total against left-handed starting pitchers.

It will be up to CC Sabathia to right the ship for the Yankees on Wednesday night, as they try to avoid the series sweep in Chicago. While Sabathia has owned the Sox in the past, he hasn't faced them since 2011 and the big lefty is a much different pitcher today than he was back then.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Sabathia checks in 9-10 on the season with a 4.78 ERA and 1.35 WHIP. Those numbers get even worse on the road and over his last four starts, he's quite simply been one of the most hittable pitchers in baseball, allowing a whopping 37 hits and 22 earned runs in only 19 2/3 innings of work.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
The White Sox will counter with Hector Santiago. He won't reach the radar of most bettors, but the fact is, he's been quietly effective, allowing two earned runs or less in five of his last six starts. He's been a hard-luck loser in all six of those outings, however. The good news is, he'll be facing a Yankees club that has had a tough time facing a pitcher for the first time, as is the case here. While Chicago's offense has been weak, the Yankees haven't been any better at the dish lately, scoring three runs or less in seven straight games.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Chicago's bats have at least shown signs of waking from their slumber in this series, plating 11 runs on 24 hits through the first two games. I look for them to get to Sabathia on Wednesday night, as they complete their second consecutive home sweep of the Yankees (they did it last August as well).

FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
The Rockies haven't had a lot of success on the road this year with a record of 21-35, but the Mets have been equally as futile at home, with a record of 22-32 at Citi Field.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
They host the Rockies on Wednesday, and without David Wright in the lineup, I don't think they deserve to be a favorite against anybody, even when Matt Harvey is on the mound.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Harvey (8-3, 2.21 ERA) allowed three runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings in a 3-0 loss to Miami his last time out. Prior to that, he pitched a gem against the Nats, allowing a single run in eight innings, but failed to get a decision in a game the Mets lost 2-1.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
As well as Harvey has pitched, it hasn't really translated into wins for the Mets. New York has only won seven of his last 16 starts, and five of those seven wins were in one-run ball games. That would translate into a record of 14-2 ATS betting against Harvey on the run line.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
The Rockies send a capable pitcher to the mound in this fixture, with Jhoulys Chacin getting the start. Chacin (10-5, 3.40 ERA) was very sharp, allowing one run on six hits over eight innings in a 4-2 win over the Pirates his last time out. The Rockies have won eight of his last 10 starts, and one of those two losses was a 2-1 pitcher's duel versus the Padres.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Only the Marlins bat for a lower average than the Mets in the National League, yet the Mets are being asked to cover a 1.5 run spread against an opponent with a superior record, with a starting pitcher who has more wins than Mets ace Matt Harvey.

Aaron Harang takes the mound today for Seattle coming of three terrible outings against Boston, Minnesota and Baltimore, the most shocking defeats were in home. Meanwhile J.A. Your Wednesday freebie is the Atlanta Braves in the underdog role at Washington.

The oddsmakers continue to be stubborn and post the Braves in the underdog role in this series against the Nationals, but all Atlanta has done is win the opening pair of games in this series to extend to 12 straight winning games - their longest winning streak since 2000! - and they are also 13-3 the last 16 times they have faced the Nationals.

Atlanta is 16-6 the last 22 times Kris Medlen has started on the road, as Medlen is 1-1 with a 1.71 ERA in his 3 career starts against Washington.

The Nats have dropped 5 of their last 7 games, and they continue to struggle at the plate where they are batting a lowly .228 over those last 7 outings.

Jordan Zimmerman will counter, and after going 9-0 to open the season at home, Zimmerman has gone 0-2 over his last 3 starts at home with a 9.64 ERA.

The chop will not stop tonight, take the Braves to make it a "baker's dozen" as they head back home riding a 13 game winning streak.

Your free play for this Wednesday will be the Tampa Bay Rays as the road chalk to earn the split at Arizona.

The Diamondbacks took last night's series opener with the easy 6-1 win, but even with that loss, the Rays are still on a 28-9 run their last 37 games.

Going to look for Tampa to be able to get out of the desert with the split, as Arizona has not won back-to-back games in just about 2 weeks time.

Chris Archer and Randall Delgado will take to the mound, with Delgado looking for his 4th straight win in as many starts.

Archer meanwhile is coming off a loss that snapped his 4 game winning streak.

Someone has to take the loss, and with Tampa Bay still a very positive 11-3 their last 14 interleague games, I will look for the loser to be the host snakes.

Riding Archer to get back into the winner's circle here, as the Rays cool off Delgado.

Brett Atkins

I want you to play the Miami Marlins as the free pick for Wednesday night, and I want you listing Tom Koehler in Pittsburgh, where he'll face Pirates right-hander Charlie Morton in a rematch from July 27.

Coincidentally, in the midst of a home-dominated series, the only road win in this series over the last eight games, was the Bucs winning in South Beach in that particular game. Koehler allowed five runs and nine hits over five innings after throwing a career-high 109 pitches. Morton, meanwhile, wasn't all that much better, as he yielded four runs and a season-high nine hits over five innings.

Incidentally, the Fish are in on a 4-1 run when Koehler is catching money as an underdog in this price range. On the flipside, the Bucs mired in a 4-12 slide when Morton toes the slab against teams out of the National League East. And make note, Morton is 3-3 with a 5.11 ERA in seven career outings versus Miami

As dominant as the Pirates are, and as much as I believe they're headed to the postseason, a letdown is imminent

Take the underdog here, and list both pitchers.

My free play for hump day (enter the camel commercial for Geico) is going to be on the New York Mets on the Run Line against the struggling Colorado Rockies, who have lost three straight and now must take on New York-ace Matt Harvey. There was no overnight line, but I'm thinking the game will likely be between $2 and $2.25, which means the run line is going to cost us about 20 cents. No problem for me, as I love Harvey in this game.

Matter of fact, since all Run Line plays automatically list pitchers with the starters who are scheduled to go at the time of the wager, I want you to be aware of the starters who end up on your ticket, and want you to be sure the starter of record for the Mets is Harvey. I could care less about Colorado's Jhoulys Chacin. If for some reason Chacin is scratched, your ticket will be voided. So  IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to be sure you have action by re-wagering the game with Harvey for the Mets and whomever the Rockies use in place of Chacin.

Want to hear some crazy shit? Harvey, as dominating as he's been en route to an 8-3 mark and 2.21 ERA this season, the one team he cannot solve is the lowly Miami Marlins. The right-hander has a 3.52 ERA against Miami this season after he suffered a 5-2 loss to the Marlins last Thursday, and has a 1.97 against everyone else.

To be honest, he has won only once in his last six starts, and is 1-2 in those outings. That doesn't concern me, though, as he was bound to have a down period. With roughly 10 starts left this season, and the new month upon us, I think we're going to see the dominating stuff that earned him the starting nod for the National League in the All-Star Game.

Harvey allowed just one run and scattered three hits over six innings but didn't receive a decision in his only start against Colorado in the Mets' 5-2 loss last season. Look for him to dominate in this one, and the Mets to blow it open early.

Remember: Mets on the Run Line, and be sure Harvey is your pitcher of record.

My free pick for Wednesday night is on the Chicago White Sox getting it done over the struggling New York Yankees, who don't appear to be benefitting from the return of suspended star Alex Rodriguez.

While the Bronx Bombers are within reach of the second wild-card spot in the American League, they've also lost seven of their last 10 games and are fading quickly while teams like Texas, Cleveland and even Kansas City are streaking into contention. Things certainly aren't going right, as the Bombers have lost three in a row, including the first two of this series, against a White Sox team that came into this series mired in a 10-game losing streak.

So even though Chicago is buried in the American League Central basement, it has secured the series win, and will be looking for the sweep in this finale. Though the Yanks are handing the ball to ace C.C. Sabathia, even that's not a confidence builder, as he's 0-4 in his last five starts after allowing five runs and 11 hits in 5-2/3 innings at San Diego last Friday.

I'm listing neither Sabathia nor Hector Santiago because I think this is more about momentum, which is clearly in Chicago's favor. In a pick'em game on the South Side of Chicago, take the Pale Hose.
