Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Tuesday, June 25

Bryan Leonard

Mets vs. White Sox
Play: Under 7

Zack Wheeler makes his second Major League start against Chris Sale and the Chicago White Sox. Wheeler fought nerves in his last start but still managed to throw six scoreless innings with seven punchouts. He'll draw the American League's worst offense on Tuesday night. The White Sox have scored just 277 runs and they have the second-worst strikeout-to-walk ratio against right handed pitchers in all of baseball and the worst in the American League by far. That should be a dream matchup for Wheeler. The White Sox don't have very good advance reports on the rookie righty and he has tremendous swing-and-miss stuff.

Chris Sale was sailing right along with a 1.15 ERA in his last five starts before getting tagged by Minnesota. He should bounce back nicely against the Mets here. We have the unfamiliar lefty angle at play, an angle that we love, and the Mets struggle against left handed pitching with a .300 wOBA, ranking 20th in all of baseball. It's going to take the Mets some time to get a look at what Sale's got and by that time, it could be deep into the game. Sale is getting just 2.79 runs of support per game in his starts this season.

With two unfamiliar pitchers going up against bad offenses, runs should be at a premium. Against these lineups, both pitchers should work deep into the game, leaving less time for the bullpens to have to pitch.

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Tuesday, June 25

Art Aronson

Pittsburgh vs. Seattle
Play: Under 7

Jeff Locke (6-1, 2.01 ERA) gets the call for the visitors; Locke gave up four hits over seven innings while walking three in a gem vs. the Reds on Wednesday, unfortunate to get saddled with a no-decision. Locke is second in the NL with a minuscule 2.01 ERA and has allowed four combined runs over his last seven starts (note that he's been particularly effective on the road, going 3-1 with a tiny 1.64 ERA). Locke will be opposed by Joe Saunders (5-7, 4.48 ERA) who went eight frames vs. the Angels on Wednesday, giving up one run off six hits with two walks in the unfortunate 1-0 setback. The southpaw has allowed two runs over his last 15 innings of work; note that Saunders has been particularly effective at home this season, going 4-2 with a 2.53 ERA. If you've followed my selections in the past, you know that "recent performance" plays a part in my handicapping repertoire and there's no debate that both starters come into this contest with considerable momentum. I feel the stage is set for a classic pitchers-duel.

Jeffrey Brandes

Washington Nationals -140

Pitchers:
ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS: TREVOR CAHILL (R) ERA: 3.92 W/L: 3.92
WASHINGTON NATIONALS: GIO GONZALEZ (L) ERA: 3.34 W/L: 3-3

TREVOR CAHILL hasn't won since May 17. In his last start he left in the second inning after being hit by a comebacker. He was struck on the right hip by a line drive in the first inning and left with no outs in the second as a precautionary measure. He is 0-4 with a 6.75 ERA over his past six starts.

GIO GONZALEZ pitched an excellent game in his last start. After the first inning, he retired 14 of his next 15 batters without giving up a hit. Since his last win on May 5, he has made eight starts posting a 2.18 ERA and holding opponents to a .174 average with 52 strikeouts in 53 2/3 innings.

Rob Vinciletti

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Washington Nationals
Play: Washington Nationals

The Nationals fit a solid system that has won 20 of 28 times here tonight and plays on home favorites off a home favored loss while scoring 5 or more runs, vs an opponent like Arizona that arrive off a home dog loss. Washington has done well at home this season vs right handers and has won al 3 times as a home favorite off a home loss in games where they scored 5 or more runs. They have won 7 of 10 as a home favorite in this range and have a pitching advantage with Gio Gonzalez. In his only start vs Arizona Gonzalez was stellar going 7 inning allowing just 1 run. He will oppose Trevor Cahill tonight and Cahill has struggled of late with a 8.70 era over his last 3 starts. Look for Washington to take the opener here tonight.

Jim Feist

Cincinnati Reds vs. Oakland A's
Play: Oakland A's

Cincinnati gets it done at home, but they are a .500 road team. The Reds are 16-37 in their last 53 interleague road games vs. a team with a winning record. This is a grueling stretch, playing their 4th straight road game. 36-year old Bronson Arroyo is fine at home but 1-4 with a 4.45 ERA on the road. he faces an Oakland team that is 6th in baseball in runs scored, 7rd in OBP and 12th in slugging despite playing half their games in a big park. The Reds have never seen Oakland lefty Tommy Milone (3.98 ERA), who has excellent control (20 walks in 95 innings) and has allowed fewer hits than innings pitched. The Athletics are 18-5 in their last 23 home games following a road trip of 7 or more days and 45-16 in their last 61 home games against a right-handed starter! Play the Oakland A's.

Marc Lawrence

Texas Rangers at New York Yankees
Prediction: New York Yankees

A matchup of Japan's finest takes center stage at Yankee Stadium Tuesday evening where Hiroki Kuroda matches serves with Yu Darvish in the Big Apple. Kuroda jumps the bump knowing he is 5-2 with a 2.08 ERA in his last seven-team starts. In addition, the host team is a perfect 3-0 in Kuroda's career team starts when he takes on Texas. With Darvish just 1-3 away in his career team starts during the month of June, we'll back the Pinstripes in a rare home dog role here tonight. We recommend a 1-unit play on New York.

The Phillies might be a pretty demoralized bunch at the moment, their season qucikly unraveling with 11 losses in their last 16 games, and now having to deal with the effects of blowing a 3-0 lead in the 9th inning last night at Petco Park in the latest meltdown by their bullen, which has the worst ERA (4.71) in the NL. In the process the Phils blew a game started by the near-invincible Cliff Lee, and now must turn to the up-and-down Kyle Kendrick, whose recent road starts have been a mess (15 1/3 IP, 26 hits and 15 ER over the last three away). Meanwhile, the Pads have won the last six, and nine of the last ten, starts made by the very serviceeable Jason Marquis, who has posted an acceptable 3.44 ERA in his last five outings as well. This fat Run Line price is too much to resist.

For only the second time all year, the Cardinals are on a three-game losing skid.  They were just swept at home by the Texas Rangers, but while they will now be HEADING to the Lone Star State, they will also drop in class to play the lowly Houston Astros. I like St. Louis to start their week on a winning note....
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
The Cards are 23-6 off a loss this season and 19-3 after scoring two runs or less.  They are a perfect 9-0 after scoring four runs or less in three straight games.  This will be the first time they're seeing the Astros in 2013, but by no means are they strangers. These former NL Central rivals know each other well & St. Louis has really had Houston's number the last three years, going 21-9 head to head.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Jake Westbrook should help turn the Cardinals' fortunes around.  He has a 1.76 ERA in eight starts and comes off a start where he allowed only an unearned run in a 4-1 over the Cubs. He allowed only two hits in seven innings.  Incredibly, the Astros failed to score a single run in the final three starts made by Lucas Harrell against the Cards last year.

The Marlins are rarely "expected" to win games. However, I feel that they're favored here for good reason.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
For starters, the Marlins have quietly gone a solid 12-9 their last 21 games and are coming off a winning road trip.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
As Justin Ruggiano noted: "Awesome road trip. We played some tough teams (Giants and NL West-leading Arizona). To come out with a winning record (4-3), first time this year, you can see things turn around a little bit."
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
These same two pitchers opposed each other back in April, at Minnesota. The Twins came out on top in that one. This time, its the Marlins who are playing at home. Perhaps more importantly, its the Marlins who are sending the hotter pitcher to the mound.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Rookie Jose Fernandez has delivered four straight quality starts, compiling a 1.65 ERA during that stretch.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
After facing him Wednesday, Arizona catcher Miguel Montero said this of Fernandez: "I see him as a Cy Young winner in the near future because he's got all his pitches. He's that good.''
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
In six home starts this season, Fernandez is 2-0 with a stellar 1.75 ERA. He's averaged six inning in those starts, striking out 34 in 36 innings, while walking only 12 and giving up just three home runs. The Marlins are 4-2 (+2.9) when he takes the mound here.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
On the other hand, Correia is 2-3 with a poor 5.56 ERA on the road.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
With the Twins just 14-27 (-10.7) as road underdogs in the +100 to +125 the past couple of seasons, take a look at Miami.

I won with the Indians Monday and have no problem coming back with them again on Tuesday.  As I mentioned in yesterday's analysis, these are two teams heading in very different directions of late.  Furthermore, Cleveland will have its best pitcher (Justin Masterson) on the hill.

FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
1. Different Directions - Cleveland has now won 9 of 12.  Baltimore has lost four straight.  In Monday's 5-2 victory, the Tribe's bullpen pitched pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings. As I mentioned yesterday, Indians starters came in with a 2.67 ERA the previous 11 games. The Orioles' only offense yesterday came via two solo home runs.

2. Justin Masterson - The Indians ace has won his last two starts, allowing only three runs in more than 13 innings.  He has a 3.48 ERA in 16 starts.  In nine of those starts, he's allowed two earned runs or less.  He won both starts vs. Baltimore last season and has beaten them all four times he's faced them over the last two seasons.

3.  X-Factor - Baltimore's starting rotation entered this series with a 4.88 ERA, third worst in all of baseball.

The Bucs have quietly put together the second best record in the major leagues, just one game back of the St. Louis Cardinals. They come into Seattle riding a four game winning streak, fresh off a three game sweep of the Angels in L.A.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
The Mariners have won consecutive games at Safeco, and they took 2-of-3 in their series against Oakland. Despite their recent success, they still have the lowest batting average in the American League, and an offense that is one of the worst in the majors.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
That's not good news for Joe Saunders, who is set to get the start on Tuesday in the series opener. Saunders (5-7, 4.48 ERA) allowed just a single run on six hits through eight innings in a loss to the Angels. That's the Mariners for you, allow one run and tagged with a loss, a common story in Seattle.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Gaby Sanchez had back to back games with multiple hits against the Angels, and he's 6-for-12 with a home run lifetime against Saunders. Russell Martin has also taken him deep, and he Andrew McCutchen and Michael McKenry have all hit .333 against the veteran southpaw.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
The Pirates hand the ball to Jeff Locke, who hasn't allowed a run in two consecutive starts. Locke (6-1, 2.01 ERA) owns the best ERA in the National League. He's produced clean sheets in five of his last seven starts. He's facing one of the league's least dangerous lineups in a park notorious for being kind to pitchers. It could be another tough night for Seattle at the plate.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Just to be clear, this is the team with the second most wins in the Major Leagues, and their starter owns the league's lowest ERA, and they are facing the team with the league's worst batting average, who starts a pitcher with an ERA that's close to 5.00. Does this sound like a game that should be priced at -120?

Quietly, the Tampa Bay Rays have MLB's best numbers against left-handed pitching this season. They lead all of baseball in batting average (.287), slugging (.453), OPS (.798) and rank second in OBP (.345). The reason for their success is in part because they have the ability to stack the lineup with right-handed hitters. Last week against Andy Pettitte, eight of Tampa's nine batters came from the right side – the lone exception was James Loney who for whatever reason is hitting .358/.940 vs. southpaws. The Rays ended up pounding Pettitte for nine hits and five earned runs in an 8-3 win. Toronto's Mark Buehrle has some fairly weak splits (.285/.339/.452) vs. righties compared to lefties (.229/.283/.410). He’s been in good form of late but I really respect Tampa’s team plate approach. They aren’t the most potent offense in the league but force opposing starters to really work and typically take advantage of mistakes. Tampa's Matt Moore continues to struggle, allowing 22 earned runs in his last four starts. Also during that stretch a dismal 15-14 K-to-BB ratio. Moore limped through his last start against the Blue Jays allowing six hits and four walks and only two strikeouts in five innings. I project we’ll see some runs in this one and made a play on the over.

Philadelphia Phillies +108

The Phillies gave one away last night and I expect them to get their revenge today. Kyle Kendrick has a 3.56 ERA this season which is slightly better than the 3.63 home ERA posted by Jason Marquis. The Padres are batting .237 against right handed starters and scoring 3.9 runs per game so I expect them to struggle against Kendrick today. The Phillies have a .254 batting average over their past 7 games. That may seem like a mediocre number, but when compared to the .229 batting average from the Padres it puts a favorable advantage in our corner. Marquis has struggled in his career against this Phillies going 6-8 with a 5.57 ERA and a 1.815 WHIP.

Matt Fargo

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Seattle Mariners
Play: Seattle Mariners

Pittsburgh has won four straight games following an unlikely sweep in Los Angeles over the weekend as all four winners came in the role of underdog. Now the Pirates are favored on the road for just the fifth time all season as they look to continue to make up ground against the Cardinals who they trail by just a game in the National League Central. The reason they are favored is due to the success of Jeff Locke as he has been outstanding with a 2.01 ERA and 1.13 WHIP through 15 starts. He has been even better on the road with a 1.64 ERA and 1.07 WHIP but despite a 3-1 record, Pittsburgh is just 3-5 in his eight road starts. He has received little to no run support as the Pirates are averaging only 3.07 rpg in all of his starts while getting just one run in each of his last two road starts. The Mariners are 19-8 in their last 27 Interleague home games against left-handed starter. Seattle took two of three against the A's over the weekend to move to two games over .500 at home and turns to Joe Saunders who has tossed five straight quality outings. Three of those were on the road where he started off horrible but his work at home has been consistent all season. He has a 2.53 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in seven starts with six of those being quality performances. He too has been hurt with poor run support although it is better at home. He faced the Pirates twice last season while with Arizona and went 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA and 1.07 WHIP covering 14 innings. The Pirates are just 8-20 in their last 28 Interleague road games against left-handed starters.

The Braves have gone a miserable 7-11 over their last 18 games dating back to June 6th, and if their weekend series loss in Milwaukee was any indication, they don't appear ready to turn the corner just yet.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Let's face it, Atlanta has been a subpar road team this season, posting a 19-22 record. As bad as the Royals have played for stretches, they're still a .500 club at home.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
It's not as if the Braves have a decisive edge on the mound to warrant their favorite price tag tonight. Kris Medlen will take the ball for the visitors. While he's pitched well for much of the year, Atlanta hasn't given him any run support - just three runs per start, in fact. He's allowed more hits than innings pitched while giving up seven home runs in 43 1/3 innings of work on the road, with the Braves winning only three of his seven outings.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Ervin Santana will get the nod for the Royals. He's quietly been lights out lately, allowing just three earned runs in 28 2/3 innings pitched over his last four starts. Perhaps most impressive is the fact that he's issued only four walks while giving up just one long ball over that stretch. Santana last faced the Braves as a member of the L.A. Angels back in 2011. That start resulted in a complete game shutout. Obviously times have changed and he'll be facing a far different lineup this time around but I do expect him to bring plenty of confidence to the table.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
The Braves are hitting just .235 as a team on the road this season and haven't been any better lately, posting a collective .232 batting average over their last 10 contests. Atlanta may be the superior team in this matchup, but given current form it doesn't have much of an edge at all. Note that these two teams split a two-game series in Atlanta earlier this season, with the Royals coming through as a +154 underdog.

Yankees at home +120 against the Rangers.  Like going against Texas after a big series win against St Louis...Good letdown spot, and NY will be ready for this one, they OWN Texas in their own park!

Chicago Cubs vs. Milwaukee Brewers
Play: Chicago Cubs +1.5

This game features the 31-43 Cubs at the 31-43 Brewers. Edwin Jackson has underachieved all year but has been alot better as of late. He's faces Kyle Lohse who is 2-6 with 3.68 ERA. The Cubs know they have a rare chance to win against competition that's not that much better then them. Public is 50/50 on this game yet the line has gone from -150 to -125 I love the Cubs +1.5 for a easy win.

Detroit Tigers -125

Why we like the Tigers on Tuesday at -125...here we have two teams that are playing at two different levels at this point in the season. The Angels are experiencing a 8-13 June with a 33-43 overall record while the Tigers are experiencing a 13-8 June with a 42-32 overall record. The Angels will be pitching CJ Wilson who comes into Tuesdays game with a respectable 3.61 era on the season but does have a bloated road era of 4.91 through 40 innings. There are a few negatives that jump off of the page with Wilson; first off, he carries a 4.80 era in first innings this season where he has allowed 4 Doubles, 3 HRs, 11 BBs & 10 Ks through his 15 1st innings. Next, Wilson will be pitching this game on 5 days of rest, and on the season he has a 3.98 era on 5 days of rest where he has allowed 32 hits in 31 innings while allowing 5 HRs. Lastly, Wilson has made two starts IN Detroit since 2011 where he allowed a combined 15 hits, 11 runs & 8 BBs through 12 innings of work. This Tigers team has a combined .247 average against Wilson with 3 HRs through 158 ABs while Miguel Cabrera & Prince Fielder have a combined .445 average off of Wilson through 31 ABs. The Tigers will be pitching Rick Porcello who comes into this game with a 4.74 overall era but does come in with a 3.32 era over his last 19 innings of work where he allowed 15 hits on 2 BBs and 16 Ks. Porcello does have a 4.46 era at home on the season but there is room for encouragement as he has allowed just 3 HRs at home compared to the 10 HRs that he has allowed overall on the season. From a bullpen standpoint, the Tigers have the edge with a 3.99 era compared the Angels 4.15 era. With Porcello pitching deeper into games at home compared to Wilson on the road, the Tigers pen will have the advantage. From an offensive standpoint, the Angels are averaging 5.1 rpg over their last seven games with a .294 average while the Tigers are averaging 5.3 rpg over their last seven games with a .317 average as well as averaging 5.4 rpg with a .281 average and 18 HRs against LHPs on the season. A few trends to keep in mind is that the Angels are 2-3 after playing with a day off while the Tigers are 5-1 after playing with a day off. The Angels are 13-20 in road games while the Tigers are 26-13 in home games. Play on the Tigers on Tuesday at -125.

This should be an entertaining game tonight at the Stadium, as a pair of top-of-the-rotation pitchers square off. Yu Darvish is certainly all of that, but struggling Rangers' bats have made life difficult for him. The Rangers have dropped five of his last six starts. The Yankees have an ace of their own in Hiroki Kuroda who has a slightly better ERA than Darvish on the season, without the fanfare. Kuroda is 5-2 at the Stadium with a healthy 2.08 ERA on the season. The Rangers have staggered of late, especially in the role of a favorite where they are just 1-7 in their last eight. The Yankees are 21-10 in their last 31 when following an off day, and the Rangers are just 1-8 here in their last nine trips. Take the Yankees.
