Free Picks: Service Plays for Saturday, June 22

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Saturday, June 22

Brett Atkins

My free play for Saturday is on the Boston Bruins to go up 3-2 in the Stanley Cup Finals over the Chicago Blackhawks, even though this one is back in the Windy City. Over the first two games we've witnessed some brilliant goaltending and outstanding defense, and then bursts of offensive prowess, which saw one game hit 11 goals on the scoreboard.

Expect the unexpected is the name of the game with these two, it appears.

As much as I believe Chicago emerged as the best team in the league this past season, I still think the Bruins have the right momentum right now and came into this series playing better hockey. This is a crucial game for the Bruins to win, as they need to put themselves in a position to win Game 6 at home, rather than giving the 'Hawks two more chances after this to win just one.

Take the road team tonight, as Boston prevails, getting back to its defensive nature.

My free winner for Saturday is on the Toronto Blue Jays, catching money from the Baltimore Orioles, as the American League East rivals continue their weekend set at Rogers Centre, where the Jays have been scorching hot.

Point blank, because I don't have anything more than momentum on this game, the timing is perfect to take the Jays, who have nine in a row, and were in perfect position to exact a little revenge on the Orioles, who had won four of their seven meetings with Toronto this season going into this series.

Look for the Jays to make it 10 in a row

My free winner for Saturday is on the San Francisco Giants, as they're going to be out for a little bit of revenge after losing at home last night, to the lowly Miami Marlins.

I am not going to insist on you listing the starting pitchers - Miami's Jacob Turner and San Fran's Barry Zito - cause it really doesn't make a difference to me who is going. The defending World Series champs are going to pissed at themselves for last night's loss.

But I will tell you I don't mind the fact Zito is going, as the veteran southpaw has mastered the Marlins during his career, as he sports a 5-1 record and 2.45 ERA in eight starts against Miami. Plus, Zito has been dominant at AT&T Park this season, as he sports a 4-1 record and 2.06 ERA in 2013.

Let's play the champs in this one, as the Giants get the win.

Reds / Diamondbacks Under 8

Tonight’s game features two of the hottest pitchers in the National League. The Reds go with Mike Leake who is 7-3 on the season with a2.64 ERA, .266 OBA and 1.22 WHIP. Over his last 7 starts he has a 1.15 ERA and has allowed one earned run against or less in six of those seven starts. Over 7 road starts Leake is 5-1 with a 2.34 ERA. The Diamondbacks go with Patrick Corbin tonight, and they are 13-1 when he starts this year. He is 9-0 with a 2.28 ERA, .212 OBA and 1.01 WHIP. At home he is 5-0 with a microscopic 1.71 ERA, .206 OBA and 1.01 WHIP. These two teams met last night for the first time this season with the Dbacks winning 11-5. Before that game the Dbacks had gone UNDER the total in 4 straight and 5 of 6, and the Reds had gone UNDER the total in 6 straight (with a push at 8). Historically these two teams play to the UNDER with the UNDER 42-17-4 in their last 63 meetings. The UNDER is 6-1 in Leake’s last 7 starts and 4-0 in his last 4 road starts. The UNDER is 7-1 in Corbin’s last 8 starts and 5-2 in his last 7 with a lower total set between 7-8.5. I’m on UNDER 8 runs tonight for 2 units.

Wunderdog

Baltimore at Toronto
Pick: Toronto +1.5

The Toronto Blue Jays were expected to be a strong contender in the rugged AL East, but they suffered a lot of injuries, and simply were not living up to anywhere near the expectations. That has all changed, as this team has finally hit their stride. They come into this contest as the hottest team in baseball with nine straight wins. They have outscored their opponents in these games by an amazing 56-20 margin. There is certainly value here to ask this team to just be competitive at home, and grabbing them on the plus side of the runline certainly affords a valued play in this one. Play Toronto on the run line.

Will Rogers

LA Dodgers vs. San Diego
Pick: San Diego

This figures to be an emotionally charged game tonight in San Diego (not often you can say that!) as Dodgers starter Zack Grienke faces the team that injured him back on April 11th in the midst of a bench-clearing brawl.  But unfortunately for Grienke, this start comes on the road where he's not nearly as effective, plus the Padres are a hot team right now.  This is a free play on San Diego.

Here are my keys to the game.

1.  Padres Are Hot - San Diego has taken the first two games of this four-game series, including a 5-2 win over Clayton Kershaw last night. Overall, they have won 9 of 11 and are 7-4 vs. the Dodgers head to head this year. They have won eight in a row at Petco Park and 11 of 13.  For the season, they are a strong 24-14 at home.

2.  Grienke On the Road - Throughout his career, Grienke has always pitched better at home compared to on the road, and this season with the Dodgers has been no different.  He is winless in four starts away from Chavez Ravine, turning in a 7.45 ERA, and that includes a loss the last time we saw him.  On June 16th, he surrendered five runs in just five innings, taking the loss in a 6-3 defeat to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

3.  X-Factor - While Padres starter Edinson Volquez hasn't necessarily pitched well of late, he does own a 14-5 TSR as a home underdog of +125 or less.

Steve Janus

Los Angeles Angels -118

The Angels are showing solid value as a small home favorite tonight against the Pirates. Los Angeles will clearly be motivated in front of the home fans, especially after losing Game 1 of the series last night. Even with the loss on Friday, Los Angeles is 6-3 over their last 9 and haven't lost two straight in over a week.

Both teams send out quality starters in this one, but the edge going to the Angels. Pittsburgh's Francisco Liriano is a miserable 1-4 with a 6.63 ERA and 1.637 WHIP over 7 career starts vs the Angels. Liriano has also been pretty fortunate on the road. He's 2-2 with a 2.70 ERA, but his 1.372 WHIP indicates a bit of luck.

Adding even more value here is the fact that we have a solid system backing the Angels. Average AL hitting teams, hitting .265 to .279 are an impressive 33-13 vs excellent NL starting pitchers (ERA less than 2.70) in the month of June.

Jack Jones

A's/Mariners Over 7½

Both Daniel Straily and Aaron Harang are getting way too much respect from the books tonight. This total should be set closer to 9 than 7.5, and I'll gladly take advantage by backing the OVER.

Straily has gone 4-2 with a 4.97 ERA in 11 starts, 2-1 with a 5.30 ERA in six road starts, and 1-0 with a 5.89 ERA in his last three outings. Straily is 0-1 with an 8.68 ERA and 1.822 WHIP in two career starts against Seattle.

Harang has gone 3-7 with a 5.73 ERA in 11 starts this season, including 1-2 with a 5.51 ERA in his last three outings. In one career start against Oakland, Harang has gone 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA and 2.997 WHIP.

Jeff Alexander

New York Yankees -150

The Yankees have lost the last five times Sabathia has started against the Rays, but he was pretty solid in the two home starts during this stretch and has a 3.48 ERA in 31 starts against Tampa Bay. Plus, he's a whole lot more proven than Rays rookie Alex Colome, who only has one start under his belt. The Yankees have won 10 of Sabathia's 15 starts this season, including 6 of his 8 at home where he has an ERA of 3.12. The Yankees are an amazing 90-34 in Sabathia's last 124 starts as chalk. Also, the Rays are only 36-76 in their last 112 visits to the Bronx

Red Dog Sports

Boston at Chicago
Play: Under 5

These two played a 6-5 score in Game Four and are now tied 2-2 in games. Game Five moves to Chicago. I expect to see better defense and the two goalies to play well. My guess is we see a 2-1 type of score that stays under 5.

Joe Gavazzi

Pittsburgh +110

The Pirates transitioned seamlessly to the West coast beating LAA 5-2 Friday night for their 9th win in 14 starts. Liriano has become an integral part of their outstanding rotation with a 2.44 ERA, 1.25 WHIP an 55/19 KBB in 48 IP. Liriano has been even better on the road where in 4 starts he has a 1.37 ERA, more than offsetting the work done by Williams from this mound of late in which he has posted a 1.71 ERA in his most recent 3 starts. Though Williams has been LAA's most consistent pitcher with a 3.48 ERA in 7 starts, the truth is that the 33-41 Angels do not deserve this price point against the 44-30 Pirates who have a winning record on the road. Make this your Top Dog of the Day.

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Saturday, June 22

John Ryan

Cincinnati Reds vs. Arizona Diamondbacks
Play: Cincinnati Reds

10* graded play on the Cincinnati Reds using the reverse run line and the money line. Reds are installed as a slight dog and many books offer ‘reverse run lines’ where you are laying -1 ½ runs using the DOG. The simulator shows a high probability that the Reds will win this game in a blowout. I like playing this as a 6* unit using the money line and then a 4* unit laying the – 1 ½ run line (if available for you). Arizona is just 18-30 (-18.7 Units) against the money line in home games facing NL teams allowing 4.3 or less runs/game on the season over the last 2 seasons. Reds are a solid 22-8 (+12.0 Units) against the money line in road games revenging a loss to current opponent as a road favorite over the last 3 seasons; 60-30 (+24.7 Units) against the money line after batting .250 or worse over a 20 game span over the last 2 seasons. Leake starts for the Reds and he is 20-7 (+12.9 Units) against the money line after walking <=1 hitters each of his last 2 outings over the last 2 seasons. Reds’ Corbin is an undefeated 9-0 on the season, but I strongly believe this will not be one of his best days against the Reds. Leake is 7-3 with a 2.68 ERA and a 1.218 WHIP in 14 starts. I believe that Leake is every bit as good as Corbin and the Reds will rebound from their 11-5 trouncing yesterday.
