The Oakland A's and the Texas Rangers have exchanged blows with each winning a game in this series. Oakland got the best of Texas last night, but that poises this Texas team to do what they have done better than any team in baseball - come back strong after a loss. The Rangers are the kings of the hill in this spot at 78-37 when following a setback in their last 115, and at home to pretty much even odds they carry a lot of value. The A's have had consistency problems with Milone, and they have fallen to 1-5 in his last six starts, following a quality start in his last outing. Make the play on Texas to rebound from last night's loss.

My free winner for Wednesday will be the MInnesota Twins, getting it done over the Chicago White Sox.

There may not be a better time to side against Chicago's Chris Sale, who has been in a  recent funk of late, as he's lost each of his previous three starts. Sale, who is 5-5 with a 2.43 earned run average in 12 starts, is 2-4 in seven road outings.

Minnesota seemingly took the upper hand in the series yesterday, scoring a 7-5 win over the White Sox. The Twins are now 4-2 against Chicago this season, after losing last season's series by a lopsided 14-4 margin.

Take the Twins tonight.

Brett Atkins

I scored an easy winner in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals, hitting the under. I'll do it again with the same thing in this game tonight, as I expect Boston's premier defense to step up once again and control a slower and more physical pace.

Boston has a good chance to seize control of this series with a win tonight, and I'm not so sure it's safe to lay the money against a talented and hungry Chicago team, but what I can tell you is we have the top two goaltenders in net, and that makes a huge difference.

The books are getting hammered with these totals, and by the sharps who are playing them accurately. Tonight the Under is right play with this game, as defense is imperative from both teams, if they want to win.

Take the Under

3♦ Blackhawks/Bruins UNDER

Extreme turnaround by the starters in tonight’s contest gives this game a totally different look than it would’ve had if played around five weeks ago. At that time, Milwaukee’s Kyle Lohse was in the midst of a five game stretch where he did not post a quality start. Combined during that stretch, Lohse threw 27.2 innings, allowed an unbelievable 71 total bases, had a 1.81 WHIP, 6.51 ERA, and 16/9 K:BB numbers. Things have turned around for Lohse as he’s now had three straight quality outings with two of them coming against the strong offenses of Oakland and Cincinnati. The change in results has been drastic during this current run as Lohse has pitched 20 innings, allowed just 26 total bases, recorded a 2.25 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, and posted 12/2 K:BB numbers. This consistent span is enhanced tonight by his recent ownership of the Astros (4-1, 1.59 ERA last two years). Houston remains a poor offensive team having been held to two runs or less in 11 of 17 games this month so expect Lohse to have a strong performance in this spot. Houston’s Erik Bedard has been consistent for an even longer span as he’s now yielded two runs or less in six of his last seven starts. The overall seven game numbers are: 39.2 IP, 3.40 ERA, and 1.36 WHIP but if you eliminate the one poor game against Kansas City, the other six show 35 IP, 2.31 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and only 43 total bases allowed. Bedard benefits from the absence of RH power bat Ryan Braun here and Minute Maid Park as his home/road splits indicate. His home ERA is 2.36 (road 6.69), home WHIP 1.24 (road 1.74), opposing BAA .206 (road .308) and OPS .660 (road .947). I have enough trust in the bullpens here including the red hot Jon Axford to keep the back third quiet and pitcher friendly home plate umpire Bruce Dreckman helps too.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. New York Yankees
Play: Los Angeles Dodgers

We want to Play against Home Favorites with a total that is 8 or less that are off a road dog win and scored 5 or more runs vs an opponent off a road dog loss that scored 4 or less runs. These Home favorites are losing 80% of the time if both teams had a total of 8 or less in their last game. The Yankees are off a long 10 game road trip and teams coming home off long trips have trouble in the first game back having a hard time focusing as they get back home. The Yankees are hitting just .200 and scoring 3 runs per game the past week. On the Season the Yanks are hitting just .228 vs leftys. Tonight they will Face Lefty Chirs Capuano who has a solid 2.77 road era. NY will counter with Phil Hughes who has a 6.52 home era. The Yankees are hitting just .219 vs National League teams while scoring just 2.3 runs. Look for the Dodgers to take game one of the series.

Jack Jones

Milwaukee Brewers -115

The Milwaukee Brewers will be motivated to bounce back from a 1-10 loss to Houston in Game 1 of this series Tuesday. I like their chances of responding with a victory considering the edge they have on the mound in this one.

Kyle Lohse continues to pitch at a high level while coming off a career year last season with St. Louis. The right-hander has posted a 3.84 ERA and 1.218 WHIP in 13 starts in 2013. Lohse is also 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA and 0.900 WHIP in his last three starts.

Erik Bedard is clearly washed up as he just hasn't been the same starter he once was. The left-hander has gone 2-3 with a 5.24 ERA and 1.618 WHIP over 12 starts this season.

Lohse is 10-7 with a 2.60 ERA and 1.047 WHIP in 18 career starts against Houston. Meanwhile, Bedard is 0-2 with a massive 11.87 ERA and 1.918 WHIP in two career starts against Milwaukee.

Lohse is 15-2 (+12.9 Units) against the money line vs. teams outscored by opponents by 0.5 or more runs/game on the season over the last 2 seasons. The Astros are 26-53 in their last 79 games as a home underdog. Houston is 54-124 in its last 178 games as an underdog overall. Bet the Brewers Wednesday.

Steve Janus

White Sox/Twins UNDER 7.5

Look for a low-scoring game tonight between the White Sox and Twins. Chicago will send out their ace Chris Sale, who continues to pitch well despite playing on a pretty poor team. Sale has a 2.43 ERA and 0.902 WHIP over 12 starts and has been just as effective on the road with a 2.66 ERA and 0.972 WHIP. A big key here is that Sale has owned the Twins. He's 3-0 with a 0.90 ERA and 0.700 WHIP over three starts.

Minnesota will counter with Kevin Correia. In 13 starts Correia is 5-4 with a 3.97 ERA, but the key here is that he has taken his game to another level at home. In seven starts at Target Field, Correia has a 2.83 ERA and 1.238 WHIP. He shouldn't have any trouble keeping a White Sox offense that has struggled on the road in check.

The UNDER is a dominant 9-1 in Sales last 10 starts with a total of 7-8.5 and 4-1 in COrreia's last 5 home starts with a total of 7-8.5. The UNDER is also 20-9 in the Twins last 29 games following one or more consecutive overs and 37-17-1 in the White Sox last 55 road games vs a right-handed starter.

Dave Price

Cincinnati Reds -131

The Reds have been an outstanding investment at home where they are 25-12 in their last 37. They went down yesterday but are 12-2 in home games following a loss this season. They are also 25-6 the last two seasons when out for revenge for an upset loss at home. Jeff Locke has been good for Pittsburgh, but he's been far from a lock on the road where the Bucs are 3-9 in his last 12 starts. The Reds have won 7 of 9 at home this season with Bronson Arroyo on the mound, and they are 4-0 in Arroyo's last 4 home starts as a favorite. Take Cincy.

Jeff Alexander

St. Louis Cardinals -155

Chicago's Edwin Jackson has pitched well in his last two outings, but he doesn't have a good track record against St. Louis. In fact, he's 1-3 (2-5 on the moneyline) with an ERA of 4.91 in 7 starts against the Cardinals. St. Louis is the top hitting team in the NL, and it has especially crushed righties. The Cards are batting .285 and scoring 5.3 runs per game against righty starters this season. They are 39-18 in their last 57 home games versus a right-handed starter. Bet the Red Birds.

SCOTT DELANEY

My free play for Wednesday is the St. Louis Cardinals over the Chicago Cubs in National League Central action, as I like the Redbirds to get it done on the Run Line.

Journeyman Edwin Jackson is on the hill for the Cubs, and I don't think that's going to pay off for the baby bears, despite the right-hander coming in after one of his strongest starts of the season, last Friday against the Mets.

Jackson, who allowed just one run on five hits with seven strikeouts over six innings against the Mets, is just 3-8 with a 5.40 ERA on the year and certainly can't compare last week's opposing lineup to the Cardinals.

I'd much rather back Jake Westbrook, who is 2-2 this season with a 2.05 ERA and has a lifetime 5-2 record against the Cubbies.

Cardinals will roll past their division rivals in what should be an easy blowout win.

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Wednesday, June 19

CRAIG DAVIS

Wednesday free play winner is the Oakland A's.

The Athletics know they will leave Texas still leading the AL West, regardless of tonight's outcome... but getting a win will pad their lead.

The A's have, however, dropped three of five since winning 21 of 26, but own a three-game lead over Texas... who has dropped seven of their last eight and own a 5-12 record in the month of June.

Tommy Milone (6-6, 3.61 ERA) gets the start for the A's and is 1-1 with a 2.18 ERA in his last three starts. He's only allowed two or fewer runs in eight of his 14 starts this year and has a solid record teams over .500.

Texas starter, Justin Grimm (5-5, 5.59), is 0-2 with an 11.40 ERA in his last three starts, and he allowed seven runs and 10 hits in 7 2/3 innings during an 8-0 loss to Toronto last Friday.

Texas might be at home, but the A's are sending the better pitcher to the mound and should win this one handily.

Take Oakland as your free play of the day.

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Wednesday, June 19

Teddy Covers

NY Mets at Atlanta
Play: Atlanta -1.5

After getting swept by the Mets yesterday, Atlanta was in no laughing mood.  They are in danger of losing their first series at home all year if they can’t notch the win today; an MLB best 24-10 on this field this year.  17 of those 24 wins have come by multi-run margins; consistent moneymakers at home when laying -1.5 on the run line.

Even after yesterday’s sweep, the Mets are 17-31 in their last 48 ballgames.  Starter Shaun Marcum is coming off a beating at the hands of the Cubs, the seventh time in his last ten starts that he’s notched only four or fewer strikeouts.  He’s winless in three previous tries on this field, and the suspect Mets bullpen behind him was used extensively in yesterday’s doubleheader.

Braves starter Kris Medlen has owned the Mets lineup.  In 16 outings against New York he’s never lost a game, including a 3-0 mark while throwing four consecutive quality starts against them over the past two seasons.   Medlen has been eating up innings, throwing into the seventh in six of his last nine starts.  The Braves bullpen behind him remains an elite unit; #1 in the NL in ERA; and most of their key bullpen arms didn’t see action yesterday.  Expect a blowout!
