There are very few times you will find such a favorable line when the Reds have Mike Leake on the mound. We are getting some value here because the Cardinal’s will also have their ace Adam Wainwright getting the start. The value still likes with the Reds because even though Wainwright’s numbers have been solid they do not compare to Leake’s. In his last 3 starts Leake has a 0.44 ERA and 0.885 WHIP and the Reds are a perfect 3-0 in those games.

Wainwright has not had a very successful career against Cincinnati. He is 4-7 in 11 starts with a 4.27 ERA. When he played against the Reds back in April he received a losing decision after 7 innings pitched. This matchup falls into a system to play on home underdogs like Cincinnati when they have a starting pitcher whose ERA is 3.70 or better on the season in the National League and they have a good defensive catcher that is allowing 0.5 or less stolen bases per game on the season. This system is 51-32 (61.4%) over the last 5 seasons.

The Phillies come into Friday's game against the Brewers riding a 5-game winning streak, thanks in large part to the emergence of outfielder Domonic Brown. Over the last 2 weeks Brown is hitting .415 with 10 home runs, 20 RBI, 14 runs scored and 4 stolen bases. Brown and the rest of the offense should be able to produce enough offense for the Phillies to come away with at least a 2-run win tonight.

That's because the Brewers don't figure to do much of anything offensively against Philadelphia's Cliff Lee. Lee has returned to a CY Young threat in 2013. He's 7-2 with a 2.45 ERA and 0.962 WHIP over 12 starts. He's surprisingly been even better on the road, where he's 5-1 with a 1.53 ERA and 0.774 WHIP.

Milwaukee's Alfredo Figaro will be making just his second start of 2013. In his first outing he allowed 4 runs in just 5 innings of work, surrendering 3 home runs to a pretty weak Twins offense. Figaro has been primarily been used out of the bullpen, as this will be just his sixth career start. He's pitched past the 5th in just once in his career and likely will be ran out of this game early given the way the Philadelphia is swinging the bat.

New York Yankees -174

The New York Yankees attempt to pick up their 5th win in a row tonight against the Mariners. The Yankees knocked off the Mariners last night 6-1 after Phil Hughes pitched a very good game, which he needed to boost his confidence, picking up just his 3rd win of the season. The Yankees are 5-5 in the last 10 played and currently sit in 2nd place in the AL East, trailing the Boston Red Sox by 1.5 games.

The Seattle Mariners struggles continue and it doesn’t look like the bleeding will stop anytime soon. The Mariners sit in the 4th spot in the AL West, trailing the division leading Texas Rangers by 11 games. The Mariners enter tonight’s game riding a 2 game losing streak, and are 4-6 in the last 10 played.

Pitching Matchup:

Seattle’s J. Bonderman is coming off his MLB Season debut after not playing for over 2 years, recovering from shoulder and elbow surgery. Bonderman recorded just 1 strikeout while picking up an ERA of 13.50. I would not want to be in his shoes today as the New York Yankees bats are heating up.

The Yankees will counter with H. Kuroda. Kuroda is 0-2 over his last 3 starts even though his starts have been quality. The Yankees do not score runs when he pitches. Kuroda is 2-2 lifetime against the Mariners with an ERA of under 3.

Key Trends:

Yankees are 6-2 in the last 8 meetings in Seattle.
Yankees are 6-1 in Kurodas last 7 starts vs. a team with a losing record.

Colorado Rockies -151

The Colorado Rockies will attempt to get back into the winners column after taking a extra innings loss to the San Diego Padres last night. The Rockies are currently tied for 3rd in the NL West with the S.F. Giants and sit 2.5 games behind the leading Diamondbacks. The Rockies are 32-29 on the year, 5-5 in the last 10 played, and have a losing streak of 1 game.

The San Diego Padres look to keep climbing the NL West. Currently the Padres sit in the 4th spot of the division and 6 games behind the top Diamondbacks. The Padres are 28-32 on the year, 6-4 in the last 10 played, and are riding a 2 game win streak.

Pitching Advantage:

Rockies J. De La Rosa vs. Padres E. Volquez

De La Rosa is coming off a quality start giving up 2 runs against the Dodgers helping him pick up his 7th win of the season. De La Rosa is 7-3 with an ERA of 3.10. De La Rosa looks to pick up his 6th straight start. He shutout the Padres through 6 innings earlier this season.

Key Trends:

Padres are 1-5 in the last 6 meetings in Colorado.

Rockies are 8-0 in De La Rosas last 8 starts vs. Padres.

Wunderdog

Tulsa at Seattle
Pick: Tulsa +6.5

Tulsa has been at the bottom of the WNBA since moving from Detroit. Despite an 0-4 start, this team is becoming talented, especially now that they have a solid PG in Skylar Diggins. This team has the depth to challenge a Seattle team that will not have Sue Bird, and Lauren Jackson all season. The Storm is off of a huge upset win as a 10-point underdog at home vs. Phoenix, and they very well could be flat for this one against a winless team. The talent distance between these teams with the Seattle injuries isn't much at all, so the dog should be in this one late. Take Tulsa.

Friday freebie is the Texas Rangers over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Rangers just dropped 2 of 3 at Boston, and last night's walk-off homer by David Ortiz surely hurt, but Texas steps down the ladder in competition tonight when they face a Toronto team that is still sitting at 9 games under the break-even mark for the season.

Texas has won 5 of the last 6 series meetings against Toronto, and rookie Nicholas Tepesch sports an ERA just over 2 for his last 3 trips to the hill.

Toronto will send Esmil Rogers out to the mound for just his second start of the year. Hard to see Rogers going deep in this game, especially against the big bats the Rangers have to offer.

Going to go with Texas to bounce-back after last night's stinging loss in Beantown.

Brad Wilton

Friday night free play is the Over in the Braves and Dodgers.

Last night Los Angeles skunked Atlanta by a 5-0 count. I think the bats will get cooking tonight for the Braves, as they have had a day now to get their bodies on the pacific time zone clock.

3 of Atlanta's the last 5 game have played Over the total, while 4 of Los Angeles' last 7 have also played Over the total.

Paul Maholm has made 12 starts this season for the Bravos, and 9 of the 12 have ended up going Over the total, including 6 in a row.

Hyun-Jin Ryu has seen the Over go 4-1-1 the last 6 times he has made the climb up on the hill.

After last night's shutout, time for Atlanta's bats to wake up.

Take the Over at Chavez Ravine tonight.

Alright, so, the Brewers...

Yes, the Phillies have won five straight. And, yes, they're handing the ball to Cliff Lee tonight - big deal. Sounds ludicrous, right? I mean, here's the masterful ace on a roll again, boasting a 5-0 mark and 1.54 ERA in his last six starts, and I dare go against him? Especially when he's facing a kid who will make his second Brewers start ever, right?

Quick question, off everything I've just told you: why isn't this line any bigger?

You think the oddsmakers are giving Lee respect by making him a $1.45 favorite, or do you think they're making just inviting enough for those who won't mind laying that 'low of a number' with him? I think they know the Brewers are capable of touching him up, and this kid Alfredo Figaro might just step up this time around.

Lee has a rather high ERA (4.79) against the Brewers, and on the road in a rowdy ballpark, he just might be in the showers early.

I'm taking a shot here with the Brewers plus the money, expecting the Phillies to stub their toe after five straight wins, before possibly closing out the series with a couple of wins this weekend. Irony here: don't list the pitchers! I obviously don't care if Lee doesn't go, cause that would be a benefit, and I obviously don't mind if a young pitcher like Figaro is replaced.

My money is on the Brewers.

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Friday, June 7

Chris Jordan

On the heels of yesterday's comp winner on the New York Yankees, I will take another American League powerhouse in the Detroit Tigers, as I think they're going to get the best of the Cleveland Indians, and we're playing this on the Run Line, which means we have Justin Verlander over Ubaldo Jimenez.

I'm actually going against a pitching system in this game, as I just don't believe it's safe to go against Verlander right now, as he's getting hot while the Indians have lost four straight games.

Verlander comes in after winning his last three starts, thanks in part to some incredible run support, the latest being a 10-3 win in Baltimore after firing seven quality innings. He already beat the Indians recently, during a rain-soaked slugfest in Cleveland back on May 22.  Jimenez was on the losing end of that.

Normally I'd look at the revenge aspect, but when you have a weather-altered game like that one, it's very hard to believe we saw the best of those pitchers, and if Jimenez even chalked that up in his memory bank.

Indians are in a bad spot today, and I'm going to side with Detroit's elite four-pitch starter, who will combine his power and command and because this one is at home, will likely go deep into this game.

Tigers win this one, 7-1.

3♦ DETROIT -1.5

Joe Gavazzi

LA Dodgers -110

And a child shall lead them or 2 as may be the case tonight. Since Puig has been recalled from Chattanooga, he has brought an infusion of energy to a high priced veteran team Batting .438 with 3 home runs and 9 RBI, LA has won 3/4 since his insertion in the lineup. Rookie Ryu has been equally important to whatever success the Dodgers have had. A record of 6-2 with a 2.25 ERA is better from this mound. Pitching at home, Ryu is 4-1 with a 1.58 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, 33/7 KBB and .190 BAA. Maholm has been the beneficiary of more than 6 runs/game support in posting a record of 7-4 with a 3.34 ERA. Yet on the road, Maholm has a 5.30 ERA. 5 game win streak of the Braves was snapped last night making the momentum shift to the home team.
