Yankees at Orioles: What Bettors Need to Know
By Covers.com

New York Yankees at Baltimore Orioles (+130, 8.5)

The Baltimore Orioles face their first real adversity this season, losing the last five games at home including two in the ninth inning. The Orioles look to change their fortunes when they host the first-place New York Yankees on Monday to start a three-game series. Baltimore has dropped into a tie for third with Tampa Bay, four games behind the Yankees in the American League East. The Orioles went 1-2 last month at New York, which won 9 of 12 before being rained out Sunday.

Manny Machado and Adam Jones are among the league leaders in hits and Chris Davis is near the top in homers (12) and RBIs (40). But the Orioles’ starting pitchers have lasted more than six innings once in the last 10 games. Yankees slugger Robinson Cano is coming off a two-homer game Saturday and is batting .338 with 24 blasts in his career against Baltimore.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees LH CC Sabathia (4-3, 3.19 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Freddy Garcia (0-2, 5.51)

Sabathia was slated to pitch Sunday before the rainout, so he will take the mound against a team he has had a lot of success against. The veteran left-hander is 17-4 in 26 career starts against Baltimore with a 3.03 ERA. Sabathia has allowed three or fewer earned runs in seven of nine games in 2013, but has only one victory in his last five turns. He has surrendered eight homers in 59 1/3 innings.

Garcia has allowed four homers in 16 1/3 innings during his first three starts for the Orioles. The veteran right-hander, who owns a 152-103 career record, gave up two runs over 6 2/3 innings during his first outing before being touched up for eight in 9 2/3 frames his last two. Garcia is 5-4 in 12 starts with a 4.09 ERA against the Yankees. Travis Hafner is 15-for-33 with four home runs against him.

WALK-OFFS

1. Yankees closer Mariano Rivera is 16-for-16 in save opportunities, his second longest streak to start a season. He converted the first 28 chances in 2008.

2. Jones is 14-for-44 with three homers and 10 RBIs in his career against Sabathia.

3. The Yankees, off to their second best 43-game start in the last 15 years (27-16), are 18-0 when scoring the first run.

Arizona Diamondbacks at Colorado Rockies

Two hurlers going in opposite direction match up at Coors Field when D'Backs lefty Patrick Corbin and Rockies Jon Garland head to respective mounds. Corbin with the ability to throw quality strikes is undefeated at 6-0 (8-0 TSR) with a sparkling 1.52 ERA, 1.078 WHIP and 17.91 Batter-Out-Rating per nine. Snakes top hurler has yet to allow more than 2 runs/game striking out 41 batters while issuing 17 walks over his eight starts. On the other mound, struggling Jon Garland at 3-4 with a 4.89 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 11.88 BOR/9 has lost four of his last five starts including one hooked against Corbin. D'Backs nipped 2-1 in Miami yesterday are ripe for a bounce back as they're 5-3 on the road following a loss, 4-0 off a loss handing the ball to Corbin. If that were not enough, consider that road teams with a left-handed starter that can punch batters out (BOR>15) are a smart 52-21 this season winning by 2.3 runs/game.

LAS VEGAS -- We haven't had too many opportunities to lay a relatively low price with Clayton Kershaw this season, but tonight at Milwaukee, the Dodgers are only -127 against Yovani Gallardo. Based on the way the Dodgers have played this season, the number still may seem too high, but the Brewers haven't exactly been lighting the scoreboard up themselves.

The month of May has been very telling about each of these teams. The Brewers’ 3-14 record is worse than the Marlins’ and Astros’ (both 4-13), and the Dodgers are right there at 4-12. The Brewers are coming off a 2-8 road trip, and the Dodgers are currently on a three-game slide. The Dodgers have also lost six straight on the road.

You know you're going to get a good outing out of Kershaw, but the problem all season with betting on him is that you also know you're not going to get much support from his teammates. Kershaw is 4-2, and his 1.40 ERA is tied for the lowest in baseball, but he's only getting 2.1 runs a game a game from the Dodger bats.

It's amazing that Kershaw has been able to win four games with that lack of support. Over his last four starts, a total of 12 runs have been scored ... by both teams!

Kershaw has been outstanding over his past two starts in Milwaukee, allowing only one run over 14 innings. Kershaw also beat the Brewers, 2-0, on April 28 in L.A., where he struck out 12 over eight innings.

It hasn't just been Kershaw that has given the Brewers fits, it's been basically anyone who throws left-handed. The Brewers are 4-13 against left-handed starters this season.

Despite the Brewers being 5-0 on Mondays, we think this is a great opportunity to lay a small price with Kershaw, as well as taking the game UNDER 7.5 runs.

Monday's selections:

Dodgers (Kershaw) -127 at Brewers

Dodgers/Brewers UNDER 7.5 (-105)

Cardinals (Miller) -140 at Padres

Marlins (Sanabia) +155 vs. Phillies

Nationals (Duke) +130 at Giants

Nationals/Giants OVER 8 (-110)

Season-to-date record: 81-73 (+970)
