In this matchup tonight, we have our perception/reality game of the day. The perception is that Philadelphia will return to 2011 form at which time they were among the best teams in the National League. But after an 81-81 season of last, the Phillies are off to a 16-19 start. Though Hamels has pitched much better of late and has a solid history at this site, he still enters the matchup with a record of 1-4 and 4.34 ERA. The reality is that it is the D Backs who are the winning team following a 3 game sweep of the Dodgers to move to 19-15. It is also a fact that Arizona has won all 6 Corbin starts over which time Corbin is 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 32/10 KBB. This year, it has been highly profitable to play .500 or better teams at home/win vs. .500 or worse road teams/loss. Arizona is the real winner tonight!

Cole Hamels signed a six-year, $144 million contract (was the second-biggest contract ever signed by a pitcher at the time) last year on July 24. He would go 6-2 over his final 12 starts of 2012, with the Phillies going 9-3. With questions surrounding Halladay’s arm and Lee coming off a 2012 season in which won just SIX games in 30 starts, the Phillies were relying heavily on Hamels in 2013. The three-time All-Star and 2008 World Series MVP pitched poorly in his first two 2013 starts (0-2, 10.97 ERA) but has since complied a 2.31 ERA while holding opponents to .171 average over his last five starts. However, he has just a 1-2 record to show for it (team is 1-4) since he's been backed by an average of 2.1 runs. His 2013 record stands at 1-4 with a 4.34 ERA in seven starts, with the Phillies going 1-6, minus-$746 vs the moneyline, the third-worst mark in MLB!

Hamels’ mound opponent in this contest is Arizona’s Patrick Corbin, who is 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA in six starts. The D’backs are a PERFECT 6-0 in those starts, as Corbin’s plus-$665 moneyline mark ranks third-best in the majors. The only thing stopping me from making this a bigger play is the fact that Hamels has pitched so well lately (with NO support and is over due for some help) plus the fact that he’s 3-1 with a 3.47 ERA in seven career starts vs the D’backs, with the Phillies going 6-1. It’s also hard to ignore the fact that the Phillies have won six of the last eight matchups with Arizona, hitting .309 while averaging 5.4 runs. That said, Corbin’s near-perfect performance up to now in 2013 “wins the day.”

The Kansas City Royals should not be an underdog to the Baltimore Orioles tonight given the edge they have on the mound. Baltimore will be starting the washed-up Freddy Garcia, who is no more than a spot starter in this league.

Kansas City gives the ball to Jeremy Guthrie, who is one of the most underrated starters in the game. He had a monster second half last year, and that has carried over into 2013. Guthrie is 4-0 with a 2.39 ERA and 1.113 WHIP through six starts this year.

While Guthrie has never faced Baltimore, Garcia has gone up against Kansas City 28 times in his career. He's gone just 10-13 with a huge 5.73 ERA and 1.543 WHIP over those 28 starts.

The Royals are 15-2 in Guthrie's last 17 starts overall. Kansas City is 8-0 in Guthrie's last 8 starts when working on 4 days of rest. The Royals are 9-2 in Guthrie's last 11 starts as an underdog. Bet Kansas City Thursday.

Jeremy Guthrie has been on fire since coming over from Colorado last season. He's 4-0 with a 2.39 ERA in 6 starts this year, and the Royals are 15-2 in his last 17 starts. Guthrie hasn't allowed a run in his last 2 starts while pitching 15 2-3 innings. Freddy Garcia hasn't had much luck against Kansas City. He has a 5.73 ERA against the Royals, and his clubs are 2-9 in his last 11 starts against them.
