Three Streaking Under Pitchers On The Mound Tuesday

Tuesday's MLB schedule features a few starters that have pitched well enough to keep scorelines under the total in back-to-back starts. Here is a look at three streaking under pitchers around the majors.

Homer Bailey, Cincinnati Reds (1-3, 3.38 ERA)

The under is 2-0 in Bailey's previous two starts and 3-1 in his four starts heading into Tuesday. He was the hard luck loser on April 26 in a 1-0 loss versus the Washington Nationals despite having one of his better starts on the season. He pitched seven strong innings and allowed the one earned run on five hits. The Reds righty has been excellent in his last four starts posting an ERA  of 2.39 in 26 1/3 innings pitched.

Bailey faces the Atlanta Braves Tuesday. He was 1-0 with a 2.13 ERA in two starts versus Atlanta in 2012. The over/under was 0-1-1 in those two games.

Kirk Medlen is scheduled to start for the Braves.

Travis Wood, Chicago Cubs (2-2, 2.50 ERA)

Wood is coming off his longest outing of the season on May 2 in a 4-2 loss to the San Diego Padres. The lefty went 7 2/3 innings and surrendered three runs on four hits en route to the loss. The Cubbies are one of the best under bets on the season at 12-19 O/U and the under is 4-2 in Wood's starts. The Cubs supply Wood with just 3.33 runs per game and he boasts one of the best WHIP totals in the Nation League at 0.91.

Wood faces the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field Tuesday. The Cards will counter with righty Lance Lynn.

Wood was 0-2 in three starts versus St. Louis in 2012. He gave up 16 earned runs in 16 innings.

Scott Diamond, Minnesota Twins (2-2, 3.97 ERA)

Diamond will make his fifth start of the season Tuesday. The Twins are 0-3-1 O/U in Diamond's starts. The Canadian is has strung together three quality starts in a row and has a very respectable 15.9 pitches per inning. He has exhibited excellent control this season with just three walks in his 22 2/3 innings pitched. His stats look a little inflated due to a rough outing to start his season. Diamond was knocked around and chased from the game against the New York Mets on April 13. He lasted just 4 1/3 innings and allowed four earned runs.

The lefty is on the hill versus the Boston Red Sox Tuesday. Fellow Canadian Ryan Dempster is scheduled to start for the Sox.

This will be Diamond's first career start versus Boston.

MLB: Streaks, Trends, Notes

Detroit Tigers at Washington Nationals

Ten teams step out of their comfort zone Tuesday for Inter-League play including the 19-11 (+$309) Detroit Tigers at 17-15 (-$41) Washington Nationals. Tigers sweeping Braves earlier this season are now 32-25 vs the Senior Circuit the past three seasons including 11-16 on the road (not counting playoff). Nationals already 3-0 vs the Junior Circuit this campaign are 26-28 L3Y's in IL play with 15-12 mark playing in Washington. The red-hot Tigers ridding a 9-1 streak have Anibal Sanchez (3-2, 1.82 ERA) toeing the rubber. The righty has had great success vs Nats posting a 1.97 ERA in going 8-0 with his teams 13-6 over the 19 starts (MI/FLA). Jordan Zimmermann (5-1, 164 ERA) gets the call for Washington. The hurler off back-2-back shutouts giving up 3 hits over 17 innings has never faced Tigers and heads to the hill with a 4-6 TSR in IL play since joining Nats. The teams last collided in 2010 a series Tigers swept in Detroit marking six straight victories over Washington.

LAS VEGAS -- What an outstanding matchup we have in store for us Tuesday night, when the Tigers (19-11) travel to Washington to play the Nationals (17-15).

The Tigers have perhaps the most feared lineup in baseball, anchored by reigning Triple Crown champ Miguel Cabrera. Cabrera may be on his way to another Triple Crown, leading baseball with a .385 average and 36 RBI.

The Nats’ Jordan Zimmermann, who Cabrera and the Tigers face tonight, is tied for the NL lead with five wins and is third best with a 1.64 ERA.

It’s hard to say who is hotter right now. Cabrera is almost making the Triple Crown look common; Zimmermann hasn’t surrendered a run in his past 18 innings, allowing only three hits and two walks over that span.

Zimmermann hasn’t exactly been racking up stats versus teams like the Astros, either, like the Tigers did as they piled up dozens of runs over a four-game weekend set in Houston. Zimmerman shut down pretty decent lineups of the Reds and Braves.

The Tigers recently swept those same Braves, from April 26-28, and have won nine of their last 10 games. And while pretty much everyone beats up on the Astros, the Tigers did it with a little more pizazz, outscoring them, 37-10.

Taking the mound for the Tigers tonight is Anibal Sanchez (3-2, 1.82 ERA), who takes things up a notch when he faces the Nationals. In 19 career starts against Washington as a member of the Marlins, Sanchez is 8-0 with a 1.97 ERA.

Sanchez is coming off a 6-2 loss to the Twins, when he allowed three runs in six innings. Tonight’s start will be his second following a sensational 17-strikeout, eight-inning performance against the Braves.

The Tigers bats have been pounding the ball lately, hitting .316 with 19 home runs over their past 10 games.

Detroit has beaten the Nationals franchise six straight times. The Nationals were called the Expos and played in Montreal when they last beat the Tigers, on June 12, 2002.

The Nationals haven’t been mashing the ball like the Tigers lately, but they’ve been battling for wins under the pressure of fan and media expectations and sudden questions about underperformance. They’ve won two of their last three series, splitting the other one with the Braves, 2-2.

Washington now returns home to happy fans excited to see their team again. The Nats have won the close games, responding better than ever to those situations.

We like the Nationals to win another close, low-scoring game tonight. The Tigers are -113, and the total is 7 OVER -115.

Tuesday’s selections:

Nationals (Zimmerman) +103 vs. Tigers

Nationals/Tigers UNDER 7 (-105)

Rockies (De La Rosa) -105 vs. Yankees

Blue Jays (Happ) +121 at rays

A’s/Indians OVER 8.5 (EVEN)

Season to date record: 56-39 (+1833)
