Monday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Two starters on bad teams are pitching very well and could generate good profit for those looking for a live underdog.

Here's a look at Monday's streaking and slumping starters:

Streaking

Lucas Harrell, Houston Astros (2-2, 4.08 ERA)

Don't let Harrell's numbers fool you. His stats are skewed because of a horrendous outing against Oakland on April 7, when he gave up eight earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. In his four other starts, Harrell has given up five earned runs and only two home runs. The Astros have won their last two with Harrell on the mound.

Jeff Samardzija, Chicago Cubs (1-4, 3.03 ERA)

Samardzija is another guy who is pitching gems without getting wins. The Cubs have lost all of his last four starts. But Samardzija has given up only 11 earned runs in his five starts, has struck out an average of 7.8 batters per game, and walked only 10 opponents. The under is 4-1 in his starts.

Slumping

Mike Pelfrey, Minnesota Twins (2-2, 7.94 ERA)

Pelfrey is struggling in his first month in the American League. In his last three starts, Pelfrey's been rocked for an 11.57 ERA and has only five strikeouts. The over is 4-0 in Pelftey's outings.

Matt Cain, San Francisco Giants (0-2, 6.33 ERA)

Cain looks nothing like the pitcher that had a 3.60 ERA in the 2012 playoffs, pacing the Giants to the World Series. He has given up at least one home run in each of his last three starts, and has made it to the seventh inning once. San Francisco is 0-5 in Cain's starts.

MLB: Streaks, Tips, Notes
Sportspic.com

Cleveland Indians at Kansas City Royals

The Cleveland Indians will find it tough getting into the win column when they hook Ubaldo Jimenez (0-2, 10.06 ERA) against Wade Davis (2-1, 3.20 ERA) in the finale of this four game set. The right hander has twirled three consecutive non quality starts surrendering 3 yard-ball, 18 runs and is now ridding an 0-8 skid his last twelve trips to the mound (3-9 TSR). Indians on a 2-10 road skid w/Jimenez, 8-17 on the road with the hurler since he joined the team in 2011 will be hard pressed reversing a 2-7 slide playing in Royals back-yard. Stick with the home team, Royals are 3-1 so far this season with newly acquired Davis heading to the bump 2-0 life-time vs Tribe with a 2.39 ERA.

San Francisco Giants at Arizona Diamondbacks

When defending Champion San Francisco and Matt Cain (0-2, 6.59 ERA) take on Arizona and Ian Kennedy (1-2, 4.70 ERA) at Chase Field Monday night there is good chance Giants will be snake-bit. With Cain yielding six home runs in his last three starts, Kennedy off a smart 6 innings of 1 run ball against the Giants in a no-decision last time out expect D'Backs to make it 9-0 vs San Francisco w/Kennedy touching toe to rubber while Giants fall to 2-6 on the road after a loss, 1-4 opening a series on the road.

MLB Odds and Picks
By: The Linemakers

The Braves, starting tonight, are in for a tough week, as they welcome the Nationals for a four-game set. Atlanta is on a free-fall, losing four games in a row and seven of its last nine, but the Braves still have a 2.5-game lead over the Nats in the NL East.

Julio Teheran (1-0. 3.16 ERA) has the task of snapping the streak tonight against Stephen Strasburg (1-4, 3.16 ERA).

Just before the Braves started to go cold, they swept the Nats in Washington, beating Strasburg in one of those games. The sweep sent the Nats into a tailspin they just got out of over the weekend by sweeping the Reds. Prior to the Reds series, Washington had lost nine of their previous 12 games.

As for Strasburg, his -125 price today indicates his season isn't off the the start many expected. After beating the Marlins, 2-0, on opening day, he’s lost his past four starts. Outside of getting rocked in 6-3 loss to the Reds on April 6, he’s pitched well enough to win, but his team has scored only four runs over his last three games combined. Additionally, the defense behind him has faltered, and the relievers have thrown gasoline on the fire.

Despite things going poorly Strasburg thus far, we think he breaks out of the funk today, largely because of the Braves’ recent losing ways. The Braves have an outstanding bullpen and starting rotation, but their bats have been failing them. They are right behind the Astros with the second most strikeouts (224) in baseball and several of their key players are hitting .236 or less.

A’s still going OVER

The A’s play at Anaheim tonight and bring their impressive 21-5 OVER/UNDER mark with them.

That record figures to improve tonight, as Tommy Hanson (2-1, 4.24 ERA) and Dan Straily (1-0, 2.70) meet up. The A’s still lead baseball in runs scored with 138, and have gone OVER in seven of their last eight games.

Monday’s plays:

Nationals (Strasburg) -125 at Braves

A’s/Angels OVER 8 (-105)

Season to date record: 44-29 (+1655)
