MLB Betting Notes
We're not quite done with the first month of baseball, but there are several teams off to disappointing starts and some off to surprisingly good starts. If you bet the games, you have to be aware of the latest trends and not just the hot and cold pitchers. Below, we'll take a look at the top three and bottom three teams to watch before the final results on Wednesday, April 24.
Top Three Teams to Watch
The Atlanta Braves (15-5, $921) are the hottest team in baseball. The additions of Justin Upton along with his brother B.J. has been the best off-season move in the game. Justin has 11 home runs to lead baseball, but they are only hitting .251 as a team. It's been the pitching that has been masterful at times, led by Paul Maholm of all people (1.03 ERA).
The Colorado Rockies (13-7, $620) are one of the biggest surprises in baseball. They usually have problems with pitching and it's still not great (4.18 runs allowed per game). But their hitting has been outstanding, as they average 5.45 runs per game led by Dexter Fowler, who has seven home runs and Michael Cuddyer, who has a .343 batting average.
The Texas Rangers (13-7, $411) lost OF Josh Hamilton in the off-season, but are off to an outstanding start. Part of that is due to a pitching staff led by Yu Darvish (2.02 ERA). The staff ERA is second best in baseball at 2.84 ERA. Ian Kinsler leads the team with five homers and Lance Berkman is hitting .333 to lead the Rangers.
Bottom Three Teams to Avoid
The Washington Nationals (10-10, $-222) lead the league in errors and their best fielder, 3B Ryan Zimmerman, ins on the disabled list with a hamstring injury. OF Bryce Harper (.366, 7 HRs) is off to a great start, but he's getting no help. The Nats are averaging just 3.7 runs per game and are hitting just .236 as a team. This was a team many picked to win the World Series.
The Toronto Blue Jays (8-13, $-771) were one of the favorites to win the American League. They are off to a terrible start and SS Jose Reyes (ankle) is on the 60-day disabled list. Injuries aren't the only issues as they are only averaging just 3.62 runs per game and hitting just .226. Their leading hitter is Melky Cabrera, who is only hitting .265.
The San Diego Padres (5-15, $-727) weren't expected to win the NL West, but this is as bad a start as you can have. When you can't pitch or hit, it's tough to win. The Padres have lost five straight going into Wednesday. Their leader in home runs is Yonder Alonso with a lowly two dingers. They average just 3.35 runs per game and hit .243 as a team, while producing an ERA of 4.70.
