MLB Odds and Picks -- Dodgers favored over Pirates
By: The Linemakers

We have been on an incredible 14-1 baseball run since opening day that has netted a +1470 return, thanks largely in our ability to identify a few pitchers who came out of spring training hot or cold. We have also stayed true to our theory of not laying over -140, while finding most of our value with the underdogs and a couple of totals.

When scanning through Saturday’s card, we don’t have much that fits our criteria. We loved the way the Braves’ Julio Teheran pitched in spring where he struck out 35 batters in 26 innings while allowing a minuscule .082 batting average, but he‘s out of our price range against the Cubs today at -155, which is still probably too low.

We also could side with the streaking Orioles bats against the Twins Vance Worley, but there isn’t enough confidence in O’s starter Chris Tillman. But really, who needs pitching when you’ve got Chris Davis mashing home runs in four straight games. The Orioles top MLB thus far with 29 runs scored in four games and are second behind the Rockies (.327) in team batting average at .320.

Despite the great hitting numbers, this game is still about pitching, and pitching should always be the focal point behind a wager.

The top pitcher going today is the Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw against the Pirates and A.J. Burnett. Kershaw may be a over-priced today at -240, but it’s a hard sell taking the Bucs -- as much as we’d like to -- who have scored a major league low 5 runs and .127 average in four games.

However, the Dodgers aren’t exactly mashing the ball, either, which makes taking the hard long at the Prates reasonable. The Dodgers have scored only 10 runs while hitting .190. Big boppers Matt Kemp and Adrian Gonzalez have collected just four hits combined in 27 at-bats.

Although today’s total is an extremely low number at six runs, it’s hard to imagine these two teams going OVER. Burnett is capable of giving up big innings, but in his 3-0 home loss to the Cubs on opening day he struck out 10 batters.

Last April the Pirates were in the same situation where they traveled to Los Angeles and scored only three runs combined while getting swept in the three game series. All three of the games stayed UNDER the total. The air above Chavez Ravine won’t help either of these teams’ bats, as well hit balls routinely die for easy outs into the awaiting gloves of outfielders when night falls.

Of all the games we’ve given over the last week, this might be our least favorite. But rather than say nothing looks good, the best of the bunch today looks to be the Dodgers and Pirates UNDER six runs tonight.

Saturday Play:

Dodgers/Pirates UNDER 6 (-110)

Season to date record: 14-1 (+1470)
