Re: NHL Betting News and Notes Saturday, March 2

Saturday's NHL Betting Notes
By Covers.com

Check out our betting notes on all nine NHL games on tap Saturday:

Ottawa Senators at Philadelphia Flyers (-164, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Ben Bishop (OTT), Ilya Bryzgalov (PHI)

The Senators have earned at least a point in six straight games but have not scored more than three goals in any of their last 11 contests. Ottawa ranks second in the NHL in goals against, surrendering an average of 1.8, and is killing off 88.5 percent of its penalties. Philadelphia is one of the top scoring teams in the NHL but has not always been able to make up for the shortcomings of its own defense. The Flyers have been slightly better in that regard over the last three games, as they have gone 10-for-10 on the penalty kill. The under is 5-1 in the Senators’ last six road games.

Tampa Bay Lightning at Boston Bruins (-181, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Mathieu Garon (TB), Anton Khudobin (BOS)

The Bruins are rolling along as they enter with five straight victories, including a 4-2 triumph at Tampa Bay on Feb. 21. Boston was 8-1-1 in February, allowing a total of 16 goals. The Lightning have slowly tumbled down the Eastern Conference standings following a red-hot start and are under .500 for the first time this season. Tampa Bay has only three wins in its last 13 games, but is 6-1 in its last seven Saturday contests.

New Jersey Devils at Buffalo Sabres (-102, 5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Johan Hedberg (NJ), Ryan Miller (BUF)

Losers of three in a row and five of six, the Devils look to reverse their fortunes when they visit the Buffalo Sabres. New Jersey has scored just nine times during the six-game skid. The Sabres have posted back-to-back victories for the first time since early February and the under is 4-1 in Buffalo’s last five games overall.

Washington Capitals at Winnipeg Jets (-133, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Braden Holtby (WSH), Ondrej Pavelec (WPG)

Captain Andrew Ladd has carried the Winnipeg Jets to five wins in their last six games with five goals and eight points in that span. Washington lost 4-2 at home to Winnipeg on Jan. 22 and is 2-6-1 on the road this season. The Capitals are third in the league on the power play (27.3 percent) but are having trouble scoring 5-on-5, with only seven even-strength goals in their last five games. The under is 6-0 in the Jets’ last six home games.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Montreal Canadiens (-113, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Marc-Andre Fleury (PIT), Carey Price (MTL)

The Montreal Canadiens have points in nine straight games since losing 6-0 to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Feb. 9. Through 16 starts, Carey Price has a sparkling 1.90 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage. Pittsburgh is hoping to conclude its three-game road trip on a positive note after dropping the first two contests to Florida and Carolina. Penguins superstar Evgeni Malkin remains out indefinitely with a concussion. Pittsburgh is 9-2 in its last 11 Saturday games.

Florida Panthers at Carolina Hurricanes (-155, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Jose Theodore (FLA), Cam Ward (CAR)

The Hurricanes have been outscored by a 21-7 margin en route to dropping all five of their divisional games in regulation. Florida, which secured a 5-1 season-opening triumph over the Hurricanes on Jan. 19, suffered its eighth setback in 10 outings with a 4-3 shootout loss to Buffalo on Thursday. The Hurricanes have dropped six of their last seven meetings with the Panthers.

Anaheim Ducks at Phoenix Coyotes (-114, 5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Viktor Fasth (ANA), Mike Smith (PHX)

These teams are going to be sick of each other in a week from now, as they square off three times over the next five days. The clubs battle at Jobing.com Arena again on Monday before heading to Anaheim to conclude the series on Wednesday. The Coyotes have lost in regulation only twice in their last eight home contests (5-2-1). The Ducks are 5-0 in their last five Saturday games.

Los Angeles Kings at Vancouver Canucks (-125, 5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Jonathan Quick (LAK), Cory Schneider (VAN)

The Los Angeles Kings have recovered from their Stanley Cup hangover, winning each of their last five games and seven of eight. The Canucks have allowed 12 goals in consecutive losses. Roberto Luongo allowed eight goals in a loss to Detroit on Sunday and Cory Schneider yielded three in a 4-2 loss to Phoenix two days later. Vancouver won 3-2 in a shootout at Los Angeles on Jan. 28 and the under is 3-0-1 in the last four meetings.

Nashville Predators at San Jose Sharks (-140, 5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Pekka Rinne (NSH), Antti Niemi (SJ)

The Nashville Predators continue their trip through California on Saturday when they take on the struggling San Jose Sharks. Nashville began its trek with a 5-1 loss to the Ducks in Anaheim on Wednesday. It was the third loss in four games for the Predators, who have scored a total of one goal in the setbacks. Nashville won each of its first two meetings with the Sharks this season, posting a shootout win in San Jose on Feb. 2 and an overtime triumph at home 10 days later. The Predators are 4-5-2 on the road this season but 0-3-1 in their last four away from home.

Ducks at Coyotes Preview
Sportspic.com

The condensed schedule has created some extremely strange situations for many NHL teams. The betting sites notice that the Anaheim Ducks travel to Phoenix to play the Coyotes twice in the span of three days. The first game takes place on Saturday evening and promises to be very interesting. Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith has yet to look like he is comfortable in the nets and that has put the Coyotes in a very bad spot. Smith hopes that he can start to work out his problems at home against quality competition like the Anaheim Ducks.

The online betting experts cannot believe how good the Anaheim Ducks are playing this season. The Ducks has only lost three games in regulation all season and it has done this while breaking in a new goaltender. Jonas Hiller's injury problems became too much for Anaheim, so the team has handed the top goaltending spot to Viktor Fasth, and why not? In 10 games played, Fasth has an 8-1-0 record and is rapidly establishing himself as one of the best young goalies in the league. Hiller's days in Anaheim may be numbered, but the Ducks still has plenty of exciting moments to look forward to.

Phoenix Coyotes

It looks like Mike Smith is finally getting his legs under him and the timing is just right. The sports book experts have noticed that this condensed season has bunched teams up in the standings and Phoenix is still in the thick of the playoff hunt in the Western Conference. The Coyotes does not seem to have the goal scoring punch it had last season, but the whole team seems to just be catching up to the new schedule. This game will be a good test to see where Phoenix is at this point in the season.

Anaheim Ducks

The Ducks can score goals and play defense as well as rely on a strong goaltender. The 5dimes betting experts think that this Anaheim team could be a team to contend with when the playoffs roll around. For now, Anaheim is trying to work on maintaining its strong road record, which currently stands at 7-2-1. The Ducks does not seem as willing to open up its game on the road, which could be a good thing for the young goaltender. But as Anaheim gains more confidence in Fasth, the players may start to press the issue in the other end of the ice more often.

The Bottom Line

This will be a fast-paced game with a lot of good checking in it. This should also be a pretty good clinic on how to play goal in the NHL. The Ducks is riding a wave of momentum that seems to be able to push it past just about any team it plays. Phoenix will play a strong game, but it will not be enough to down the Ducks.

Pick: Anaheim Ducks
