College Basketball Betting Preview
By: Larry Hartstein

If you’re tired of seeing top 10 teams play the likes of Central Michigan, American, Alcorn State and Chicago State – as they did Saturday – we're right there with you. Fortunately, conference play gets underway in earnest Monday. Here’s a look at three of the biggest matchups:

No. 8 Cincinnati (12-1 SU, 5-4 ATS) at No. 24 Pittsburgh (12-1 SU, 3-3 ATS), noon ET, ESPN2

Line:
Pittsburgh -6

Remember when Pitt started 11-2 last season only to lose its first seven Big East games? Well, the Panthers are 12-1 now and lost to their only big-time opponent, Michigan. But there are indications Pittsburgh is more than a paper tiger this season. The Panthers lead the nation in offensive efficiency (Cincy is 50th). With James Robinson (5.3 assist-to-turnover ratio) and a healthy Tray Woodall (11.7 ppg, 5.8 apg), they lead the nation in assists (19.6) and rank fourth in shooting percentage (51.8). The Bearcats hold opponents to 34.9 percent shooting and are 8-4 in their last 12 games against ranked teams. They’ve had four days to stew on their one-point loss to New Mexico.

Trends:

Cincinnati is 6-1 ATS in its last seven road games.

Cincinnati is 6-1 ATS in its last seven Big East games.

Pittsburgh is 1-4 ATS in its last five home games vs. teams with winning road records.

Pittsburgh is 2-5 ATS in its last seven games following a SU win.

Under is 5-0 in Cincinnati’s last five games.

Over is 7-1 in Pittsburgh’s last eight games.

No. 19 Michigan State (11-2 SU, 3-7 ATS) at No. 11 Minnesota (12-1 SU, 7-4 ATS), 2 p.m. ET, ESPN2

Line:
Minnesota -6.5

This should be one of the season’s most physical games. Both teams are loaded with size and strength and great rebounders. The Golden Gophers lead the nation in offensive rebounding, grabbing nearly 50 percent of their misses. Each team sports a plus-10.2 rebounding margin. The Gophers are on a 14-5-1 ATS tear dating to last season, but coach Tubby Smith is 3-15 all-time against Michigan State. The last five times these teams have met when both have been ranked, the Spartans won.

Trends:

Michigan State is 9-3 ATS in its last 12 Big Ten games.

Michigan State is 1-5 ATS in its last six road games.

Minnesota is 14-5-1 ATS in its last 20 games.

Minnesota is 4-0 ATS in its last four Big Ten games.

Under is 5-1 in Michigan State’s last six road games.

Under is 17-5 in the last 22 meetings.

No. 5 Indiana (12-1 SU, 8-3 ATS) at Iowa (11-2, 6-3 ATS), 4 p.m. ET, ESPN2

Line:
Indiana -7

The Hawkeyes have won the last four meetings in Iowa City. And this will be a frenzied, sold-out atmosphere. Long-suffering fans believe that in coach Fran McCaffery’s third year, they have a team capable of making the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006. The Hoosiers – who lead the nation in scoring (89.4) and rank third in shooting percentage (52.0) and fourth in 3-point percentage (42.1) – have played with a vengeance since their Dec. 15 home loss to Butler. With Indiana’s array of shooters, the Hawkeyes cannot afford to collapse on Cody Zeller? If they don’t, the All-American should have his way with Iowa freshman center Adam Woodbury.

Trends:

Iowa is 5-0 ATS in its last five games.

Iowa is 20-8 ATS in its last 28 home games.

Indiana is 4-9 ATS in its last 13 road games.

Indiana is 2-7 ATS in its last nine road games following three or more consecutive home games.

Over is 10-1 in Indiana’s last 11 games vs. winning teams.

Over is 6-1 in last seven meetings in Iowa City.
