NBA: Streaks, Trends, Notes

Los Angeles Clippers at San Antonio Spurs

Opening the campaign 7-2 SU/ATS shooting a league-best 49.5% from the field while scoring an NBA second-best 102.6 points/game the Los Angeles Clippers are for real. Five of the Clippers' seven wins have come against teams that were in the playoffs last season, including world champion Miami Heat. The Clips take the show on the road this week starting with a visit to San Antonio. Clippers' not only have a demanding venue to conquer on Monday but they'll be facing an angry Spurs team that was dismantled 106-84 in L.A. on November 7th. Tough going against a Spurs' team ridding a smart 40-of-45 (33-9-3 ATS) stretch at the AT&T Center in San Antonio and one having won 19-of-20 (12-7-1 ATS) meetings as host in the series. Spurs 28-12-2 ATS vs Pacific foes have been opened 5.5-point favorite vs a Clip team 6-16 (7-14 ATS) away vs the Southwest division.

Clippers at Spurs: What Bettors Need to Know

Los Angeles Clippers at San Antonio Spurs (-4, 198.5)

Winners of five in a row, the Los Angeles Clippers will look to defeat the San Antonio Spurs for the second time this season when two of the top teams in the Western Conference meet in the Lone Star State on Monday. The Clippers exacted a small measure of revenge after being bounced by the Spurs in last season's playoffs by cruising to a 106-84 triumph on Nov. 7. Blake Griffin has fueled Los Angeles during its current streak, highlighted by his season-high 26-point effort in a 101-80 win over Chicago on Saturday.

The Clippers, who are starting a four-game road trip, haven't fared well when they visit San Antonio. After all, Gregg Popovich's club has won 28 of the last 30 such meetings. Manu Ginobili scored a game-high 20 points as the Spurs drilled 16-of-27 attempts from 3-point range in their 126-100 victory over Denver on Saturday.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (7-2, 7-2 ATS): Although Los Angeles boasts the top-scoring offense in the West, its defense isn't too shabby either. The Clippers held the Bulls to just 33.7 percent from the field to cruise to victory. "We're better defensively, but we could be a lot better," Griffin said. "I think that's the reason for the wins. We said that early on, play defense, the scoring's going to come."

ABOUT THE SPURS (8-2, 6-3-1 ATS): Ginobili snapped out of a shooting slump by drilling 5-of-7 from 3-point range. He was just 4-for-24 prior to the outing. San Antonio's lopsided victory on Saturday allowed veterans Tony Parker and Tim Duncan to keep their minutes in check. The additional rest should pay dividends against the high-octane Clippers, who have no issue raising the tempo in their games.

* Over is 10-2-2 in the last 14 meetings in San Antonio.
* Home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Clippers are 5-14 ATS in the last 19 meetings.
* Clippers are 2-7 ATS in the last nine meetings in San Antonio.

1. Los Angeles sits at 7-2 for the second time in franchise history. The 2005-06 Clippers won their first nine games before dropping their third contest.

2. Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard will be a spectator on Monday as he deals with quadriceps tendinitis above his left knee. He will be sidelined for at least 10-14 days.

3. Los Angeles guard Jamal Crawford is averaging 20.7 points, which is a significant leap from his career mark (15.3).

NBA Odds, Picks and Trends: Monday, Nov. 19, 2012
By: The Linemakers

We’ve got seven games in the NBA Monday night, two of them excellent matchups featuring red-hot teams. The Memphis Grizzlies (8-1) are 7-point favorites at home against the Denver Nuggets (4-6), and the San Antonio Spurs (8-2) are 4-point home favorites welcoming the Los Angeles Clippers (7-2).

No one is hotter than the Grizzlies (No. 1 in Sporting News’ NBA power rankings this week), who have won and covered eight straight games. But the Clippers come close, as they ride in on a five-game win streak. The Clippers gave the Grizzlies their only loss in the season opener.

Along the way, the Grizzlies have flexed their muscles against a couple of the elite teams in the league, beating the Heat by 18 last week and then bouncing the Thunder two nights later by 10 in OKC. They also gave the surging Knicks their only loss of the season on Friday night.

The Grizzlies open a five-game home stand tonight, and the Nuggets, who are on a three-game losing streak, better beware. Memphis, spurred on by tenacious defensive play, forces 16.2 turnovers a game. But Memphis is doing everything right and might have the biggest home-court advantage in the league right now.

Memphis beat the Nuggets in all three meetings last season, but the combined margin of victory was only seven points. Under different circumstances, the Nuggets might be a play tonight, but the Grizzlies current situation makes them a team not to bet against.

The Clippers are playing in only their third road game of the season, and only their second outside of Los Angeles. They beat the Lakers at Staples Center — technically a "home" game for the Lakers — then won at Portland. Their current model for success has been getting great play off the bench, with Jamal Crawford averaging over 20 points a game and playing solid defense.

They’ve won and covered their past five games, four of those games staying UNDER the total. Tonight’s total is a high 199, and we recommend siding with the UNDER here.

NBA trends:

The Pacers have won seven of their past eight meetings with the Wizards, covering four of them. Indiana is a 2.5-point favorite in Washington Monday night.

Four of the past six meetings between the Bobcats and Bucks have stayed OVER the total. The total is 198 for tonight’s game in Charlotte.

The Hawks have covered 12 of their past 13 games against the Magic, with 11 of the games staying UNDER the total. Atlanta is a 10.5-point home favorite, and the total is 187.

Five of the past six games between the Rockets and Jazz have stayed UNDER the total. The number is 196.5 tonight in Utah.

NBA injuries:

Magic guard J.J. Redick (flu) is questionable tonight.
