Game of the Day: Los Angeles Clippers at Los Angeles Lakers

Los Angeles Clippers at Los Angeles Lakers (-5.5, 190)

Long overshadowed by the success of the Lakers, the Clippers look like the stronger team heading into the first head-to-head meeting between the NBA's two Los Angeles franchises Friday night at Staples Center.  The Clippers had six players score in double digits during an impressive 101-92 win over Memphis in their mutual season opener on Wednesday.

The Lakers made the biggest splash of any NBA team this offseason, adding Steve Nash and Dwight Howard, but it has yet to generate any successful results. Coach Mike Brown's team is off to an 0-2 start and has lost 12 straight overall. That slide began with two losses to the Thunder while being eliminated from the NBA playoffs and continued with an 0-8 record in the preseason. The Lakers committed 24 turnovers in Wednesday's 116-106 loss at Portland, with Kobe Bryant responsible for seven of those miscues.

Former NBA Sixth Man of the Year Jamal Crawford made a splash with the Clippers by pouring in 29 points, the most in team history by a players making his debut off the bench. He keyed a 49-point outburst by a contingent of reserves that will get even deeper when veterans Chauncey Billups and Grant Hill return from their injuries. The Clippers trailed Memphis 77-73 going into the fourth quarter before rallying for the home win.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (0-2, 0-2 ATS): Playing on back-to-back nights for the first time since March 18 and 19, new Lakers center Dwight Howard went for 33 points and 14 rebounds. He's also attempted 33 free throws already this season, easily a league high. Nash is listed as doubtful for this game due to a lower-leg bruise suffered Wednesday at Portland that limited him to 16 minutes of playing time. Steve Blake would start if Nash can't go.

* Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings in Los Angeles.
* Over is 5-0 in the last five meetings.
* Home team is 8-2 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
* Clippers are 9-4 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
* Underdog is 9-4 ATS in the last 13 meetings.

1. Both teams are based out of the Staples Center, but recent history in this city series favors the designated home team. In fact, the Lakers have won the past nine times they were the home team against the Clippers.

2. Matt Barnes, who signed with the Clippers this offseason after two seasons with the Lakers, should be available for the game. The NBA suspended Barnes for the season opener after he pleaded no-contest to a misdemeanor charge for resisting, delaying or obstructing a police officer.

3. Bryant heads into this game on the cusp of tying Magic Johnson's franchise record of 1,724 steals. Bryant needs one steal to tie and two to claim the outright record.
