Free Picks: Service Plays for Wednesday October, 31

Gave you Miami last night as a freebie.

Your Wednesday freebie is the Clippers as the home favorite over the Grizzlies.

These teams met in the opening round of the playoff last season, as the Clippers won a 7th game on Memphis' home floor to advance in the West.

Obviously revenge is on the Grizzlies mind, but I don't think it will happen in the City of Angels, as the Clippers shored up their roster with the additions of Jamal Crawford, Lamar Odom, Grant Hill, and Matt Barnes in the off-season. Hill and Barnes will miss this one, but the Clips have enough to stave off the Grizzlies in this meeting tonight.

Los Angeles is 3-1-1 the past five series meetings at home against Memphis. I am sure many will take the points with the Grizzlies, as it is tempting considering how close their seven game set was last spring, but my money will go on the Clippers to get the new season off with the home win and cover.

Clippers by seven tonight at the Staples Center.

On a 7-4 run with all my freebies in football, baseball and now basketball, I'm looking to make it 8 of 12 with a play on the Utah Jazz against the Dallas Mavericks in tonight's showdown in Salt Lake City.

The last time the Jazz were playing basketball, they were being swept by then-top-seeded San Antonio in the first round of the playoffs. Four games to nil, and the Jazz began their summer vacation. This year they're hoping to get back in to the postseason, and they're looking to do it with arguably the best group of big men in the NBA. I like what coach Tyrone Corbin has done during the offseason, making a stringent effort to bring in better perimeter shooters and a point guard who can push the tempo and run the offense.

Obvisouly, when you have a revamped lineup, you're going to need time to develop chemistry and consistency - especially when trying to compete in the highly competitive Western Conference. But in this the season-opener, and it being at home, I like my chances against a Dallas team that I think will be hungover after last night's upset win over the Los Angeles Lakers.

All due respect, but the Mavs were probably shocked they won that game. And after running up and down the court in L.A. last night, you now have to come to Salt Lake and battle in a thin-aired city where the home team is going to make things rough.

As I said, the Jazz are stellar in the paint. And with the Mavs missing Dirk Nowitzki, it'll be tough for them to duplicate last night's feat. Take the home team here.

Gave you a winner on the Cleveland Cavaliers last night, now 42-29 with my comp play winners.

Tonight I will go with the Spurs as the road favorite over the Hornets.

New Orleans debut for #1 draft pick Anthony Davis, and hopes are high in the Big Easy, but before things get easy for the Hornets, they are going to take their lumps as they grow with each other.

Tonight is one of those spots, as San Antonio can go pretty deep in their rotation even without Manu Ginobili expected to miss tonight's contest.

The Spurs have won four in a row versus the Hornets and eight of the last ten overall, and while San Antone has usually been asked to cover some big numbers against the spread versus New Orleans, they have been up for the call getting the cover in six of the past ten meetings.

They are building something in the Crescent City, but like all good things it will take some time. Take the Spurs to get the road win and cover on opening night.
