These guys flat-out HATE each other. Boston with a bitter taste in their mouth after blowing a 3-2 lead in last years playoffs. Add in the fact that they will really want to stick it to the Heat and their former player Ray Allen. Celts added the better depth with Jason Terry, Courtney Lee and Leandro Barbosa in my eyes.

Washington and Cleveland finished in the bottom three in the East with 20-46 and 21-45 records respectfully. Washington finished the season winning their final six games and eight of 10 as they finished strong, but the main question is can they pick up from that point and start the season strong. Last season they started poorly losing their first eight games and 16 of their first 20. Cleveland had a rough ending to their season losing their final four games and eight of 10. Cleveland started decently, but hit a rough patch in the middle of the season that send them into a tail spin and couldn't recover. Look for Cleveland to win on opening night with support of the home crowd as Kyrie Irving to follow up his rookie season with an even better sophomore season as he increases his points per game over 20. Play Cleveland

Washington's starting five of A.J. Price, Bradley Beal, Trevor Ariza, Emeka Okafor and Trevor Booker has to rank as one of the most obscure opening-day lineups in NBA history. The top reserves are Jan Vesely, Chris Singleton and Jordan Crawford.

But these guys give the Wizards what they've lacked in previous years - intensity, full effort and unselfishness. Gone is the lingering stench left from the Gilbert Arena period. Underachievers and head cases JaVale McGee, Andray Blatche and Nick Young have moved on.

Chemistry and morale are up in Washington. The Wizards are going to be undervalued minus injured John Wall and Nene, their two most talented players. This opening game is a good example. The teams met less than three weeks ago during a preseason game in Cleveland. The Cavaliers were healthy. Their starters all logged more than 20 minutes. The Wizards were minus Wall, Nene, Okafor, Booker and Singleton. Yet Washington won, 99-95.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Both teams have plenty of youth. The Cavaliers are in new territory here being a mid-range favorite. The Cavaliers, though, are only in Year 3 of the post LeBron James era in what probably is going to be five-year rebuilding job. Cleveland has failed to cover in 15 of its last 20 home contests.

The Cavaliers' best player, point guard Kyrie Irving, had all four of his wisdom teeth extracted on Wednesday. He was bedridden until the weekend losing five pounds. He's likely to play, but he won't have all his strength and his minutes could be reduced.

Bottom Line: These two have played to the over in 3 straight and 5 of their last 6 meetings and have combined for at least 187 points in each of the 5. They have combined for over 200 points in the last 2 meetings. Also, the Mavs are an awesome 53-33 OVERS run in games when the total is between 180 and 189.5 points. We've seen an average of 190.4 total points scored in these games. Bet the OVER.

With Steve Nash, Dwight Howard, Chris Duhon and Antawn Jamison, the Lakers have a lot of new parts. It's going to take time for these new parts to jell. It is apparent the Lakers still have some kinks to work out as they went 0-8 in the preseason.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Dallas will have chemistry issues early on as well as it also has a lot of new faces, but I expect it to remain competitive in Nowitzki's absence. The Mavs brought in a lot of good players (Chris Kaman, Elton Brand, O.J. Mayo, Darren Collison, Dahntay Jones and Eddy Curry), not stars. I think it's tougher for star-studded teams to jell because each star must get used to fewer opportunities. The Mavs have a nucleus capable of playing good team basketball.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Dallas has either won or lost by 6 points or fewer in 7 of its last 8 meetings with the Lakers. Also, the Mavericks are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 road meetings in the series. Take the points.

The Key: Cleveland has the advantage at home tonight as Washington will be without starting point guard John Wall and top frontcourt scoring threat Nene. The Wizards have been a terrible investment on the road as they are just 29-45 ATS when playing away from home the past two seasons. They have lost these road contests by an average of 10.3 points. Lay the number.

Great matchup here to start the NBA season as the defending champion Heat host the Celtics. Normally we think of this matchup as a big defensive game. However, the preseason showed both of these clubs with some scoring. The Celtics were 3-5 in the preseason, averaging 95.6 ppg and allowing 93.1. The Heat were 4-4 in the preseason, scoring 94 ppg and allowing 92.4 ppg. The OVER has been a good play when these teams get together, evidenced by the 20-7 Over/Under mark in the last 27 meetings. In addition, the five of the last six meetings have gone OVER. Fairly low total here to start the season with a 184. We'll take a shot OVER to open the season.

Betting on the defending NBA champ in season openers has been hazardous. But this spot seems pretty inexpensive as I just don't see this Celtics team as anything more than mid-pack in the East. That gets me leaning Miami's way tonight. Heat minus the points.

SPORTS WAGERS

Washington +5 /+175 over CLEVELAND

We’re going to split this up and play a unit on both the money line and point-spread. For the Cavaliers, the post-LeBron era hasn't been much fun. Cleveland followed up its miserable 2010-11 campaign with 2011-12 being nearly as bad. There was a brief burst of competence early in the season before it all went south once Anderson Varejao was hurt. The Cavs were a bottom-five team in both offense and defense and were fortunate to win as many games as they did. The Cavs do have a star in the making in Kyle Irving, they had a very good draft and they have some high picks over the next two years. While the future is brighter, many of the same issues from last season remain.  As it stands, this is a team that does not defend well and we do want to be spotting points with them very often until that aspect of the game improves.

Washington was truly a joke last year. This year they’ll be competitive. They got rid of guys that weren’t progressing, they added some nice pieces in the off-season and as a result, they could actually make the playoffs. Defensively, the Wizards should be above the league average based on talent. Nene is a great pick-and-roll defender, Trevor Ariza is a solid wing stopper and Kevin Seraphin, John Wall, Chris Singleton and Emeka Okafor all are plus defenders. Nene, Okafor, Seraphin and Trevor Booker combine to form one of the league's better four-man units. Washington certainly has problems, most notably scoring and depth. However, they’re also an undervalued club based on last year’s results. We’ll take advantage while we can.

The Boston Celtics had the Miami Heat down three games to two last year in the Eastern Conference Finals, but wilted in the final two games. Miami then road that comeback win all the way to an NBA Championship. The era of the "Big 3" is now over in Boston. Unfortunately for them, one of those pieces, Ray Allen now wears a Heat uniform, and will only make the Heat more deadly in their attempt to repeat as champions. LeBron James appears to be focused, as he said over the summer he wants to be the best player of all time. The Celtics have brought in Courtney Lee, Barbosa, and Terry to bolster the bench, but Garnett, and Pierce are both aging stars with diminishing skills and minutes. This game should offer a lot of intensity at start the season, as it has developed into a huge rivalry. The home team is 15-7 ATS in their last 22 meetings and with the Championship banner being raised tonight, it should propel LeBron and company to play with fire. Play this one on Miami.

Dallas Mavericks vs. Los Angeles Lakers
Play: Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers are sure to enter this season with a chip on their shoulders after many wrote them off after being eliminated in the 2012 playoffs by Oklahoma City. The front office did a tremendous job of revitalizing the franchise in the offseason with the acquisitions of Dwight Howard, Antawn Jamison, Jodie Meeks, and Steve Nash. Dallas will be without their star tonight Dirk Nowitzki who will be sitting out with a knee injury. The Lakers have listed Kobe Bryant as questionable with a foot injury. It would be hard to imagine Bryant not being out there tonight in a season opener with a renewed passion after the commitment made by management to surround him with an improved supporting cast. Play on the Los Angeles Lakers minus the points.

Wizards / Cavs Under 189

Expect a low scoring opener here with 2 big time scorers out in this one for the Wiz (Wall and Nene), and both teams will spend much of the first quarter feeling things out...Like the Under here.  Might lean towards the Wizards too, the avergae margin of home winners in the NBA is 3.3 points over the last 10 years, and in a low scoring game, points are at a premium.

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Tuesday October, 30

Jack Jones

Cleveland Cavaliers -5.5

The Cleveland Cavaliers figure to be a much-improved team this season. The No. 1 pick in 2011, Kyrie Irving, is primed to make the All-Star team after a tremendous rookie season.

Center Anderson Varejao returns after missing the final 41 games last season with a fractured wrist. PF Tristan Thompson showed signs of brilliance as a rookie last year and will only be better in his second season. Rookies Dion Waiters and Tyler Zeller figure to earn big minutes right away. The signing of forward C.J. Miles adds some veteran leadership and a spark off the bench.

Washington is in rough shape entering the 2012-13 season. It has been dealt some huge blows in the injury department. 2010 No. 1 pick John Wall is expected to miss the first month of the season with a knee injury. Also, forwards Nene (plantar fascitis) and Kevin Seraphin (calf) will miss the opener. Wall and Nene are the Wizards' two best players. Bet the Cavaliers Tuesday.

Lakers -8

Forget the fact that Kobe Bryant may or may not play in this game. The Mavericks are in much worse shape even if Bryant misses the opener. Dallas will be without their best player in Dirk Nowitzki and simply don't have the talent around him to make up for his loss. The Mavs will also be without a key role player in Delonte West and potentially starting center Chris Kaman.

Normally the Lakers would be a bad bet early in the season after making such huge offseason additions, but this is a game where they should dominate from the opening tip. One of the big concerns with Los Angeles is the bench, but with Dallas hurting and not exactly featuring a deep roster it shouldn't be a huge factor in this one. I really like the Lakers to easily win this game by double-digits at home.

Put your cleats away til Thursday boys...

Time to lace up the high-tops and take advantage of the NBA, and what it has to offer opening week. I love this week in the NBA. So many things going on, and so much information to soak up. Yet the oddsmakers never seem to get it, and won't be able to catch on until next week.

I looked at all three games, and this has to be the best game on the board.

I won't mess with the Lakers-Mavericks game, not with Kobe being a gametime decision, and the Mavs dealing with the absence of Dirk. There's no telling where that line should be.

With Cleveland-Washington, we have a pair of cellar scrapers and I'm not about to put my money on a pair of questionable teams that are loaded with youth, not to mention a Wizards team that is dinged up.

Instead, the Celtics/Heat game is poised to give us the best highlights of the night. And I love what I am seeing with this game, an easy winner to start the season.

Alright, let's take a look at the Cleveland Cavaliers and Washington Wizards as my first free pick of the NBA season.

I know the road team has won the last two meetings, but going back into the 2009 campaign, the home team has won six of the 10 battles, while the straight-up winner has covered nine of the last 10 meetings. And with Washington all banged up to start the season, I'd rather take my chances with a Cleveland team that appears ready to make a run at the postseason for the first time since the departure of LeBron James.

While John Wall won't be able to go for the Wizards in this season opener in Cleveland, the reigning rookie of the year - Kyrie Irving - is raring to go in this one. Irving, who averaged 18.5 points, 5.4 assists and 3.7 rebounds a year ago, has become the new face of a franchise that was tossed aside by James three years ago, but has new life.

The Cavs, who ranked 29th in the NBA in field-goal percentage (42.2) last season, are going to be a surprise to many with a flourish at the start of the season. Whether or not it can hang on in the second half of the campaign remains to be seen. I'll lay the points tonight.

After falling behind 3 games to 2 in the Eastern Conference playoffs last season, the Miami Heat turned on the after-burners and smoked the Boston Celtics in Games 6 and 7, winning by 19 and 13 points to move on toward their NBA title. Excuse me for noticing and stating the obvious, but the Heat could very well be better than they were last season.

I know the Celtics have covered seven of the last 10 meetings, but all things considered - Miami's revamped lineup and Boston's infusion of youth - I have to believe the defending NBA champions will be at their best for their season-opener and will be out to make a statement to the ever-talking Celtics who the best in the league is once again.

The home team has covered 15 of the last 22 meetings in this Eastern Conference brawl. And with the celebration of last year's title taking place before the game, the banner being raised and rings being handed out, it's really hard to ignore the cheap price the Heat are laying to Boston. I'll side with the champs.

Your Tuesday freebie is the Miami Heat as the home favorite over their nemesis the Boston Celtics.

This year's rivalry takes on a little added significance as former Celtic Ray Allen has jumped ship and joined Miami.

No doubt emotions will be high tonight as Allen faces his former teammates.

That being said, I will go with the defending champions to not only raise their championship banner, but to pull away for the win and the cover over a Boston team they eliminated in the Eastern Conference Finals in convincing fashion in Game Seven last June, 101-88 in a game that wasn't even as close as the final score indicated.

The home team in this series is a solid 15-7 against the spread, and with Miami having a full training camp this season, look for there to be no excuses about "team chemistry" to fall back on.

No love lost between the teams, and obviously a long, long way to go before this year's champion is crowned, but for tonight no one is raining on Miami's parade.

Take the Heat as the home chalk.

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Tuesday October, 30

Chris Jordan

My complimentary winner for Tuesday night is going to be the revamped Los Angeles Lakers minus the points against the visiting Dallas Mavericks.

Here we have one of the most heated rivalries in the NBA, and unfortunately for the Mavericks, they'll go into this one without Dirk Nowitzki. As for the Lakers, don't you dare think for a minute Kobe Bryant won't play, that's ludicrous. This is a guy who has played with more broken limbs than we can probably count on one hand, and you think he's going to miss the season opener? At home?

Okay, let's say he does...

How about the new faces in town and how this team is still better than the Nowitzki-less Mavericks?

Los Angeles went 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS in all four regular-season meetings last season, and that was against the defending champion Mavericks at the time. And that was with last year's version of the Purple and Gold, a team that bounced from the second round of the playoffs by eventual West champion, Oklahoma City.

With Bryant, Pau Gasol, Steve Nash, Dwight Howard and Metta World Peace, the Lakers now have one of the most formidable starting lineups in the entire league, and I'd like to think this is a team that'll be out to make a statement tonight.

It shouldn't be too hard, either.

Forget for a moment Nowitzki will miss at least the first 10 games after arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, but the Mavericks are going to need time to adjust with eight newcomers on the roster. Gone are point guard Delonte West, who was waived on Monday because he just can't seem to control his behavior, and Jason Terry, who headed to Boston in free agency.

Dallas is in trouble this first month, mark my words. Lay the points with L.A.

For Tuesday, go with the Cavaliers at home over the banged up Wizards.

Washington enters the season with starting point guard John Wall on the shelf for the first month of the season with a knee injury. The Wizards are also sans Nene who is dealing with plantar fasciitis , and Kevin Seraphin who has a strained calf.

Just a little too short-handed for my liking tonight, and while Cleveland is still not a very good team, they do come into this one with Kyrie Irving healthy and will also welcome the return of big man Anderson Varejao.

The Cavs added both Dion Waiters and Tyler Zeller via the draft, and added power forward C.J. Miles as well. While they will not be scaring the likes of Boston or Miami, they will have enough firepower to get by the injury-thinned Washington Wizards tonight.

Opening night win and cover for Cleveland is in the cards.
