CFL Betting Notes - Week 14
By David Schwab
VegasInsider.com

The results from Week 13 in the CFL are in and both Montreal in the East and British Columbia in the West have finally created some breathing room with a two-game lead in each of their divisions. The Alouettes knocked off Toronto 31-10 this past Sunday as 3½-point favorites at home and the Lions snuck past Edmonton 19-18 as 3½-point road favorites in Saturday's only game.

Winnipeg started the week off with a 34-12 victory over Hamilton as a four-point underdog at home on Friday night and Saskatchewan closed things out on Sunday in a 30-25 shootout over Calgary as a one-point home underdog.

The following is brief preview of Week 14 in the CFL along with the opening point spread and 'over/under' lines as provided by 5Dimes.

Friday, Sept. 28

Montreal Alouettes (-1) vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats Total: 58

Montreal is now 8-4 straight up (6-6 against the spread) overall but just 2-3 both SU and ATS in five road games this season. The total has stayed UNDER in three of its last five games. Hamilton has now lost seven of its last eight games SU and is 2-6 ATS. It is 4-8 SU (6-6 ATS) overall and 3-3 SU and ATS at home. The total has gone OVER in four of its last six games.

These two have split the first two games this season with each winning at home SU and the Tiger Cats going 2-0 ATS. They beat Montreal 39-24 as 2 1/2-point home favorites in late July and covered as four-point road underdogs in a 31-29 loss to the Alouettes on Aug. 23. Hamilton is now 7-1 ATS in the last eight meetings with the total going OVER in four of the last seven games.

Saturday, Sept.29

Edmonton Eskimos vs. Calgary Stampeders OFF Total: OFF

The Eskimos are clinging to the final playoff spot as a crossover team from the West at 5-7 SU (7-5 ATS). They are 2-4 SU (3-3 ATS) on the road this season and the total has stayed UNDER in three of their last five games. Calgary's four-game winning streak was snapped last week to fall to 7-5 SU (6-6 ATS) and two games behind BC in the West. It is 4-2 SU at home but just 2-4 ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in six of its last eight games.

The Stampeders already beat Edmonton twice earlier this month SU in a home-and-home matchup but the series was split 1-1 ATS. Overall, Calgary has won seven of the last 10 meetings SU but the series is tied at 5-5 ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the last six games. The line on this game remains off pending the playing status of Calgary quarterback Kevin Glenn (leg).

Toronto Argonauts vs. Winnipeg Blue Bombers OFF Total: OFF

Toronto finds itself in desperate need of a win to stay in the East Division race after last week's loss. It is 6-6 both SU and ATS overall and 3-4 SU (4-3 ATS) on the road this season. Winnipeg snapped a four-game losing streak to keep its faint playoff hopes alive at 3-9 SU (6-6 ATS). It is 3-3 SU and a profitable 5-1 ATS at home this year. The total has stayed UNDER in four of its last five games.

The Argonauts won the first meeting this season 25-22 but could not cover as 8 ½-point favorites at home. They will most likely be without quarterback Ricky Ray, who is listed as doubtful with a knee injury, while the return of quarterback Buck Pierce to the Blue Bombers' lineup helped spark the team to a win.

Sunday, Sept.30

British Columbia (-3) vs. Saskatchewan Rough Riders Total: 48

The Lions have the best record in the CFL at 9-3 SU (5-7 ATS) and are in prime position to successfully defend last year's Grey Cup title. They are 4-2 SU (2-4 ATS) on the road this season and the total has gone OVER in three of its last four games. Saskatchewan is still very much in the playoff race at 6-6 SU and ATS. It is 4-2 both ways at home and the total has stayed UNDER in four of its last six games.

These two split the first two meetings this season both SU and ATS with the total staying UNDER in both games. BC has won five of the last seven meetings SU and is 5-1 ATS in the last six. The total has stayed UNDER in six of the last seven games.

Week 14 CFL Betting Preview
Covers.com

Montreal Alouettes at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (1, 58)

The Als have rattled off six wins in seven opportunities in order to assume the top spot in the East Division where they hold a four-point advantage over Toronto heading into play this week. Quarterback Anthony Calvillo has thrown for no less than 329 yards and has a total of 10 touchdowns over his last four games against the Tiger-Cats, but Montreal failed to covered in each of those contests.

Hamilton has only one victory in its last seven games and sits four games under .500 despite leading the league in scoring (30 points per game). Quarterback Henry Burris’ 27 TD passes are also tops in the league, but it hasn’t been enough because of a crumbling defense that ranks dead last in the CFL in preventing points (31.8 ppg).

Edmonton Eskimos at Calgary Stampeders (-4.5, 48.5)

The Edmonton Eskimos have serious injury concerns at quarterback. Both regular starter Steven Jyles and backup Kerry Joseph are dealing with injuries and have been inconsistent when healthy this season. Third-stringer Matt Nichols was awarded the majority of practice time at QB this week and could get the nod Friday.

Not only did the Stampeders have their four-game winning streak snapped by Saskatchewan last week, but RB Jon Cornish was fined by the league for “mooning” some Rider fans in the process. Calgary head coach John Hufnagel said he will also discipline Cornish, who has racked up 1,118 yards from scrimmage this season, for his outlandish behavior. Whether that action has any bearing on his playing time this week remains to be seen. The Stampeders are 1-4 ATS in their last five home games.

Toronto Argonauts at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (-3, 50.5)

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers try to record back-to-back wins for the first time this season when they welcome the Toronto Argonauts Saturday. The Bombers snapped a four-game slide last week with a 34-12 victory over Hamilton, but Winnipeg (3-9) is still in last place in the East with just six points.

Argonatus first-year head coach Scott Milanovich announced Jarious Jackson as his starting QB this weekend because of the injury suffered by first-stringer Ricky Ray against Montreal last week. Toronto is 4-1 ATS in its last five road games.

BC Lions at Saskatchewan Roughriders (2.5, 48)

The Lions try for a fourth straight win this weekend when they clash with the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium. QB Travis Lulay threw for 260 yards and a TD in last week’s win over Edmonton, which means he has tossed for at least one score in every game this season and 23 in a row dating back to last season.

Roughriders QB Darian Durant hasn’t enjoyed much success against BC in his career. The signal-caller hasn’t thrown a single TD pass and has been picked off five times over his last four matchups with the Lions, who are 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings with Saskatchewan. The under is 4-0 in the last four meetings between the clubs.
