5 Things You Need to Know in Sports

Want to start your day off right? Looking for some action and the most interesting events of the day? There is a light baseball schedule on Monday and the U.S. Open tennis tournament gets underway.  Here is a brief look at the top four important matchups of the day along with a glance at future odds.

1)LA Dodgers at Colorado, Josh Beckett (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Jeff Francis, (4-4, 5.79 ERA)

The LA Dodgers are now the West Coast version of the Boston Red Sox. Josh Beckett, who has having a sub-par season with the BoSox, starts his first game for the Dodgers. It's in the hitter-friendly confines of Coors Field. The Dodgers are 2-6 last 8 in Colorado. The Dodgers opened as a -175 favorite with a total of 10.

2)St. Louis at Pittsburgh, Kyle Lohse (13-2, 2.61 ERA) vs. A.J. Burnett (15-4, 3.63 ERA)

The Cards took two of three from National League Central leader Cincinnati. Now they head to Pittsburgh for a three-game set that might mean even more for their playoff hopes, as well as those of the Pirates. Kyle Lohse has been on form for the Cards, while the Pirates have lost five of six. They need Burnett to step up.. The OVER is 7-1-1 last 9 in series. St. Louis opened as a -125 favorite with a total of 8.

3)U.S. Open men's tournament starts

Flushing Meadow will be alive with first-round action on Monday. Novak Djokovic is the men's favorite and Rafael Nadal pulled out with a knee injury. Mardy Fish is in action as one of America's top hopes (John Isner is the highest-seeded American). Another American, Donald Young (+1600) plays at night on Arthur Ashe Court. Unfortunately that will be against #2 seeded Roger Federer at 8pmET.

4)U. S. Open women's tournament starts

The women are action on Monday though heavy favorite Serena Williams and her older sister Venus play on Tuesday. Top-seeded Victoria Azarenka is in action on Monday afternoon, while Maria Sharapova and last year's champ Samantha Stosur, play on Monday morning. At night, Kim Clijsters (-5000) takes on Victoria Duval. This is her last tournament, as she's retiring after the tournament.
