5 Things You Need to Know in Sports
Want to start your day off right? Looking for some action and the most interesting events of the day? Baseball is on tap tonight with football returning on Thursday. Here is a brief look at the top four important matchups of the day along with a glance at future odds.
1)Texas at NY Yankees, Matt Harrison (13-6, 3.31 ERA) vs. Hiroki Kuroda (10-8, 3.24 ERA)
These two teams are fighting for the top spot in the American League. But the Yankees are stumbling some due to lack of pitching with their ace C.C. Sabathia on the shelf. Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz face a tough pitcher in Kuroda. Harrison is coming off a rough start at Fenway but should get back on form. Yankees are 7-16 Under last 23 Tuesday games. NY Yankees opened as a -150 favorite and the total was 9.
2)Boston at Baltimore, Josh Beckett (5-9, 4.97 ERA) vs. Wei-Yin Chen (10-7, 3.79 ERA)
At 57-59, Boston is gearing up to play the spoiler role. That's what the Orioles were last year when they spoiled the Red Sox's playoff hopes. Josh Beckett has been awful over the last month but at any time, he's capable of pitching a gem. Chen allowed just one run in 7 IP in his last start against Boston, but was roughed up by Kansas City in his last start. The series is 11-4-1 OVER last 16 meetings. Baltimore opened as a -119 favorite and the total is 8.5.
3)Arizona at St. Louis, Ian Kennedy (10-9, 4.34 ERA) vs. Joe Kelly (2-5, 3.47 ERA)
Arizona is 58-57, trying to hang in the wild card race in the National League. They are 6.5 games behind Atlanta and Pittsburgh (going into Monday night). St. Louis, at 62-53, is just 2.5 games behind the wild card teams. Joe Kelly has done a nice job with the Cardinals. His last start (5IP, 4 ER) was his worst in the last 10. St. Louis is 9-4 last 13 vs. Arizona at home. The Cards opened as -135 favorites and the total opened at 9.
4)NY Mets at Cincinnati, Chris Young (3-6, 4.87 ERA) vs. Mat Latos (10-3, 3.81)
The Reds are coming off a three-game winning streak, defeating the lowly Cubs. They send Mat Latos, one of their more reliable pitchers, to the mound against the Mets. The Mets are playing spoilers now as they are 16.5 games behind the Nats in the NL East before Monday's results. Chris Young goes to the mound for the Mets. The OVER is 8-3 last 11 in this series. Cincinnati opened as a -185 favorite and the total is 8.
5)Odds to win the 2012 World Series
Since we're all about baseball today, let's check the latest baseball futures. The Rangers are now the favorite according to 5dimes over the NY Yankees, who have faltered as of late. But the Washington Nationals are creeping up with the best record in baseball, as the third favorite.
