FORTH WORTH, TX (TheSpread) – This week the 2012 PGA Tour stays in Texas this week as golfers will compete in the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

According to oddsmakers, Matt Kuchar and Zach Johnson are the favorites to win this event, as each has 12/1 odds. Other short odds to win are Rickie Fowler (16/1) and Jason Dufner (18/1).

Johnson won this event in 2010 and set the course record in the process, as he shot a 21-under 259 to win. Johnson is 27th in the world rankings and he has finished second in two of his last three events.

Kuchar is fifth in the world rankings. He has finished in the top 15 in seven of his last eight events, which includes one win. Kuchar finished 16th in this event last year.

Fowler is 20th in the world rankings. He has finished in the top 2 in his last two events, including getting his first PGA win at the Wells Fargo Championship. Fowler finished tied for 16th in this event last year.

Dufner has been the hottest golfer on tour. He has won two of his last three tournaments to climb to 14th in the world rankings. He did miss the cut at last year’s Crowne Plaza Invitational.

The Crowne Plaza Invitational begins on Thursday, May 24 and will run through Sunday, May 27 from the Colonial Country Club Course in Forth Worth, Texas. For complete odds for each golfer to win the Crowne Plaza Invitational, see below.

Crown Plaza Invitational at Colonial Betting Preview
By Fairway Jay

I went to the archives to pull out an old Fairway PGA preview and modified some thoughts from the tee. Colonial Country Club is an old-fashioned layout measuring nearly 7,200 yards and a par 70.  Experience has always paid off along with solid shot-making and scrambling.  Many idiosyncrasies to learn and understand about the golf course, as the wind, tree-lined doglegs and fairly narrow fairways put a premium on accuracy over power. Patience is a pre-requisite and solid ball strikers (combination driving distance and accuracy with GIR) come to the forefront. Players with a solid short game strategy and scrambling ability are your best bets.

Holes 3-4-5 referred to as the “Horrible Horseshoe” are the toughest stretch with the navigation of the Trinity River on hole no. 5 making it the most difficult hole on the course. Other tough scoring holes to watch are no. 4, 9 and 14. “Hogan’s Alley” is steep in tradition and the great Ben Hogan once noted that, "A straight ball will get you in more trouble at Colonial than any other course I know."

Ben Crane over Carl Pettersson at a plus price is one play of interest this week. Crane has had some success at Colonial with three top-5s the past six years. He ranks top-16 in a number of categories of interest including all-around ranking, strokes gained putting, birdie average, and birdie or better conversion percentage (5th). He leads the Tour in average distance of putts made, and Crane’s accuracy and tee-to-green game is stronger than Pettersson’s. Crane has three top-10s this season and is also worth backing at a longer price. Pettersson lacks solid accuracy off the tee and his GIR stats are sub-par and he’ll struggle more this week if he’s not in the fairway consistently. In eight starts at Colonial, Pettersson has yet to finish top-20.

Crowne Plaza Invitational Preview
By Sportsbook.ag

Colonial is usually a kind course to the field, so expect a wild shootout again this week. Last year, David Toms held on for the win despite a third-round 74 thanks to back-to-back 62’s to start his week. With some wide-open approaches, it’s just a matter of who can convert the medium birdie putts that will be there all week.

Here’s a look at the best bets…

Zach Johnson (15/1): The 2010 champion hung around last year too, shooting four sub-70 rounds including Sunday’s 65 to take a solo fourth. Johnson has finished top-2 in two of his past three starts.

David Toms (25/1): The defending champ has made eight straight cuts at Colonial, and showed some guts last year in coming away with the victory. After two 62’s to open up the week he blew a big lead on Saturday, but came storming back with a 67 on Sunday to win it. In his last start, two weeks ago at The Players, his final-round 65 put him at T10.

Charlie Wi (60/1): He lost a seesaw battle to Toms last year but never really slipped up, shooting four sub-70 rounds and finishing just one stroke off the lead. Wi was T25 at The Players two weeks ago, and a month ago went T4 at the Texas Open.

Bill Haas (30/1): Haas has fared very well in two career starts at Colonial, going T13 in 2010 and T8 last year.

Hunter Mahan (25/1): After some struggles at Colonial over the years, Mahan had an impressive week a year ago, shooting 70 or better in every round and posting a T10. He has cooled off a bit of late though, following his win in Houston with a T12 at the Masters, a T53 at the Wells Fargo and a missed cut at The Players.
