2012 Boxing Free Pick: Floyd Mayweather Jr. -800 vs. Miguel Cotto

LAS VEGAS, NV (TheSpread) – Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Miguel Cotto meet up in the boxing ring tonight. Here is a breakdown of the fight and our free pick to win.

Mayweather Jr. (42-0-0) takes on Cotto (37-2-0) from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The fight will air live on HBO PPV. Here is a look at both fighters.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26 KO’s)

Strengths:
Mayweather is unbeaten for a reason. He is fast and has good power for a smaller fighter. Mayweather tends to use his speed to counter opponents. Mayweather also has good conditioning, which allows him to keep the same pace from round 1 to round 12.

Weaknesses: Mayweather does tend to be a little passive. Opponents have tried to get him out of his counter role at times, but he refuses to buy in. That can sometimes lead to boring fights. Mayweather also won’t be able to match one-punch power with Cotto, which could leave him open to a knockdown if he gets careless.

Miguel Cotto (37-2-0, 30 KO’s)

Strengths:
Cotto will have the size and strength edge on Mayweather, as Mayweather will not be adding on any weight to his 151-pound weigh-in frame, while Cotto weighed in right at 154 pounds, and will probably be even bigger once the fight begins. Cotto also has the knockout power that Mayweather hasn’t quite shown. Cotto has only went the distance in nine fights in his career.

Weaknesses: Cotto has lost to lesser fighters than Mayweather, and he has had both of his losses come by KO. Sometimes being the bigger fighter can be a weakness, as he is likely to fatigue easier. That could play into Mayweather’s hands as the fight prolongs. Cotto will need to pace himself if he hopes to avoid being overwhelmed at the end of the fight.

Who to pick: Cotto is an interesting opponent for Mayweather and if you are betting, certainly the appeal of a +550 money line is a little greater than Mayweather’s -800 odds. But, there is a reason the odds are what they are and there is a reason Mayweather has never lost. I suspect more of the same stuff from Floyd, as he will counter box his way to a decision win over Cotto.  BOXING FREE PICK: Floyd Mayweather Jr. -800
