Hockey Today

SCOREBOARD

Tuesday, Dec. 2

Atlanta at Montreal (7:30 p.m. EST). The Canadiens opened their seven-game homestand—the longest in the franchise’s 100 years—with a 3-2 victory over Buffalo. The Thrashers have lost six of their last seven games.

STARS

Monday

— Pekka Rinne, Predators, made 30 saves for his first career shutout as Nashville beat Buffalo 2-0.

— Paul Stastny, Avalanche, had two goals and an assist, and low-scoring Colorado broke out for a 6-5 win over Minnesota.

— Matt Stajan and Mikhail Grabovski, Maple Leafs, scored power-play goals less than 1 1/2 minutes apart early in the third period, leading Toronto to a 3-1 victory over Los Angeles.

COMEBACK

Columbus’ 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Monday night was its first win this season after allowing the first goal of the game. The Blue Jackets, who entered 0-6-3 when the opponent scored first, became the last NHL team to win this season after falling behind 1-0.

INJURED

The Sabres played without captain Craig Rivet, who was scratched because of an upper body injury just hours before their 2-0 loss to Nashville. Rivet was hurt in Buffalo’s loss to Montreal on Saturday and is day-to-day.

NUMBERS

The Red Wings outshot the Ducks 47-16 in a 2-1 win. Anaheim goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 37 shots before being removed after two periods. … Wild center Eric Belanger returned from a lower body injury and skated in his 500th game, a 6-5 loss to Colorado. … The Kings were 0-for-4 on the power play in a 3-1 loss to Toronto, making them 3-for-34 with the advantage over their last eight games.

TWO IN A ROW

Toronto, coming off a 4-2 win against Philadelphia, has won consecutive games for the first time since beating New Jersey 6-5 and then the New York Rangers 5-2 on Nov. 1. The Maple Leafs beat Los Angeles 3-1 on Monday night.

SPEAKING

“Yeah, that’s funny. Two more seconds and we’re OK. But we got what we deserved.”—Wild coach Jacques Lemaire after Minnesota put the puck into its own net seconds after time expired in the third period of a 6-5 loss to the Avalanche.
