Tips and Trends

Cleveland Cavaliers at New Orleans Hornets

Cavs: Cleveland star LeBron James led the NBA in scoring last year but was held to 21 points on 40 percent shooting in two losses to New Orleans last season. James had the luxury of only playing 30 minutes in a 96-79 rout of Charlotte on Thursday, totaling 22 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. He was lucky enough to play 30 minutes or less only twice all of last season. "We had a lot of guys contribute and I got a lot of rest,” James said Thursday. “Coach believes in our roster and I believe in our roster. I don’t have to average 42 minutes like I have in the past because of our depth.”

Cavs are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
The UNDER is 15-6 in Cleveland's last 21 games overall.

Key Injuries - F Darnell Jackson (wrist) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 92

Hornets (-4.5, O/U 189): The most valuable signing of the offseason may have very well been James Posey, who could end up starting for Peja Stojakovic after winning a championship with the Celtics last year. Posey scored 13 points in Thursday's 108-95 win at Phoenix, and head coach Byron Scott is happy to have him on his side. “He’s like a few players in this league that can affect a game without scoring,” Scott said. “He’s going to take the charge, he’s going to guard the best players, he’s going to communicate at all times." Posey is also expected to play a key role defending Cleveland's James.

Home team is 11-4 ATS in the last 15 meetings.
Hornets are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games vs. Central Division.

Key Injuries - C Tyson Chandler (ankle) is doubtful.
F Peja Stojakovic (ankle) is doubtful.
F Julian Wright (ankle) is doubtful.

Saturday's NBA Card
By Josh Jacobs

It might be only a handful of days into the new NBA season, but Vegasinsider.com is already in full swing by breaking down the most viable of games. Saturday brings with it a plethora of hardwood action. Bettors get your card(s) ready because it’s time to build an early bank roll as the season begins to harbor some momentum.

It’s an East Coast Thing

The 76ers will leave their home town en route to Atlanta. The Hawks have been a solid option at the counter in this head-to-head pairing, going 4-1-1 ATS in the last five. Atlanta not only has home court advantage entering this contest but is also coming off an extended two days worth of rest. To open the season, the Hawks trampled over Orlando, 99-85. Atlanta’s Joe Johnson recorded 25 points while Josh Smith complemented the stat sheet with 17 points and 10 rebounds in the victory. One problem that the Hawks must address is Mike Bibby’s 0-for-6 performance from beyond the arc. Will this become a reoccurring theme for games to come?

In its first game of the year, Boston didn’t loose an ounce of the energy that propelled it to a Championship win last season. The Celtics trailed for most of Tuesday's contest against the Cavaliers, until Kevin Garnett and company shifted into overdrive. From the 1:52 mark in the third quarter, Cleveland found itself behind on the score board until the final buzzer rung to signal the end of the contest. Moving right along, the Celtics have dominated the Pacers at the window with an 8-0 ATS record in the last eight meetings in Indiana, while also rocking the books with a 10-1 ATS performance in the last 11 overall meetings. The Pacers are coming off a 100-94 opening season loss to Detroit. Danny Granger led Indiana with 33 points (11-of-14 from the charity stripe).

Dedicated Network

NBA TV will be airing a double-header beginning at 7:30 p.m. EDT with a tussle between Washington and Detroit. The Pistons haven’t faired well against the Wizards with a 4-6 SU and ATS record in the last 10 head-to-head meetings as evidence. However, Detroit is 7-3 ATS at home in the last 10 versus Washington. Total players, do your homework because a 6-2 record on the ‘under’ in the last eight head-to-head games has been a money maker. As far as rosters go, the Pistons remain relatively intact in terms of returning players. Forward Amir Johnson has been pedigreed since being selected in the second round of the 2005 draft by Detroit. Johnson’s first start of his career on Wednesday resulted in six points with three blocks in a total of 21 minutes of play.

Splitting its first two games, Phoenix will play its second game at home against the Greg Oden-less Trailblazers at 10:30 p.m. EDT. Oden found a way to the hospital when he awkwardly landed on his left foot. An MRI revealed a foot sprain and once again the highly touted center out of Ohio St. will take a seat on the bench for an extended period of time (estimated at four-to-six weeks). The Suns opened the season with a 103-98 victory over the Spurs. Even with San Antonio’s Tony Parker and Tim Duncan combining for 64 points, Phoenix was able to move the ball around with fluidity. The Suns’ Steve Nash helped lead his team to victory by dishing the ball for 11 assists, while Amare Stoudemire led the team with 22 points. In their most recent contest, Phoenix was downed by Chris Paul and the Hornets, 108-95. The favorite in this matchup is 10-3-1 ATS in the last 14 battles on the parquet. Even more impressive is Phoenix’s nine straight wins in head-to-head games against Portland. A 6-2 ATS record in the last eight in favor of the Suns should entertain bettors’ decision making process on Saturday’s card.

From the Coast to the Mountains

Another case of one team dominant over another includes the Lakers stranglehold over Denver throughout last year’s playoffs. This tight grip has translated into L.A. dominating the Nuggets in seven straight wins and eight straight against the spread. The ‘under’ in these head-to-head contests has also been a dominating force with a 7-3 record in the last 10 and a 5-1 frequency in the last six. After coming off a lights out win over the Clippers, 117-79, the Lake Show seems to have picked up where it left off last season. The difference is that Andrew Bynum is healthy again and the depth from the starting rotation to the bench is as solid as ever. Expect forward Luke Walton to receive less playing minutes with Bynum back in action. The Nuggets are just hoping that the loss of Marcus Camby won’t affect the defensive effort in a drastic way. Forward Linas Kleiza is expect to pick up a brunt of the ‘D’ this time around.
