NBA News and Notes Friday, October 31

Friday's NBA Tip Sheet
By Brad Young

**Warriors at Raptors**

-Caesars Palace opened Toronto as an eight-point home ‘chalk’ over Golden State, with the total set at 205. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET.

-Golden State started the season with a home loss to New Orleans Wednesday as a 6 ½-point underdog, 108-103. The combined 211 points went ‘over’ the 208-point closing total.

-The Warriors were outrebounded, 42-39, and allowed the Hornets to shoot 50 percent (41-of-82) from the field. Corey Maggette paced the offense with 27 points and eight rebounds, while Stephen Jackson added 26 and five assists.

-Now the Warriors embark on a three-game road trip that concludes with games against New Jersey and Memphis. Golden State was an average 21-20 SU and 20-20 ATS on the road last season, with the ‘under’ going 22-18.

-The Warriors are 3-1 SU and ATS the previous four meetings with Toronto after winning the last meeting back in March as a 10-point home ‘chalk,’ 117-106.

-Toronto opened the 2008-09 campaign by beating Philadelphia as a five-point road underdog, 95-84. The combined 179 points failed to eclipse the 190-point closing total.

-The Raptors were dominated on the boards (56-33), but prevailed by limiting the Sixers to just 36 percent shooting (29-of-84). Toronto forward Chris Bosh led all scorers with 27 points while grabbing 11 rebounds.

-Golden State guard Monta Ellis is ‘out’ due to an ankle injury.

**Magic at Grizzlies**

-Caesars Palace installed Orlando as a 6½-point road favorite over Memphis, with the total listed at 190 ½. This game is scheduled to start at 8:05 p.m. ET.

-Orlando hopes to get on the winning track after falling to Atlanta Wednesday as an eight-point home ‘chalk,’ 99-85. The combined 184 points never seriously threatened the 202 ½-point closing total.

-The Magic couldn’t dig themselves out of a hole after finishing the first quarter down 26-13. Orlando was outrebounded, 53-45, and shot just 37 percent (32-of-87) from the field. Center Dwight Howard enjoyed a solid effort with 22 points and 15 rebounds in a losing effort.

-The Magic follow this road contest with a five-game homestand. Orlando was 28-18 SU and 29-17 ATS last season on the road, with the ‘under’ going 25-20.

-Memphis fell to Houston Wednesday in its season opener as a 12½-point road underdog, 82-71. The combined 153 points fell well below the 191 1/2-point closing total.

-Tony Parker and Tim Duncan each scored 32 points in the setback, helping the team shoot a blistering 50 percent (40-of-80) from the field.

-The Spurs alternate home and away games their first five outings of the season. San Antonio went just 24-26 SU and 18-31 ATS last year on the road, with the ‘under’ going 31-18.

-The Spurs are 7-0 SU and 4-3 ATS the last seven meetings with Portland, while the ‘under’ has cashed the previous two games.

Re: NBA News and Notes Friday, October 31

Golden State (0-1, 1-0 ATS) at Toronto (1-0 SU and ATS)

The Raptors opened the season with an impressive 95-84 upset victory over the Sixers on Wednesday, cashing as a five-point road underdog. Chris Bosh (27 points, 11 rebounds) led four Toronto players in double figures against Philadelphia.

The Warriors got 27 points from newcomer Corey Maggette and 26 from Stephen Jackson in Wednesday’s opener against the Hornets, but it wasn’t enough as Golden State fell 108-103, but covered as a seven-point home underdog. The Warriors have lost three in a row and seven of 10 dating to last year (2-8 ATS).

Golden State is on a 5-1 SU and ATS run against the Raptors, including a 106-100 win as a 6½-point underdog in their lone trip to Canada last year. The host is 6-2 ATS in the last eight series clashes, all as a favorite, and the SU winner has covered the spread in each of the last 10 head-to-head battles.

Despite Wednesday’s upset win, Toronto is still just 10-22 ATS in its last 33 games overall. The Raptors are on additional ATS slide of 0-6 against the Western Conference, 2-8 versus the Pacific Division, 1-7 after a SU win, 1-9 on Fridays and 5-17 when playing on one day of rest. Meanwhile, going back to last season, the Warriors are 1-4 ATS in their last five on the highway and 8-21 ATS in their last 29 when playing on one day of rest. On the bright side, Golden State is on positive pointspread runs of 6-2 on Fridays and 5-1 against the East.

The Warriors are in the midst of “over” streaks of 4-0 overall, 12-3-1 against the Eastern Conference and 5-1-1 on Fridays, but the under is 7-2 in their last nine on the road and 8-2-1 in their last 11 against the Atlantic Division. Also, the under is 4-0 in Toronto’s last four overall and 5-0-1 in its last six at the Air Canada Centre.

ATS ADVANTAGE: GOLDEN STATE

Chicago (1-0 SU and ATS) at Boston (1-0, 0-1 ATS)

The Bulls head to Beantown to take on the defending NBA champs on the heels of Tuesday’s 108-95 season-opening rout of the Bucks, cashing as a six-point home favorite. Chicago, which has won and covered three in a row dating to the end of last season, spread the wealth around in the win over Milwaukee with six players scoring in double figures. That included rookie point guard Derrick Rose, who had 11 points, nine assists and four rebounds in his debut.

Boston raised its 17th championship banner to the rafters Tuesday, then needed to rally from a seven-point halftime deficit to top Cleveland 90-85. Paul Pierce (27 points) was one of five players to score in double digits for the Celtics, who failed to cover as a 6½-point home chalk, ending a 7-0 ATS run going back to last year’s Eastern Conference finals.

The Celtics swept a four-game season series from Chicago last year, winning all four games by double digits, with the average margin of victory being 18.3 points per game. Not only did Boston easily cover the number in all four contests, but it is 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings. Prior to last year, Chicago had been on a 6-0 SU and 5-1 ATS tear against the Celtics.

The SU winner is 10-0 ATS in the Bulls’ last 10 games overall and 9-1 ATS in the last 10 meetings between these teams.

Even though it has cashed in three straight games, Chicago is still in ATS slides of 7-21 against the Atlantic Division, 6-21 after a SU victory, 2-9 after a double-digit victory, 1-6 after a spread cover and 1-5 when playing on two days’ rest. Boston is on ATS runs of 15-6 at home and 6-2 when going on two days’ rest, but Doc Rivers’ club is 3-9 ATS in its last 12 versus the NBA Central.

The under is 6-2 in the Bulls’ last eight games overall, but the over is 13-4-2 in their last 19 on the highway, 10-3 in their last 13 on Friday and 7-2 in their last nine against the Atlantic Division. For the Celtics, the under is on runs of 4-1 against the Eastern Conference and 4-1 versus the Central Division. The under is also 6-2 in the last eight Boston-Chicago matchups, but four of the last five meetings in Boston have hurdled the total.

ATS ADVANTAGE: BOSTON

San Antonio (0-1 SU and ATS) at Portland (0-1 SU and ATS)

The Spurs came up short in Wednesday’s season opener against the Suns, falling 103-98 as a 1½-point home favorite despite 32 points each from superstars Tony Parker and Tim Duncan. San Antonio has dropped three in a row and five of its last six going back to last spring’s Western Conference Finals series against the Lakers. However, Gregg Popovich’s squad is still 12-4 (9-7 ATS) in its last 16 regular-season contests.

Portland not only got humiliated in its opener – a 96-76 loss at the Lakers as an eight-point underdog – but it lost center Greg Oden to a foot injury early in the game. Oden, who didn’t score in 13 minutes in his NBA debut, is expected to miss at least two to four weeks. The Blazers shot a dismal 34.5 percent from the field against Los Angeles, while allowing the Lakers to make 46.8 percent of their attempts.

The Spurs enter tonight’s contest on a 12-game winning streak against Portland, and they’re 20-9 ATS in the last 29 battles. However, the Blazers went 2-1 ATS in last year’s three meetings, and the teams have alternated spread-covers in the last six head-to-head clashes. Finally, the host is on a 5-1 ATS roll in this rivalry.

San Antonio failed to cover in 10 of its final 13 road games last season (playoffs included) while also going 3-7 ATS in its last 10 against the Northwest Division. On the other hand, the Blazers are on positive pointspread streaks of 5-2 overall, 4-0 at home and 4-1 after a SU defeat.

The Spurs’ game against Phoenix on Wednesday easily eclipsed the posted total, ending a nine-game “under” streak going back to last year’s playoffs. The under is still on runs for San Antonio of 5-0 on the road, 6-1 on Fridays and 4-1 against the Northwest. Also, Portland sports under streaks of 4-1 overall, 12-4 on Fridays, 37-14 against Western Conference foes and 44-21-1 versus Southwest Division opponents.

ATS ADVANTAGE: UNDER

Re: NBA News and Notes Friday, October 31

Tips and Trends

New York Knicks at Philadelphia 76ers

Knicks: The only negative part of head coach Mike D'Antoni's debut with New York on Wednesday came on the defensive end, but that's really no surprise for anybody who followed him with the Suns. D'Antoni saw a much improved offensive performance in a 120-115 win over Miami in the season opener, but his Knicks nearly blew a 23-point lead. The Heat pulled within three points in the final minute, but New York held on for the victory. Point guard Stephon Marbury and center Eddy Curry both did not play in the game and don't appear to fit in D'Antoni's plans.

Knicks are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 Friday games.
The OVER is 7-1 in New York's last 8 road games.

Key Injuries - C Eddy Curry (knee) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 104

76ers (-8.5, O/U 217): As hot as the Knicks were in their season opener, Philly was about as cold as the weather during the World Series. The 76ers shot just 34.5 percent from the field in a 95-84 home loss to Toronto on Wednesday, missing 15 of 20 attempts from 3-point range. Elton Brand totaled 14 points and 13 rebounds in his first game with the team, and Philadelphia has won the last seven meetings at home along with nine of 11 overall.

76ers are 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings.
The UNDER is 16-5 in Philadelphia's last 21 home games.

Key Injuries - G Royal Ivey (suspension) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 112

Chicago Bulls at Boston Celtics

Bulls: Rookie point guard Derrick Rose may not have filled up the stat line like some would expect from the #1 overall pick in the draft, but it's how he made his teammates better that caught the attention of insiders. Rose totaled 11 points and nine assists in a 108-95 win over Milwaukee on Wednesday while Luol Deng and Tyrus Thomas combined for 36 points and 14 rebounds running alongside him. That helped make a winner of new head coach Vinny Del Negro in his debut in front of the home fans.

Bulls are 0-5 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
The UNDER is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings.

Key Injuries - G Larry Hughes (shoulder) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 88 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Celtics (-9.5, O/U 191): NBA experts expect Boston to play more loose after surviving a close call in the season opener against Cleveland on Tuesday. The Celtics used a 24-13 third quarter to overtake the Cavs after trailing by double digits in the first half, as they were led by reigning NBA Finals MVP Paul Pierce with 27 points in an eventual 90-85 victory. Boston won all four meetings with Chicago last season by at least 11 points.

Celtics are 15-6 ATS in their last 21 home games.
Celtics are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall.

Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 98

San Antonio Spurs at Portland Trail Blazers

Spurs: The NBA's oldest team visits the youngest in the league, and both teams will face an early test here. San Antonio is looking to bounce back from a 103-98 home loss to Phoenix on Wednesday despite 32 points apiece from Tim Duncan and Tony Parker. The problem is, Roger Mason was the only other Spur to score in double figures with 12. Kurt Thomas filled in at center for Fabricio Oberto (irregular heartbeat) and scored just two points while Michael Finley and Bruce Bowen combined for eight.

Spurs are 3-10 ATS in their last 13 road games.
The UNDER is 8-0 in San Antonio's last games overall.

Key Injuries - G Manu Ginobili (ankle) is OUT.
C Fabricio Oberto (irregular heartbeat) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 87

Blazers (-1, O/U 178): Portland got off to a disappointing start to the season on Tuesday in a 96-76 road loss to the Lakers. Not only did they struggle to shoot the ball (35 percent from the field), but rookie C Greg Oden sprained his right foot late in the second quarter. Big things are expected from Oden - the #1 pick in the 2007 NBA draft - but he is expected to miss 2-4 weeks with the injury. How his teammates respond during that stretch could go a long way to showing how good they can be this year.

Blazers are 1-4 ATS in the last 5 home meetings.
The UNDER is 12-4 in Portland's last 16 Friday games.

Key Injuries - C Greg Oden (foot) is OUT.
G Martell Webster (foot) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 91 (Side Play of the Day)

Re: NBA News and Notes Friday, October 31

NBA Research Friday
By IndianCowboy

Thoughts on Yesterday:

As predicted the Bobcats struggled in their first game with Brown at the helm and the game went under. The Cavs bounced-back nicely from their loss at Boston and looked solid as they covered with ease. Houston won outright at Dallas as 4 point dogs and the game went to 214 which was set at 190. Also, how about the Hornets taking it to the Suns and also winning outright on the road as 3 point underdogs while that game went over as well. Once again, the NBA dogs are covering with ease in the early going. After all, you have small dogs that are covering and the games are consequently going over the posted total as well.

New York vs. Philadelphia

The Knicks looked solid at home in their opener against Miami and now they try to take the show on the road to Philadelphia. You want to know what's interesting about this game? It is the fact that the total opened up at 209.5 and has risen to 217.5. I guess folks have realized that the Knicks are going to run and gun and consequently the lines rise immediately upon open. Note that the Knicks are 7.5 dogs today but the Sixers looked terrible in their first game. Usually what happens is the fact that when the public hammers the underdog, especially the road dog, such is the case here, the favorite that is not backed by the public wins. Remember, the Sixers had a terrible first game and this is the first road game for the Knicks. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Sixers do very well today and win and qute possibly cover.

Golden State vs. Toronto

The public is split even on this game. The total opened up at -8.5 and went down to -7.5 This typically indicates the underdog to do well and this game likely to go over. The Warriors nearly beat Hornets at home in their first game. Heck, they did better tha the Suns by comparing scores against the Hornets. This is a game that theWarriors could do well as the Raptors return home off a big win against the Sixers. The total has risen slightly for this game. I would look for a dog cover here and an over as well. But, if you do take Golden State, you will have to take some tums as you typically would not want to go against the Raps at home.

Chicago vs. Boston

Well, we'll see how far these Bulls have come. The public is split on this game as well. The line is set at 190 and has not budged a bit. Frankly, how do you against the Celtics at home? In the same token, the Celtics have an odd way of pulling out wins but barely and of course, teams get up to play the Celtics. Having said this, I would not be surprised if the C's try to make a quick statement here and lay the law down for a double-digit win here.

Orlando vs. Memphis

The Magic are undoubtedly ticked off after their home opener loss to my Hawks. The line quickly moved up from -5 to -6 and you better believe Van Gundy rose their tails in practice after their loss. In fact, the Magic after a loss were one of the best plays last year. But, it is always irritating to have the public ride the road dog to a tune of 63% here. What is more interesting is the fact the total has come down 9 points since its opening which actually favors the favorite/under. Henec, that is my lean given that I favor the Magic following their loss and they will likely play a better defensive game than their first game.
