SCOREBOARD

Wednesday, Oct. 29

Minnesota at Dallas (8:30 p.m. EDT). The Wild (6-0-1) have yet to lose a game in regulation this season and are 3-0 on the road as they get set to visit the Stars (3-4-2).

STARS

Tuesday

— Antero Niittymaki, Flyers, stopped 24 shots in a 2-0 win over Atlanta to earn his fourth career shutout and improve to 10-0 in his career against the Thrashers.

— Mike Knuble, Simon Gagne and Joffrey Lupul, Flyers, each scored two goals to lead Philadelphia to its 11th straight win over Atlanta, 7-0.

— Vincent Lecavalier, Lightning, scored a pair of highlight-reel goals to help carry Tampa Bay to a 3-2 victory over Toronto.

— Miikka Kiprusoff, Flames, made 22 saves to earn his first shutout of the season—27th overall—and his 150th NHL victory in Calgary’s 3-0 win against Colorado.

STEPPING UP

Michael Nylander scored in a shootout and the Washington Capitals generated enough firepower to overcome the absence of Alex Ovechkin and beat the Nashville Predators 4-3. Ovechkin, the NHL’s leading scorer and MVP last season, left for Russia on Monday to be with his ailing grandfather. The slick-shooting left winger had played in 203 consecutive games and 253 of 254 in his career.

STREAKING

Mike Knuble, Simon Gagne and Joffrey Lupul each scored two goals and the Philadelphia Flyers earned their 11th straight win over the Atlanta Thrashers with 7-0 victory Tuesday night. The Flyers won their third consecutive game overall after a sluggish 0-3-3 start. … Colorado (5-4) had its five-game winning streak end in a 3-0 defeat against the Calgary Flames. The Avalanche hadn’t lost since dropping a 5-4 decision to the Flames in Calgary on Oct. 14.

ROUGHED UP

Atlanta Thrashers rookie defenseman Zach Bogosian, the No. 3 pick in this year’s draft, didn’t return to the ice after Philadelphia’s Darroll Powe slammed him into the boards midway through the second period of the Flyers’ 7-0 rout Tuesday night.

SCORING START

Lightning rookie forward Steven Stamkos, the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft, earned his first NHL point with an assist in Tampa Bay’s 3-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night.

EASY NIGHT

Evgeni Nabokov made only 10 saves in the Sharks’ 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Ruslan Fedotenko ended Nabokov’s bid for his 41st career shutout on a setup from Sidney Crosby. The Penguins’ 11 shots tied the fewest in franchise history and set a new defensive record for the Sharks, who are off to their best 10-game start at 8-2. Pittsburgh managed only 11 shots three previous times, including two games in 2003.

TWICE AS NICE

Tim Thomas made 30 saves for his second 1-0 win in two nights, leading the Boston Bruins to a victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday. Michael Ryder scored his second goal of the season midway through the first period for the Bruins, who have won three in a row. Thomas and the visiting Bruins beat Edmonton 1-0 in overtime on Monday. After splitting the first eight games with Manny Fernandez, Thomas earned a second straight start following his 27-save shutout of the Oilers.

HISTORIC HABS

The Montreal Canadiens honored coaching legends Dick Irvin, Toe Blake and Scotty Bowman as part of the team’s 100th season celebrations before Tuesday night’s 3-2 win over Carolina. Bowman, currently a senior adviser with the Chicago Blackhawks, was on hand for the ceremonial faceoff along with broadcaster Dick Irvin Jr. and Blake’s son, Bruce Blake. Irvin, Blake and Bowman coached the Canadiens to a total of 16 Stanley Cup championships between 1940 and 1979.

YOUNG LEAF

Luke Schenn, chosen four spots after top pick Steven Stamkos in this year’s draft, played his first game since being told that he’d stay with the Toronto Maple Leafs rather than return to his junior team, Kelowna of the Western Hockey League. Schenn is the Leafs’ first 18-year-old player since Drake Berehowsky in 1990.

SPEAKING

“I thought we did a good job and that’s what’s frustrating about the shootout, now everybody’s saddled with a loss and it’s like you buried your dead cat in the locker room—nobody’s talking.”—Carolina coach Peter Laviolette following the Hurricanes’ 3-2 shootout loss to Montreal on Tuesday night.

“Obviously, we miss Ovie. Our hearts are with him, and what he’s dealing with. But we want to be known as the Washington Capitals—a good hockey team, not just a team with one or two good players.”—Capitals forward Brooks Laich on teammate Alexander Ovechkin, who left the team to be with his ailing grandfather in Russia.

Re: NHL News and Notes Wednesday, October 29

Ron Raymond's NHL Forecast for Oct 29th
by Ron Raymond

Toronto vs. New Jersey

Ron Wilson might want to pack a few bottles of Tums this evening, because he's playing on the road against a team who will be in a nasty mood after losing 2 straight fight filled games vs. the Flyers. Plus, to make matters worst, when the Devils are at home on 3 days rest after a division game, they are 11-1 SU in this spot. Furthermore, this has the making of a low scoring game, as the UNDER is a perfect 6-0-1 for the Devils after losing 2 straight games after a division game. Furthermore, Toronto has seen the UNDER go to 12-4-1 when they hit the road, playing in back to back games and they are coming off a home lost in the first game of the back to back game situation. Brodeur has 3 shutouts lifetime vs. the Leafs and could make it 4 tonight!

Prediction: New Jersey 3 Toronto 0

Minnesota vs. Dallas

The Wild are 3-0 on the road this season, but their road wins were against Tampa Bay, Florida and Atlanta! Minnesota heads to Dallas for a Western Conference showdown with the Stars and they are 3-10-1 SU in Dallas since 2000 and 5 of the last 6 games between these 2 clubs has gone OVER the total in Big D. The Wild are Coach by Jacques Lemaire and Mario Tremblay, 2 ex-Montreal Canadiens coaches and players and guess who they have on Deck on Thursday night? You betcha, the Habs will be sitting in their hotel rooms tonight watching this game and this is your classic look ahead spot for the Wild. Marty Turco is 11-4-0 vs. Minnesota and the Stars, who lost 6-5 on Monday vs. Washington, are 8-2 SU for 80% after a non conference game the last 2 years.

Prediction: Dallas 5 Minnesota 2

Detroit vs. Anaheim

Nothing like going on a 4 game road trip and you're feeling good about your hockey team after winning those 4 games, to find out you have Detroit waiting for you in your first game back at home! Plus, the Detroit Red Wings are currently on a 5 game winning streak and have seen their last 6 games go OVER the posted total. In fact, looking over the data the last 5 years, when the Red Wings have seen the OVER go 5 or more they are a perfect 8-0 in their next game! Plus, the Ducks have the opportunity to come out flat here this evening, as they haven't played well in their 4 wins with the exception of the 6-4 win over the rusty Canadiens on Saturday night. But, the Red Wings aren't blowing teams out of the water either, but they have the experience to win the close ones; as they are 8-1 (SU) the last 2 years when they are coming off two 1-goal wins and that record goes to 13-4 (SU) last 5 years. Ducks come out flat and the Wings capitalize early.

Prediction: Detroit 4 Anaheim 1
