Breeders Cup Turf Sprint News and Notes
By Anthony Stabile

Turf Sprint: 6 ½ furlongs(T); $1 million; 3up; Saturday, 1:50pm on ABC

The History

You’re witnessing it.. This is the first running of this event.

The Best
Favorite Mr. Nightlinger has done little wrong in his career when it comes to running on the turf. After losing his first turf try over 18 months ago, he’s won his last five starts, all in gate-to-wire fashion, all on the lawn. He will have to negotiate an extra furlong or so in here and will have plenty of company on the lead, but he’s dueled and survived in large fields before.

Fleeting Spirit tries the boys and adds Lasix for her U.S. debut. After beating colts in his seasonal bow, she was third in a G1 at the world famous Royal Ascot meeting before finishing fifth in her first start in over two months on the Arc undercard last out behind Euro-sprint specialist Marchand d’ Or in another G1.

The Rest
California Flag won the G3 Morvich last out on the lead. Desert Code has won three times going down the hill at Santa Anita at this distance. Diabolical ships in having not won a turf race in over two years. Get Funky won last years Morvich and was second in the event this season. Heros Reward has won half of his 18 starts on turf. Idiot Proof was second in his turf debut two starts back off a 4 ½ month layoff. One Union was third in Morvich and has won just one time in last two seasons. Only Answer ships in from Europe off a G3 victory in France. Rouse the Cat has hit the board in six of seven grass starts and just missed by a nose in the G2 Nearctic last out at 55-1. Salute the Count won a minor stakes at Belmont last out and was second in a pair of G3s early this year. Storm Treasure has won just twice from 16 tries on grass and appears to need more ground. True to Tradition won the Nearctic at Woodbine last out after taking a minor Philly Park stakes race two back.

The Scenario
California Flag and Mr. Nightlinger figure to really mix it up on the engine with Desert Code, Idiot Proof, One Union and True to Tradition hounding them all the way. Diabolical, Fleeting Spirit, Get Funky, Heros Reward and Only Answer will be in mid-pack. Rouse the Cat, Salute the Count and Storm Treasure are one-run closers.

The Strategy
Spread out. Mr. Nightlinger is going to have a rough time of it trying to go wire them, and figures to be the chalk. Find a few to use because anything can happen down the hill.

The Bomb
Get Funky likes the course and the distance and has held his own with some of those that figure to take money in here. He should be 15-1.
