Hockey Today

SCOREBOARD

Wednesday, Oct. 22

Edmonton at Chicago (9 p.m. EDT). The Oilers (4-0-0) look to remain unbeaten as they visit the Blackhawks.

STARS

Tuesday

— Derek Dorsett, Blue Jackets, scored his first NHL goal in a 4-2 win over Vancouver.

— Vincent Lecavalier, Lightning, scored with 3:19 left in overtime for a 3-2 victory over Atlanta and Barry Melrose’s first win as coach.

FIRST W

Barry Melrose’s first win as Tampa Bay coach nearly got away. The Lightning blew a two-goal lead in the third period and needed a power-play tally from Vincent Lecavalier in overtime to beat Atlanta 3-2 Tuesday.

WORTH A SHOT

When the Maple Leafs and Ducks headed to a shootout Tuesday night, Toronto coach Ron Wilson pulled starting goalie Vesa Toskala and sent in Curtis Joseph. Despite having allowed only 28 percent of shooters to score vs. Toskala’s 54, Corey Perry and Teemu Selanne beat Joseph to give the Ducks a 3-2 win.

MILESTONE

Sergei Fedorov scored his 473rd career goal in Washington’s 2-1 loss at Calgary, tying him with Alexander Mogilny for most career NHL goals by a Russian-born player.

SPEAKING

“I was playing the percentages. I’m not going to hesitate to do that until we get Tosk a little more practice—a different way of thinking on stopping the other team in shootouts. I had nothing to lose.”—Toronto coach Ron Wilson, after he pulled starting goalie Vesa Toskala and sent in Curtis Joseph for the shootout, which the Maple Leafs lost anyway in a 3-2 setback against Anaheim.

Tuesday's best NHL bets
COVERS.com

Atlanta at Tampa Bay (-130, 5.5)

The Lightning have new owners, a new coach, and a boatload of new players still trying to get to know each other. And you wonder why they’ve started the year 0-2-3. The truth is, as much as the Florida media wants to make this team out to be an exciting group of new talent, headlined by No. 1 overall pick Steven Stamkos, the Lightning are dealing with a bunch of issues.

Offseason acquisitions Mark Recchi and Gary Roberts have seen better days, while Adam Hall and Chris Gratton don’t offer a whole lot to be excited about, either. Plus, Radim Vrbata (who scored 27 goals last year for Phoenix last year) has already spent a game watching from the press box, while ownership and Barry Melrose squabble about Stamkos’ ice time. Not a good situation.

It will get better - at least marginally - for Tampa eventually, but this club has a lot of kinks to work out and questions to answer first.

Pick: Atlanta (+120)

Anaheim at Toronto (+115, 5.5)

It’s so easy to dump on the Leafs, but Toronto fans will be treated with something they haven’t seen in ages this year: a team that actually puts out an honest day’s work.

Toronto will have to live with youthful mistakes after dumping so many veterans in the offseason, but Ron Wilson is a good fit behind the bench and this team plays hard for him. Goals will be tough to come by with Nik Antropov and Jason Blake leading the offense, though they should be in a lot games if they commit to defense first andstay out of the penalty box.

The Leafs catch the Ducks still sleepwalking out of the gate in this spot, so it might end up a lot closer than you’d think.

Pick: under
