The Mile 1 mile(T); $2 million; 3up; Saturday, 3:15pm on ABC

The History

The amazing Miesque beat the boys in back to back runnings in 1987 and 1988. Lure dazzled in 1992 and 1993. Da Hoss won it in 1996, raced once in between then was victorious again in 1998 in one of the most amazing feats in the history of the sport. Cozzene and War Chant are two other noteworthy winners of the Mile.

The Best
The Irish-bred filly sensation Goldikova is one of just a handful of fillies that will race on Saturday. Instead of running against her own in the F&M Turf, she’ll try the boys in here and with good reason. She’s won five times from seven starts at the mile distance with two seconds and most recently captured the G1 Prix du Moulin against colts in France, defeating highly regarded Classic hopeful Henrythenavigator in the process.

Defending Mile champ Kip Deville won his first two starts this year after throwing in a clinker in the G1 Woodbine Mile in his most recent try. Still, he’s won nine of thirteen at the distance and won a pair of stakes including the G1 Kilroe in his two starts over the Santa Anita turf course.

Perhaps a return to Santa Anita is just what the doctor ordered for Daytona. After winning three of his first four starts this year, Daytona has tailed off lately with a pair of off the board finishes at Hollywood and Del Mar but is perfect in three starts here.

The Rest
Bold Chieftain has done the majority of his best work against fellow California breds. Lord Admiral will be making the 47th start of his career in his Breeders’ Cup debut. Precious Kitten tries the boys and has a win and five seconds from six starts at the distance. Shakis seems to do his best running at longer distance and up at Saratoga. Thorn Song captured the G1 Shadwell Turf over a few in here in his most recent. Us Ranger ships in for O’Brien/Coolmore but owns just a second from seven starts this season. War Monger was third in the Shadwell after racing wide most of the way. Whatsthescript is two for three over the course, four for five at the distance and has won a pair of G2’s from three starts for his new connections.

The Scenario
Daytona and Thorn Song figure to mix it up on the front end. Goldikova, Kip Deville and Precious Kitten should be on the chase. Bold Chieftain, War Monger and Whatsthescript will race in mid-pack. Lord Admiral, Shakis and Us Ranger will be running late.

The Strategy
This race looks chalky to me. It’s hard for me to imagine Goldikova or Kip Deville not winning this race. Use them in multi-race exotics and find value in other spots.

The Bomb
War Monger was third over the course this spring in the Kilroe after a tough trip. He should appreciate the firm going in this spot but you need to get at least 15-1.
