Re: TUESDAY PREMIUM SERVICE PLAYS

Larry Ness

15* MAC Game of the Month

Temple -3 vs Ohio

The MAC East is wide open this year, as every team in that division owns at least two losses, with 2-2 Akron residing in first place. In comparison, the West features No. 20 Ball State, CMU (won last two MAC titles), Northern Illinois and Western Michigan. Those four teams are a combined 14-2 in MAC play, with Northern Illinois' loss coming to WMU and WMU's loss coming against CMU. You get the idea. Ohio U's Frank Solich has his Bobcats at 1-2 and knows a win here moves him into a temporary tie with Akron in the East. Ohio has faced a tough early schedule this year, losing at Wyoming 21-20, hanging with Ohio State well into the 4th quarter at Columbus, losing by three at home to CMU and losing 16-8 at Northwestern, which was unbeaten at the time. Boo Jackson took over at QB in the Ohio State game and threw three INTs. However, he's done a pretty good job since, completing 61.8 percent of his passes for an average of 245.4 YPG with nine TDs and five INTs. He's really been helped the last three games by the emergence of redshirt freshman RB Donte Harden, who has run for 322 (5.6 YPC) the last three games. However, Harden injured his shoulder in Ohio's last game and is now expected to miss the season. That's really bad news here against a Temple defense which is very good. The Owls are allowing just 19.3 PPG on the season and that includes the 45 points they allowed at Penn State. A quick check of the stats will show that Temple allows 156.3 YPG on the ground, which ranks 78th in the nation. However, one MUST look closer. Check Temple's three non-conference opponents this year. The Owls opened with Army, which is 8th in the nation averaging 253 YPPG on the ground. Army had 210 YR on 58 attempts, although Temple won 35-7. Then there was U Conn and its RB Donald Brown, who is the nation's leading rusher. Brown ran for 214 all by himself, but Temple barely lost, 12-9 in OT. Lastly, there was Penn State, the nation's 3rd-ranked team (10th in rushing), which ran for 303 yards. Now let's look at what four MAC teams have done vs Temple. Buffalo (31-101), WMU (26-36), Mia-Ohio (39-91) and CMU (40-55) have combined to gain just 283 yards rushing vs the Owls, an average of 70.8 per game and 2.1 YPC! With Harden out, the Bobcats really have no one, meaning all the pressure will be on QB Boo Jackson. Temple is hoping that QB Adam DiMicehle can return for this one (Owls are saying it's a game-time decision) but even if he doesn't, Chester Stewart has taken plenty of snaps as the team's starting QB. He's been erratic (had three TD passes at Miami-O but three INTs at CMU) but I'm siding with Temple either way. This is just Temple's third home game of the season and it's a rare chance for the Owls to play on TV. Since losing its home opener to Louisville in 2006 (Cardinals went 12-1 that year), Temple is on an 8-2-1 ATS run at home. Meanwhile, the Bobcats are playing their third straight road game and have been about a 33 percent ATS propostion on the conference road over the last decade. MAC Game of the Month 15* Temple.

Vancouver/Columbus Under 5 1/2 -1.13 (3 Unit Play)

These teams have been two of the worst defensive teams in the NHL so far as both have allowed 21 goals but they have two of the better goalies in net tonight as Roberto Luongo should be between the pipes for the Canucks and Pascal LeClaire should be in net for the Blue Jackets. These teams met four times last year and while the total was only 1-0-3 to the Under the total was set every time at 5 and I think because of the recent performances that this line is slightly high. This will be Vancouver's last game of a six game road trip and they would like to wrap it up with a victory. This looks to be a low scoring game to me.

Boston +1.67 (2 Unit Play)

This line seems high to me so I am making a small play on the Bruins here. These teams were very close last year and played a lot of one goal games and with the way the NHL is right now I will take a shot a team at nearly +1.70 that has a legitimate shot at a victory here tonight. Boston has played the much tougher schedule thus far and although they are off of a SO loss last night against Pittsburgh they played a very solid game. The Sabres have killed off all 24 power play opportunities thus far this season and things tend to even out over time. Look for the Bruins to win this evening.

Toronto +1.20 (3.5 Unit Play)

Anaheim travels for the first time out of the state of California tonight and have to travel all the way to Toronto to take on the Maple Leafs in the opener of a four game road trip. Anaheim has not played well at all this season and although they are taking on the Leafs here I am not sure they should be installed as road favorites, especially at this high of a price. They have arguably only played one good game this year and at 1-5 are probably happy they are hitting the road but you have to question the state of mind of the Ducks right now. The Leafs meanwhile have played pretty well considering that they were expected to be a bottom feeder this year and every game they will gain more confidence in playing in coach Ron Wilson's system. Vesa Toskala is in net for the Leafs tonight and he is off of a big shutout on the road against the Rangers. The Leafs look good to me as a home underdog this evening.

Temple -3 over Ohio
Both teams lost their starting QB's, but Temple might get DiMichele back tonight. Ohio lost their top running back to season ending surgery last week. Ohio is brutal inside of the redzone and points will be hard to come by. Temple has improved tremendously and has been in a ton of close games this season in which their record could be on the positive side. This Temple team has a bright coach who will turn this program around. Take the Owls at home
