Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Sprint
By Anthony Stabile

Filly & Mare Sprint: 7 furlongs; $1 million; 3up(f&m); Friday, 3:35 p.m. on ESPN2

The History

Maryfield won the inaugural running over a sloppy Monmouth Park surface last year.

The Best
There is little doubt in my mind that the defending Two Year Old Filly champion Indian Blessing will go off the solid favorite in here and rightfully so. She’s won eight of ten starts with two seconds, has never lost a race under a mile including two starts this distance. She’s looking for her fourth straight victory, having won both the G1 Prioress and Test this past summer before capturing the G2 Gallant Bloom last out by daylight. A win here would make her the first horse to win two different Breeders’ Cup races after winning last years’ Juvenile Fillies.

Indyanne, some would argue, should be coming into this with a perfect 6 for 6 record had she not gotten off to a terrible start in the G3 Victory Ride at Saratoga two back before wiring the G3 TCA at Keeneland in her latest. She’s 2 for 2 over synthetic surfaces and has tons of speed, always dangerous in sprint races.

Dearest Trickski is a speedy, synthetic track specialist who’s won 6 of 8 over these courses including two at this distance. She won the G1 La Brea in her final start of her three-year-old season before winning three of her four starts, including the G2 A Gleam at Hollywood, this year.

The Rest
Dream Rush is winless in three starts this season after winning multiple G1s last year. Intangaroo has won four of six this season, including the G1 Santa Monica and Ballerina at this distance. Lady Sprinter ships in from Argentina and is 8 for 8 on the dirt. La Tee’s three wins have come on the turf and is winless in two synthetic tries. Magnificence won the first three starts of her career against lesser before losing her last three against stakes company. Miraculous Miss hasn’t won a race in over two years. Psalm ships in for the powerful Aidan O’Brien barn, but all ten of her starts have come on turf. Tiz Elemental has done the bulk of her best work against lesser and California breds. Tizzy’s Tune won the restricted Pine Tree Lane over this course last out. Ventura is 2 for 3 over synthetic tracks and was second against the boys in the G1 Woodbine Mile last out. Zaftig defeated Indian Blessing in the G1 Acorn going a mile when she was last seen in early June. Jazzy is on the also eligible list.

The Scenario
Dearest Trickski, Dream Rush, Indyanne and Lady Sprinter all figure to knock heads on the front end. Indian Blessing, La Tee and Zaftig should be tracking them. Jazzy, Magnificence, Psalm, Tiz Elemental and Tizzy’s Tune should be mid-pack. Intangaroo, Miraculous Miss and Ventura do their best running late.

The Strategy
You won’t be getting much of a price to win if you like Indian Blessing so you may want to look at some multi-race exotics to up her value. If you’re not on her bandwagon, all the other win prices should be juicy.

The Bomb
Ventura won the G2 Madison at Keeneland over their Polytrack in just her second U.S. start this past spring. The pace in here figures to be wicked, which sets up her strong late kick perfectly.
