Breeders Cup Sprint
By Anthony Stabile

The Sprint - 6 furlongs; $2 million; 3up; Saturday, 5:15 p.m. on ESPN

The History Gulch in 1988, Artax in 1999 and 2000 winner Kona Gold are just some of the fantastic sprinters that have won this. Very Subtle, Safely Kept and Desert Stormer did the ladies proud by beating the boys in this event.

The Best Despite the fact that he’s winless in the only pair of starts he’s made since winning last year’s renewal of this event as the favorite, Midnight Lute figures to take plenty of action once again. He was defeated by Daaher in the G1 Cigar Mile a little less than a month after his score here last season in what would be his last start for nine months. This past August he had a terrible trip in the G2 Pat O’Brien and didn’t appear to be comfortable at all. Still, he merits consideration based on both his class and what appears to be a weak field.

Street Boss had a five race win streak snapped last out in the G1 Ancient Title but did manage to win both the G1 Triple Bend and Bing Crosby earlier this summer. He’s been training brilliantly for this spot.

You could have claimed Cost of Freedom for $50K three starts back and that’s exactly what trainer John Sadler did and it certainly paid off. In his two starts since the claim, he won an entry level allowance contest before posting a mild upset in the Ancient Title. He’s never missed the board in eight synthetic starts, including five wins and has won all three Santa Anita starts.

The Rest
Black Seventeen won the G1 Vosburgh over a sloppy, sealed Belmont Park strip in his latest. Fabulous Strike was second in the Vosburgh, a race he won last year before being forced to miss the Sprint due to injury. Fatal Bullet has won seven of his eight starts over synthetic tracks, including the G3 Kentucky Cup Sprint last out. First Defence flopped in the Vosburgh after winning the G1 Forego two back at Saratoga. In Summation has hit the board in seven of eight synthetic starts and has won twice at Santa Anita. J Be K has tailed off as of late after multiple graded stakes wins against three-year-olds earlier this year. Sing Bay Sing upset the G3 Phoenix at Keeneland last out at better than 26-1.

The Scenario
Black Seventeen, Fabulous Strike and J Be K figure to be the speed of the speeds. Cost of Freedom, Fatal Bullet and First Defence figure to fall in behind the front three while. In Summation and Sing Baby Sing should find themselves in mid-pack while Midnight Lute and Street Boss will be flying late.

The Strategy
I think Midnight Lute is a vulnerable chalk so I’ll probably spread in here with some of the other choices.

The Bomb
I don’t see anything too crazy happening here but if you’re one of those people that must use or bet on a longshot, First Defence might be for you. He’s impeccably bred and should be double digits on the tote board.
