SCOREBOARD

Thursday, Oct. 16

Philadelphia at Colorado (9 p.m. EDT). A matchup of winless teams.

STARS

Wednesday

— Fabian Brunnstrom, Stars, scored three goals in his NHL debut to match the league record in Dallas’ 6-4 victory over Nashville. The Swede became the third NHL player to open his career with a hat trick, joining Alex Smart of the Montreal Canadiens (Jan. 14, 1943) and Real Cloutier of the Quebec Nordiques (Oct. 10, 1979).

— Thomas Vanek, Sabres, had his second straight two-goal game—scoring on a power play and short-handed—to help Buffalo beat the New York Rangers 3-1. The former University of Minnesota star has five goals in three games this season.

— Alex Tanguay, Canadiens, scored the shootout winner to give Montreal a 4-3 victory over Boston in the Canadiens’ first home game in their 100th year.

— Mathieu Garon, Oilers, made 33 saves in Edmonton’s 3-2 victory over Anaheim.

STREAKS

Buffalo beat the Rangers 3-1 on Wednesday night, ending New York’s bid for the first 6-0 record in club history. The Rangers tied the team mark for the best start set in 1983. Ales Kotalik also snapped New York’s streak of 23 consecutive penalty kills to start the season. … Montreal beat Boston 4-3 in a shootout for its 12th straight regular-season victory over the Bruins.

STARPOWER

Former Canadiens greats Emile “Butch” Bouchard and Elmer Lach dropped the ceremonial first puck Wednesday night before Montreal’s 4-3 shootout victory over Boston in the Canadiens’ first home game in their 100th year. The 88-year-old Bouchard and 90-year-old Lach were on hand along with Jean Beliveau, Dickie Moore, Henri Richard, Yvan Cournoyer, Guy Lafleur, Bob Gainey, Guy Lapointe, Steve Shutt, Larry Robinson and Dick Duff as the team unveiled its new “Ring of Honor.”

STATS

Mike Modano scored two goals in Dallas’ 6-4 victory over Nashville on Wednesday night to push his career total to 530, the most by a U.S.-born player. … Buffalo’s Lindy Ruff, the longest current tenured coach in the NHL, became the 23rd to reach 400 victories, leading the Sabres to a 3-1 victory over the Rangers.

SAYING GOODBYE

Family, friends, teammates and thousands of fans paid their respects Wednesday to Alexei Cherepanov, the 19-year-old Rangers draft pick who died Monday night after suffering heart problems during a game outside Moscow. The cause of his death was still under investigation, federal investigators said.

SUSPENDED

Toronto left wing Ryan Hollweg received an automatic three-game suspension Wednesday following his fourth game misconduct within 41 games. Hollweg got a game misconduct for a boarding penalty Monday night in a shootout loss to St. Louis.

SPEAKING

“I wanted to play and be part of the team, but this team has really good players so you have to earn your spot. I felt comfortable out there from the start. It was fun, but the most important thing was that we won the game.”— Fabian Brunnstrom, after scoring three goals in his NHL debut to match the league record in Dallas’ 6-4 victory over Nashville on Wednesday night.

Thursday’s best NHL bets
COVERS.com

Washington vs. Pittsburgh (-135, 5.5)

These are the games the hockey world circles on the calendar before the season starts.

It’s the Caps versus the Pens. Ovechkin vs. Crosby. The NHL’s two biggest stars colliding in what most hope will be an offensive explosion.

Expect Sidney Crosby’s Pens to have defense on the mind when the Caps come to town for the first meeting of the year, though.

Pittsburgh was put through a grueling practice of skating on Monday following a dreadful defensive effort against New Jersey on Saturday in which Pittsburgh gave up 49 shots. The Pens only lost that one 2-1 in overtime thanks to some great goaltending by Marc-Andre Fleury, but head coach Michel Therrien posted his team’s individual turnovers in the locker room before practice Monday just to drive home his point.

Point taken. The Pens allowed a more respectable 30 shots on Monday in a 3-2 win over the Flyers.

Pick: Under

Vancouver vs. Detroit (-190, 5.5)

The Red Wings host Vancouver in a tough spot Thursday night.

Vancouver is coming off a horrible effort in a 5-1 loss in Washington on Monday that was preceded by a pair of big wins over western rival Calgary to open the season. Afterward, coach Alain Vigneault admitted his team wasn’t mentally prepared and he addressed that in a team meeting on Tuesday.

The Canucks should be more prepared for Thursday’s game in Motown and they’re hoping they’ll catch a Detroit squad in a soft spot. The Wings play their first game since making their Stanley Cup champions visit to the White House on Tuesday where they were yucking it up with President George W.

Detroit won both meetings at home against Vancouver last season, but the most recent one was a 3-2 shootout.

Pick: Vancouver +1.5 goals
