Wednesday's best NHL bets
By LIPPSMAN

New York Rangers at Buffalo Sabres

A matchup of unbeaten teams hits the ice tonight at Madison Square Garden. Buffalo comes in sporting a 2-0 record, recording wins over the Habs and Isles. The Rangers are off to their best start since 1983 at 5-0.

Buffalo is coming off a 7-1 victory over the Isles in a fight-filled game where the Sabres showed their grit. Buffalo also beat the Habs in a shootout Friday night, which bodes well for a team that missed the playoffs last year.

As an added bonus, Patrick Lalime looked sharp in nets after allowing just one goal on 24 shots against the Isles. Maybe Buffalo has someone that can give regular starter Ryan Miller more nights off so he is not worn down in March.

The Rangers learned the recent tragic news about their top prospect, Alexei Cherepanov, passing away after collapsing on the bench during a game in Russia. They didn’t miss a beat and took care of the Devils 4-1 on Monday.

Henrik Lundqvist is 4-0 in goal this year with a goals against average of 1.25 and a save percentage of .949. The Rangers haven’t allowed a goal on the penalty kill yet. Last year the Rangers won the season series 4-0 with the over/under going 2-2.

Pick: Rangers -145

Boston Bruins at Montreal Canadiens

Two of the Original Six meet tonight in Montreal.

Boston came out of nowhere to take the Habs to a seventh game in the playoffs last year despite entering the series as huge underdogs.

Boston really didn’t do anything in the offseason, besides adding Michael Ryder. They have a good young team that played over their heads against the Habs in the playoffs.

Don’t expect the same on Wednesday. Montreal is the real deal.

Boston has split its games this year by losing to Minny and beating the Avs. The disturbing thing is that the Bs have given up eight goals in two games. The Habs can score at will and have 11 goals in their last two games.

Montreal has gotten at least one point in all three games this year. They took Buffalo to a shootout and ramped up the scoring against the Leafs and Philly.

Pick: Montreal -165

Sabres C Hecht out with broken finger
October 14, 2008

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -Sabres forward Jochen Hecht will miss at least two weeks after having surgery to repair an injured finger on Tuesday.

General manager Darcy Regier announced the news after Hecht returned to Buffalo while the Sabres practiced in New York to prepare for a game against the Rangers on Wednesday. The team did not disclose the nature of the injury or which finger Hecht hurt.

The injury occurred early in the second period of a 7-1 win at the Islanders on Monday, after Hecht opened the scoring with his first goal of the season in the first period. A 10-year NHL veteran and in his sixth season with Buffalo, Hecht is a dependable two-way player who was centering the Sabres' second line alongside Jason Pominville and Daniel Paille.

Buffalo (2-0-0) is already without center Tim Connolly, who's out indefinitely with a back injury, and forward Paul Gaustad, who's expected to miss most of October after having surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb last month.

Isles D Martinek out 4-6 weeks
October 14, 2008

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) -New York Islanders defenseman Radek Martinek will be out four to six weeks because of an upper-body injury sustained during a game last weekend, the club said Tuesday.

Martinek was knocked out of the Islanders' home opener in the first period Saturday night after he absorbed a hard hit behind the net. He was evaluated by doctors that night and didn't play in New York's 7-1 loss to Buffalo on Monday.

The Islanders revealed the length of time Martinek is expected to miss, but declined to provide specific information about the injury.

Martinek was skating along the end boards behind the New York goal and crumpled after being crunched by St. Louis center David Backes with 3:10 left in the period. He remained down on the ice for a few moments before skating without assistance toward the tunnel to the dressing room.

It is the latest injury to the Islanders' already banged-up defense. Just three games into the season, New York is also missing Andy Sutton (hand surgery) and Chris Campoli (shoulder). Both are expected to be sidelined for several weeks.

The Islanders also sent down 22-year-old forward Blake Comeau to Bridgeport of the AHL on Tuesday. Comeau, who had eight goals and seven assists as a rookie in 57 games last season with the Islanders, didn't dress for any of New York's regular-season games this season.

He had no points in three games with the Islanders during the 2006-07 season after making his NHL debut.
