Week 6 Rewind
By Brian Edwards
Vanderbilt stole the show in Week 6 of the college football season. The Commodores fell behind Auburn 13-0 early and lost starting quarterback Chris Nickson to a shoulder injury. But with back-up QB Mackenzie Adams leading the way, Vandy rallied to capture a 14-13 win as a four-point underdog.
Bobby Johnson’s team is 5-0 and needs just one more win to become bowl eligible for the first time since 1982. The ‘Dores lead the SEC East with a 3-0 record. As of Monday morning, they were listed as one-point favorites for this week’s game at Mississippi State.
Pittsburgh won its fourth consecutive game Thursday night, stunning South Florida 26-21 as a 13 ½-point underdog. The Panthers hooked up money-line backers with a plus 400 payout.
The Bulls were the only Top-10 team to lose, though. Auburn and Wisconsin were the other ranked teams that went down.
The Badgers had to check into the Heartbreak Hotel for a second consecutive week when Ohio St. got an 11-yard TD run by Terrelle Pryor with 1:08 left. The freshman QB’s heroics lifted the Buckeyes to a 20-17 win as short road favorites. Beanie Wells rushed for 168 yards.
Missouri was absolutely dominant in a 52-17 spanking of Nebraska, the Tigers’ first win in Lincoln since the 1970s. Chase Daniel threw for 253 yards and three touchdowns, while Derrick Washington ran for 139 yards and two TDs and also caught a TD pass. Jeremy Maclin had five receptions for 89 yards and one TD.
Oklahoma and Texas both dodged their respective look-ahead spots. The Sooners took the cash in a 49-17 win at Baylor as 25-point favorites. Meanwhile, Texas mashed Colorado 35-14 as a 13-point road ‘chalk.’
Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened OU as a six-point favorite against the Longhorns this week in Dallas.
Although OU and Texas dodged look-ahead situations, Alabama and Ole Miss couldn’t avoid flat spots. The Crimson Tide won 17-14 against Kentucky, but the Wildcats took the cash as 15 ½-point road underdogs. The 31 combined points stayed ‘under’ the 44-point total.
A week after winning at Florida, Houston Nutt’s team lost to South Carolina 31-24 as a 2 ½-point home favorite. Chris Smelley threw for 327 yards and three touchdowns to spark the Gamecocks to the victory.
The Gators pulled out a miracle cover at Arkansas thanks to a 48-yard TD run by Jeff Demps with 1:04 left. UF started slow and only led 17-7 late in the third quarter, but Urban Meyer’s team eventually took the cash in a 38-7 win as a 25-point favorite.
Maryland is another squad that couldn't handle success. The Terrapins won 20-17 at Clemson last week, only to get throttled 31-0 at Virginia. There's just no excuse for that from the Twerps. A bagel in Charlottesville with the way things have been going for the Wahoos? Yikes.
**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**
--I wouldn’t be shocked if Auburn’s Tommy Tuberville fires (or demotes) offensive coordinator Tony Franklin this morning. The Tigers are averaging just 12.8 points per game in their last four outings.
--USC hasn’t lost back-to-back games since 2001.
--Notre Dame has won six of its last eight games.
--The ‘under’ is 4-1 in Pitt games.
--Miami already had issues galore on defense and that was evident in a 41-39 home loss to FSU. Now the ‘Canes will be without two of their top players, LB Colin McCarthy and DE Eric Moncur, for the rest of the season. UM has a 7-10 record under Randy Shannon.
--FSU's Antone Smith has rushed for seven touchdowns in the Seminoles' last two games.
