Alex Smart

Arizona Diamondbacks @ San Diego Padres Under 7.0

Brandon Webb the Arizona DBacks starter this afternoon against the San Diego Padres is off to a 5-0 start on the season, while garnering a stingy 2.31 ERA. His pitching opponent Jake Peavy , is also in red hot form, registering a 3-0 record along with a very tight 2.00 ERA. With two top quality hurlers on the hill today, the linesmakers have attached a small number to this tilt. But rightly so. With this contest in pitcher friendly PETCO Park, a low scoring pitching duel is a good bet. Final notes & Key Trends: The Padres , have gone under in all 7 home games this season, with a total of 7 or less , with the average combined run count clicking in at 4 RPG.Play on the under

New Orleans Hornets (58-27) at Dallas Mavericks (52-33)

The Mavericks have beaten the Hornets by nine points or more in all three games this season in Dallas and is 5-1 ATS in the last six games versus New Orleans at American Airlines Center. Go with Dallas at home. Dirk Nowitzki and crew play their best possible in their own house, 35-7 at home this year. The home team in this series has won and covered the spread in all seven meeting this year.

Cleveland +4 at WASHINGTON

How will the Cavaliers respond to the ass-whuppin' they took on Thursday? With an outright win and a 3-1 series lead today, so take the points!

The Wizards were hitting on all cylinders in that game and I don't believe they can duplicate that in this Game 4, even at home.  Washington is only 2-5 ATS the last seven when favored by less than five points.

Cleveland has bounced back from double-digit losses in a very profitable way lately, going 7-1 ATS the last eight games after being beaten by more than 10 points.  Despite the result of their last game, the Cavs are 4-1 ATS the last five games when listed as an underdog of less than five points.  They are on a 20-8 ATS run when on the road and getting less than five points.

VEGAS EXPERTS TIP OF THE DAY

Cincinnati Reds at San Francisco Giants

San Francisco doesn't want to hear it, but Barry Zito very well just might be the worst pitcher in all of baseball right now. He's already 0-5 on the year and we haven't even gotten to May! Reds starter Edison Volquez is at the other end of the spectrum boasting a 3-0 record with a 1.21 ERA. With the Giants only averaging 3.3 runs per game this year, take a look at the visitor.

Re: Suday Service Plays

MATT FARGO

Minnesota Twins @ Texas Rangers
PICK: Minnesota Twins

REASON FOR PICK: The Rangers lost again on Saturday, dropping their record to 3-13 over their last 16 games. Looking at those results and it is pretty obvious what the problem has been for Texas and it is on the mound. The Rangers have has huge problems with pitching over the years and this season is no different so far as they have posted a 5.55 ERA which is easily the worst in the American League. Texas has allowed seven runs or more in eight of its last 13 games.

The win on Saturday snapped a three-game losing skid for the Twins which came on the heels of a three-game winning streak. They continue to hang around the jumbled American League Central and are in need of another streak. The 12 runs put up last night was a huge confidence builder as Minnesota came in scoring three runs or fewer in six of its previous nine games. The 12 runs tied a season high and with the way the pitching woes continue for the Rangers, more of the same could be in line for us.

The Rangers send Vicente Padilla to the hill and it is pretty unclear what sort of performance you are going to get from him. He is coming off his worst start of the season as he allowed seven earned runs in just three innings at Detroit. He has tossed three quality outings in his five starts but it is important to note that those three all came on the road. His lone home outing was not a good one as he allowed five runs against the Blue Jays. He has posted a 4.38 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in 28 career starts at Ameriquest Field.

Minnesota counters with Livan Hernandez and he has been a great acquisition thus far. The Twins are a perfect 5-0 in his five starts and even though he has only three quality outings, he has pitched well enough in each game to qualify for a win. He has a very solid 3.55 ERA on the season and most impressive could be six walks he has issued. He had some command issues in his last game after cruising through four innings but he catches a Rangers team that is just 3-13 after scoring five runs or more in their last game. Re: Suday Service Plays

DREW GORDON

Detroit -5½ at PHILADELPHIA

Its never been a question of talent. Its never been a question of schemes or coaching. No, with the Pistons, its always been a question of effort. We all know on paper the Pistons should dominate the 76ers, who came into this series a considerable underdog by anyone's means. However, after a couple slaps in the face in Games 1 & 3, I believe the Pistons are finally "interested" in this series, and that makes all the difference.

You saw what happened in Game 2 after the 76ers had the nerve to win Game 1 at the Palace 90-86, the Pistons came out and thumped them by 17 points! I'm not saying Detroit does the same in Game 4, because the margin should be closer in Philly, but overall a motivated Pistons team can and will win and cover in this contest, and here's why

More than anything else, the Pistons are a veteran-laden team loaded with some pretty prideful characters, including Wallace and Billups. Both team leaders were total garbage in Game 3, as Billups shot 2 of 11 and had just 4 assists to his 3 turnovers. While Wallace, one of the harder working bigmen in the NBA, got completely outworked by Samuel Dalembert on both ends of the floor. Also, let's not forget they comitted 25 turnovers, which is totally out of character for this Pistons team.

Bottom line, coming off arguablly one of their laziest postseason efforts since this particular Pistons team was assembled, look for Detroit to come out with a renewed sense of purpose in this one. You'll see Rasheed diving for balls, while Billups and Hamilton reestablish control of the perimeter. In the end, its all about effort, and the Pistons should have plenty of it tonight after giving zero effort in Game 3.

Take Detroit over Philadelphia in Game 4 of this Eastern Conference Playoffs series.

Re: Suday Service Plays

LT Profits

Cleveland Cavaliers +4.0

The Cleveland Cavaliers took their game off in Game 3 after dominating the Washington Wizards the first two games, but it should be back to business as usual today as the Cavaliers take control of this series.

In fact, that 108-72 loss in Game 3 was the worst loss in Cleveland playoff history, so the Cavs will no doubt be anxious to erase that effort (or lack of) from their memories as soon as possible. The Cavaliers were awful on the road the first half of this season, but improved greatly while going 11-11 straight up and a winning 12-10 against the spread in all their road games since January 15, so we see no reason they can’t go back to their “A” game here with the threat of letting the Wizards back in this series hanging over their heads.

LeBron James was held to “only” 22 points in Game 3 after taking over the first two games, mainly because the Wizards were able to double team him all game, as Cleveland simply could not hit an outside shot. The Cavs hit just two three-point shots on 16 attempts, and one has to believe that they will improve on that pathetic showing today. That would force the Washington defense to play more honest and come play the perimeter, which would open things up for James to drive to the basket as he did so effectively the first two contests.

Besides, allowing 72 points was certainly an aberration for a Wizards defense that is allowing 99.0 points per game this season while allowing opponents to convert on 46.1 percent of their shots. To put things in perspective, Washington had allowed 101.7 points per game in their previous seven contests, never allowing fewer than 93 points in any of those games.

We look for a return to normalcy here, which should result in a commanding 3-1 series lead for Cleveland when all is said and done.

Pick: Cavaliers +4

Re: Suday Service Plays

Larry Ness

Oakland Athletics @ Seattle Mariners
PICK: Seattle Mariners

REASON FOR PICK: Felix Hernandez made 12 appearances in his rookie season of 2005 and while he went just 4-4, it was obvious this guy had the makings of a "big time" pitcher. He posted a 2.67 ERA in those 12 games but even more impressively, allowed just 61 hits in 84.1 innings with a 77-23 strikeout-to-walk ratio. However, Hernandez was merely average in 2006, going 12-14 with a 4.52. He was not average last year though, going 14-7 with a 3.92 ERA, as the Mariners went 21-9 in his starts (plus-$1,020), making him MLB's fourth-best starter vs the moneyline. Hernandez has been even better in 2008. The bullpen cost him wins in his first two starts as he allowed just one ER in 15 innings but was left with back-to-back no decisions. However, the team has won his last three outings, giving him a 2-0 mark this year (team is no 3-2), with a 1.67 ERA (four of the eight ERs he allowed came in an 8-5 win over the Angels). As for Oakland's Joe Blanton, he's made 98 starts this past three season for the A's, going 42-32 with a 4.09 ERA (team is 53-45). He's already made six starts for them in 2008 (he pitched in Japan vs the Red Sox on Mar 25) and while his first three were OK, he's allowed 29 hits and 13 ERs over 23.1 innings in his last three, for a 5.01 ERA. He hasn't gotten much support either and he's 1-4, with the team going 1-5 (minus-$417). Through his first three seasons, his road ERA is more than a run higher than his home ERA (4.71-to-3.48) so that doesn't bode well here vs a Seattle team which was MLB's second-biggest "money-maker" in '07 (plus-$1,924), with most of those profits coming at home (49-32 and plus-$1,355). Hernandez is 6-2 with a 2.10 ERA in nine career starts against Oakland (Mariners are 6-3), after beating the A's 4-2 in Oakland on April 16. He gave up just two runs and eight hits (8 Ks and one walk) in pitching his fourth career CG, improving to 5-0 with a 1.22 ERA in his last five starts against Oakland. Blanton was his opponent in that game and while he's had good success vs Seattle in his career (7-4 with a 3.20 ERA in 13 lifetime starts), he did allow 12 hits in that game, matching his career high. Take the Mariners and Hernandez.

Re: Suday Service Plays

Nick Parsons Sunday NHL Pick!

Member Pick: Play ON New York Rangers $ line (+) @ Pittsburgh

We came up short with this very same pick in Game 1 on Friday. However, we feel many of the same principles are in place and, unlike Game 1, the Rangers wont blow a big lead like they did on Friday. Much of what follows is an excerpt from Fridays write-up but, as noted above, its because a number of the same principles are in place: The Penguins rolled right past the Senators in the opening round of the playoffs as they won it in a convincing four games to none sweep. However, sometimes the lack of a true challenge can be a teams worst enemy and the Penguins are indeed set up perfectly for an upset here in Game Two after they made a huge comeback in Fridays game. The Pens finally got challenged and they did respond but the fact the Rangers built such a big lead against them in their own arena has to be a bit concerning. The Pens are playing a team that has a huge edge on them in terms of veteran players and playoff experience. The fact that the Penguins dominated the Senators in round one is not insignificant but, at the same time, the Sens were dealing with some injury issues and also were not in a proper mindset mentally. They were ripe for the sweep once they got down early in the series. While the Penguins faced a beaten down foe, the Rangers did battle with a team (and a goalie) with much proven playoff success as New York battled hard with the Devils and goalie Martin Brodeur. The fact that they took that series and had a lot of offensive success absolutely suggests that they will challenge Pittsburgh in this match-up. Henrik Lundqvist had been sharp between the pipes for the Rangers before Fridays loss and he should certainly bounce back here in Game Two. Just like Game One, there is significant line value with the Rangers here and that is certainly worth grabbing here again in Game Two. Play ON the New York Rangers!
