Saturday Service Plays

Re: Saturday Service Plays

Lenny Del Genio

Toronto Blue Jays at Kansas City Royals

Play on Toronto at 7:10 ET. Look for the Blue Jays to get back in the win column tonight. Starter Shaun Marcum has been outstanding overall this year and in his career vs. the Royals, who he's beaten twice and has a 0.71 ERA to show for it. Royals starter Luk Hochevar was dreadful in his lone outing of the season, getting roughed up for six runs and nine hits in less than five innings of work. Tremendous value on the road favorite here. Good luck - Lenny Del Genio

Re: Saturday Service Plays

David Malinsky

Astros (HT) @ St. Louis Cardinals (HT)
PICK: Under

This one should not really come as any surprise - we have been trying to get behind Adam Wainwright in some fashion in each of his starts this season, and also indicated on Monday our feelings about Roy Oswalt being back on track (unfortunately, Justin Germano did not bring us anything at all in that one). So with neither pitcher being priced for just where he is right now, let’s get in play.

We have told the Wainwright story often but let’s repeat it one more time - after having some troubles adjusting to being in a starter’s role LY he has found his game - over his last 20 starts he sports a 2.57 ERA, which is Cy Young award territory, and in 14 of those games he allowed two earned runs or less. He has 22 strikeouts vs. only seven walks so far this season, and has had a positive ground-out to fly-out ratio in every start so far this season. In three starts against the Astros last season he worked to a 1.80 over 20 innings, and we will call for more of the same here.

Meanwhile Oswalt got off to one of the worst starts of his career, and as such the pitching forms are forced to show a 2-3/6.00 that helps to get us such a favorable price. But all we need to focus on are his last two starts, a pair of sharp outings in which we saw the kind of velocity and command that we are accustomed to seeing from him. He controlled the Cardinals to a dominating 0.60 over 30 innings LY, and should continue to make up for lost time in this one.

By putting all of our eggs in the First Half basket, we are not only taking advantage of the two starting pitchers, but also some hitters that will be a bit weary. Both had to travel to St. Louis after playing on the road on Thursday, and because of last night’s rain delay the final out was not recorded until 12:03 AM local time. That almost guarantees no batting practice before this early start, and it could be well into the game before the hitters are able to get quality swings, especially against the kind of pitches they are going to see.

Tom Freese

Minnesota at Texas

Minnesota starter Scott Baker has allowed 3 or less runs in all 4 of his starts this year. The Twins are 3-1 in those starts and dating back to last year they are 4-1 in Baker's last 5 road starts. Texas is 07 after allowing 5 or more runs in their last game and they are 1-8 after scoring 5 or more runs in their last game. The Rangers are 1-8 their last 9 games vs. the NL Central and they are 0-6 on Saturday.

Re: Saturday Service Plays

Chuck Franklin

The Lakers will win this series and it could be a 4-0 sweep!

The Nuggets can try and outscore the Lakers in a shootout, but it won't happen.  Kobe is just too good.  Especially if you keep taunting him.  Denver has lost its composure in each of the first two games and the technical fouls are piling up.  So are Kobe's points.  He had 49 in Game Two while JR Smith was trying to stop him with trash-talk.

Since Denver can't seem to play defense they've got to try something.  But, defense is the only solution and the Nuggets will be on the losing end again today because they lack that key ingredient.

LA is on a 6-1 spread run when getting points on the road and they are 7-2 ATS the last nine games when getting less than five points.  The Nuggets are 1-4 ATS the last five games played and they are a pathetic 3-13 ATS the last 16 first round playoff games.

Re: Saturday Service Plays

Drew Gordon

Sorry Denver-backers, but even your home court can save you from Kobe and company in this one. Forget about the venue, because changing the building doesn't change the fundamental fact that the Nuggets simply are unwilling to play defense, allowing a laughable 115 ppg over their last 5 games!

Even with the slew of defensive adjustments coach Karl made in Game 2 (different lineups, zone defense) it made no difference, because if there's no desire to play defense, then there's no defense, plain and simple. If they play man-to-man, they get destroyed in the individual match ups with Bryant and Gasol. If they play zone, and decide not to dedicate a defender on Kobe... Well, we all saw Game 2's 49-point, 10 assist effort!

Critics will argue that the Nuggets offense is better in Denver, which is true. However, I think we can all agree that Denver isn't going to outrun this Lakers offense. Really all you have to do is pop in the tape of their 111-107 outright win in Denver back on December 5th to see what I mean. That game was before Gasol was even in the picture, yet the Lakers were able to win outright in Denver as 9-point underdogs, thanks to a Denver defense that allowed Derek Fisher and Vlad Radmonovic to score 20 & 21 points respectively! I ask you: What has Denver done to make you think things will be any different tonight?!

Finally, rewind back to 2006 and Kobe remembers well letting their First Round series slip away against Phoenix. Look for Bryant to put on his Superman cape and carry this Lakers team when need. Nuggets can score as much as they want, but the fact of the matter is the Lakers are the far superior team in this match up and it shows. This is playoff basketball and you're not going to win many games playing hard on only one side of the floor, plain and simple.

Take the LA Lakers plus the points over Denver in Game 3 of this Western Conference Playoffs series.

3* LA LAKERS

Two teams going in opposite directions, and two starters coming off ugly efforts, but only one who we can trust to bounce back, and that's the Phillies Kyle Kendrick. True, he got tagged for 5 runs in 5 innings at Coors, but let's not get carried away, as plenty of pitchers have fallen victim to the Rockies offense in the thin-air of Coors Field. Instead, we should focus on his only career start against the Pirates, back on July 29th, when he limited them to just 1 run over 7 innings in one of his stronger starts of last season.

You want to talk about ugly? Well then, let's talk about Matt Morris' last 3 starts, going 0-3 with a ridiculous 10.34 ERA, allowing 18 earned on 27 hits over his last 15 2/3 innings! Look guys, the Phillies offense is crushing righties of late, batting .299 against them over their last 10 games, and Morris will be no different. Critics will argue he has solid career numbers against the Phillies, but of you want to side with the Pirates struggling righty, then be my guest!

Pirates have lost 8 of their last 10 games, due in large part to a slump at the plate, batting .218 as a team over that stretch. Add in the fact the Pirates have been outscored 28-9 in Matt Morris' last 3 starts, and you've got all the making of a Phillies W in this one. When you consider Philadelphia has won 7 of their last 9 meetings with the Bucs AND 5 of their last 6 overall, there's no question we'll take the Phillies to add to Morris' misery in this one.

Take Philadelphia behind Kendrick over Pittsburgh and Morris in this MLB match up.

Re: Saturday Service Plays

John Ryan

Game: Philadelphia Flyers at Montreal Canadiens
Prediction: Philadelphia Flyers

Reason: Ai Simulator 3* graded play on the Philadelphia Flyers ? Think about this. It is very rare that you have a playoff team that has lost 3 of their last 4 games. That is where the Flyer?s recent run stands having only won Game 7 at Washington. They all but had game 1 in Montreal won, but Montreal scored within the last minute of regulation and then in OT to win Game 1. Some basic logic would say that Philadelphia will be severely demoralized after losing game 1 in that fashion, but my research shows otherwise. Supporting this graded play is a system that has gone 24-11 and has made 18.2 units since 2002. Play on road dogs of +100 to +150 against the money line after a road game where both teams score 3 or more goals and is a marginal winning team sporting a winning percentage of 51% to 60% playing a winning team. Montreal in several poor roles for this game noting that they are just 5-11 against the money line (-11.4 Units) in home games after a home game where both teams score 3 or more goals over the last 2 seasons; 4-11 against the money line (-13.7 Units) in home games after scoring 4 goals or more in 3 straight games since 1996.

Re: Saturday Service Plays

Bob Balfe

NBA Basketball
Magic +3 over Raptors
Toronto proved that they had life in Game Three, but I think Orlando will now go inside to Howard a lot more and get easy points against a weak Raptors Defense. Both teams have pure shooters and this game will ultimately go to the team that plays better on offense. The Magic are the better and will play well today to try to close this series out at home. I see great value in the Magic.

Atlanta +8.5 over Boston
The Celtics really have not played excellent in this series. Atlanta has just played horrible. This is a young team that just is not ready for the playoffs. A hard fought game at home will help this teams confidence in the future. This is the biggest public game wagered on today with about 90+% of the public on the Celtics. Boston might win the game, but I expect the Hawks to keep it close. This is a strict percentage play. Betting against the public in spots like this is a must.

Jazz -8.5 over Rockets
It is no secret that the Jazz play great a home. They sported the best home record in the NBA and the chances of them losing at home two games in a row are slim. Houston looked great last game, but the desperation just was not there for Utah. Look for the Jazz guard play to be superb. The Jazz will come out of the games early and to go wire to wire. Take Utah.

Re: Saturday Service Plays

JIMMY SIRODY

Marlins at Brewers
Prediction: Over

Florida has gone 'over' at a consistent clip during the first month of the season over the past two campaigns, turning the trick in 28 of 44 games. The Marlins have also topped the 'total' in nine straight games on the road versus a NL starting pitcher whose ERA is 4.30 to 5.20 over the last two years. Milwaukee has feasted on lefties, going 'over' in 39 of its last 57 tries. The Brewers have averaged 5.8 runs per game against southpaws in 2008 and hit a robust .291. The Fish are averaging 5.8 RPG on the road and batting .295. Look for another Saturday night slugfest at Miller Park.
