Saturday Service Plays

PICK: Oklahoma State
REASON FOR PICK: There are certain teams that are thorns in the side of good teams. Meet 13-12 Oklahoma State, a not-so-rosy bunch of Cowboys this season. A 22-win NIT team last season, OSU will need to scratch and claw in order to receive a similar invite this season. Hence, every big win they can muster from now until season’s end will go a long way in determining their post-season fate. In Kansas they take on a team that is leaking oil of late (0-5-1 ATS in its last six games). They are also a team OSU has fared well against at home, defeating the Jayhawks in 6 of the last 11 games on this court, going 6-3-2 ATS in those affairs. Grab the points. The Cowboys can smell the blood. KEY STAT: Oklahoma State is 4-1 ATS as a home dog when playing with revenge.
We recommend a 1-unit play on Oklahoma State.

Game: Drake Bulldogs vs. Butler Bulldogs
Rating: TWO-Star
Selection: DRAKE BULLDOGS +6
Butler will host this Bracket Buster contest, battle of the Bulldogs. We expect to get a very focused Drake squad after losing a lead late in their game versus Bradley earlier in the week. Drake’s pressure defense can give this Butler team problems, as they will not be intimated by their surroundings, they have posted a record of 9-2 SU and 8-2-1 ATS on the highway this season. The underdog role has also been especially kind to this Drake team with a 4-2 SU and 5-0-1 ATS resume we have no problems backing a solid defensive dog even on the road. Take the visiting Bulldog and the points as Drake upends Butler.

*KENTUCKY over ARKANSAS by 9
Given their somnambulant, slipshod start and the fact that there remains a clearcut statistical gap between Kentucky and the conference’s top six, ’Cats essentially need to win the SEC tournament to make the Dance, and Billy Gillispie needs to focus on the precise coaching course which will lead him from Point A (today) to the neighborhood of the promisedland/Point B. But an explosion here could propel the ’Cats forward, in a big way. Meanwhile,fatally-flawed Hogs are likely in like Flynn. Yes, there’s no justice – but you knew that! KENTUCKY,81-72.

*SAN ANTONIO over NEW ORLEANS by 15
The Spurs must remember their 24-point loss to the Hornets in late January – after all,it’s difficult to forget such losses, especially for a championship squad who had all their players healthy for the game. Now it’s time for them to exact some revenge, and are in great position to do so as they host a New Orleans team that played last night and could be a little overconfident about the first result, which the Spurs no doubt have gone to school on. SAN ANTONIO 96-79

25 Dime –
OHIO
Take Ohio for the home win over George Mason.
Normally I don’t look at how other teams fared against an opponent to get an opinion on a game, but I couldn’t help it in this case.
George Mason’s Will Thomas is a defensive liability in the paint and when the Patriots struggle it’s when they play teams that have strong inside games.
Ohio has just that as their two leading scorers, Leon Williams and Jerome Tillman, are both forwards.
UNC-Wilmington, a team that also boasts two double-digit scoring forwards, has beaten George Mason twice, so that’s why I’m liking Ohio so much here this afternoon.
Ohio is 10-0 on its home court this year, so they know how to get it done in front of the partisan crowd.
Take Ohio for the win.
15 Dime –
MICHIGAN STATE
Take Michigan State as the big home chalk for the win and cover.
Huge payback game for the Spartans as they look to atone for their ugly 43-36 loss at Iowa on January 12.
That game snapped the Spartans 11-game winning streak and was their lowest scoring output since 1952.
Iowa scores only 56 points per game, which is the lowest in the Big 10, and I don’t see them scoring enough to hang within the number this afternoon.
Michigan State is holding opponents to a mere 60 ppg at East Lansing, so Iowa is going to have to work as hard as they possibly can for points today, leaving them without much energy to defend on the other end.
Take the Spartans as the big home chalk as they grab the home win and cover.
10 Dime –
CINCINNATI
Take the points with Cincinnati this afternoon over Georgetown.
At first glance this appears to be a mismatch that heavily favors the Hoyas, but Cincinnati is no pushover and will give the Hoyas everything they got today.
Georgetown may have the lofty ranking, but they haven’t impressed me all that much in they’re not scoring any huge blowout wins. They’re just 1-5 ATS as a chalk in Big East play this year.
Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin vowed revenge against all the teams the Bearcats lost to last year, and so far it’s been paying dividends as they’ve showed steady progress. John Williamson and Deonta Vaughn form a nice inside-out scoring tandem for the Bearcats, which will keep Georgetown from doubling up on either one of them.
The Bearcats are 6-2-1 ATS in their last nine road games.
Take the points with Cincinnati as they stay within the number at Georgetown.

TEMPLE (-9) over Fordham
Fordham covered at St. Louis on Wednesday but the Rams are still just 17-36-2 ATS as an underdog of more than 2 points away from home under coach Dereck Whittenburg. Fordham is good in that role off consecutive losses (9-4-2 ATS), but the Rams are only 8-32 ATS as a road or neutral dog of more than 2 points when not off consecutive losses, including 1-5 ATS this season. Temple is 10-3 ATS in conference home games under coach Fran Dunphy, including 5-0 ATS this season. My ratings favor Temple by 9 points and I’ll lean with the Owls at -9 or less based on the teams trends.
